Kingsville Kings 2017 Entry Draft in The Greater Metro Junior ‘A’ Hockey League

Preparing for their third season, after coming off a 29-8-0-5 season, the locals picked up several talented players, which, along with returning veterans, could make the Kings a strong contender for the Russell Cup.

“We are very pleased with the selections we made. It looks like several of these prospects could challenge for spots on this year’s team,” said Kings’ president Tom Schinkelshoek.

Among the Kings picks are 5’10”, 165-pound Markuz Mezsargs. The Lativa-born forward had 45 points including 13 goals in just 41 games with the New York Aviators of the USPHL.

His Aviators’ teammates Dalton Klein (11-26-37) and Ridge Powers (18-13-31) could also step up and be big contributors.

Taking advantage of Associate Coach Gauti Thormodsson’s ability to spot and recruit talent, the Kings selected five Iceland-born players.

The Kings look forward in having several more announcements in the upcoming weeks.

Loaring Classic Honours Great Local Athletes

On August 3, 1936, Johnny Loaring stood on the podium in Berlin, Germany and accepted a silver medal for Canada. It was his 21st birthday, and despite his youth, finished second only by three-tenths of a second behind world record Glenn Hardin in the 400m hurdles at the Olympics.

This past weekend dozens of the top athletes through Canada and the United States took part in the Johnny Loaring Classic, hosted by the University of Windsor Athletics.

It was a chance to see some of the best and future brightest but it was also an opportunity to pay honour to one of Windsor’s greatest athletes.

Loaring was born in Winnipeg and after moving to Windsor fought off rheumatic fever to excel in sports at Kennedy Collegiate Institute before heading to the University of Western Ontario.

His athletic prowess has earned him entry into the Canadian Olympic, Canadian Amateur Athletic, Windsor/Essex County, University of Western Ontario, UWO Track and Field and the Canadian Sports Halls of Fame.

A distinguished member of the navy in WW II, Loaring saved three lives in September 1940 after a ship was torpedoed. He elevated to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander and was in command of the Canadian Radar Training School.

Saturday at the University of Windsor’s track and field complex, Loaring’s son John was pleased to present medals to the elementary school athletes who competed in the relay race. Several members of the Loaring family attended as did famed Lancers’ coach Dennis Fairall.

Several events were held including shot put, triple jump, javelin and track.

Danville Dashers vs St. Clair Shores Fighting Saints

Kingsville was the site of a professional hockey game Thursday night.

The Danville Dashers got by the St. Clair Shores Fighting Saints 7-5 in a regular season Federal Hockey League .

The Kingsville Kings of the Greater Metro Junior ‘A’ Hockey League are affiliated with the Saints and several Kings played in the game including next year’s captain Blake Naida.

Canada’s National Women’s Hockey Exhibition vs Lakeshore Canadiens

The Leamington Kinsmen Recreation Complex was bursting with hockey fans on Sunday afternoon as Canada’s National Women’s Hockey team played an exhibition game against the Lakeshore Junior ‘C’ Canadiens.

While the Canadiens may have been eliminated earlier this year from the playoffs they gave the nation’s best all they could handle.

It was a homecoming for Ruthven’s Meghan Agosta who was besieged all week by young and old fans who wanted to see her and get an autograph.

Agosta attended Cardinal Carter Secondary School, just down the road from the Complex and after graduating from the Windsor Wildcats program went on to star at the collegiate level.

She is a Vancouver police officer and a three-time Olympic gold medalist.
