STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS MAY 13, 2026 – KULAK HAS CLINCHER as Avalanche complete late multi-goal rally to advance

Brett Kulak scored the series clincher in overtime after Colorado rallied from a multi-goal deficit in the final 3:33 of regulation as the Avalanche stunned the Wild and advanced to the Western Conference Final for the first time since winning the Stanley Cup in 2022. The 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs is the second since the best-of-seven format was introduced for all four rounds that two teams have reached the Conference Finals each with one or fewer losses (also CAR: 8-0).

Kulak became the seventh player in NHL history to have his first goal with a franchise (regular season or playoffs) stand as a series clincher. He joined Trent Frederic with the Oilers (Game 6 of 2025 R1), Ryan Reaves with the Golden Knights (Game 5 of 2018 CF), Braydon Coburn with the Lightning (Game 7 of 2015 R1), Marcel Goc with the Sharks (Game 6 of 2004 CSF), Norm MacIver with the Penguins (Game 7 of 1995 CQF) and Ed Hospodar with the Rangers (Game 4 of 1980 PRLM).

Kulak was traded to Colorado by Pittsburgh on Feb. 24 and became the third player in League history to play with stars Nathan MacKinnon, Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid (also Derick Brassard & Caleb Jones). Kulak was the Avalanche’s 16th different player with a goal in the Second Round, which tied the League mark for most by one team in a single series shared by the Bruins (2019 SCF & 1988 CF), Blues (2025 R1) and Kings (1993 DSF).

The Avalanche became the fifth team in NHL history to earn a series-clinching win after facing a multi-goal deficit in the final five minutes of regulation, following the Jets (Game 7 of 2025 R1), Ducks (Game 6 of 2014 R1), Bruins (Game 7 of 2013 CQF) and Canadiens (Game 4 of 1944 SCF). Colorado (56:27) recorded its second-latest multi-goal comeback victory in franchise playoff history behind the Quebec Nordiques in Game 1 of the 1993 Division Semifinals (58:31).

The Avalanche will meet the winner of Anaheim-Vegas in the Western Conference Final. Colorado will seek its first series win against either club after having met just once before in the playoffs (2021 R2 vs. VGK; 2006 CSF vs. ANA).

Schaefer captures Calder Memorial Trophy as NHL’s top rookie this season

Matthew Schaefer’s historic season was capped by a Calder Memorial Trophy win as he became the first defenseman to be the unanimous Rookie of the Year as well as the youngest ever to claim an individual honor for NHL performance. Schaefer was the second unanimous Calder Trophy winner at any position after forward Teemu Selanne (1992-93).

Schaefer joined the NHL on TNT panel to talk about what it meant to win the Calder, his experience bringing it to Cohen Children’s Medical Center following the announcement and his plans of opening the Jennifer Schaefer Child Support Center.

LEAGUE UNVEILs logo FOR 2027 DISCOVER NHL WINTER CLASSIC in salt lake city

Wednesday featured the League unveiling the logo for the 2027 Discover NHL Winter Classic, which is set to be hosted at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City on Dec. 31, 2026. The logo pays homage to “The Beehive State” by drawing inspiration from its geography, including Utah’s famous Wasatch Mountains and Red Rocks Country.

Thursday has Anaheim aiming to avoid elimination, pivotal Game 5 in Buffalo

Thursday’s schedule features the Ducks looking to force their 10th Game 7 in franchise history after the Canadiens and Sabres square off with a 3-2 series lead on the line.

DUCKS’ YOUTH AND VETERANS VIE TO FORCE SECOND GAME 7 OF 2026 POSTSEASON

Cutter Gauthier leads a mix of youth and veterans into the Ducks’ first elimination game with their current core, while Mitch Marner can help the Golden Knights clinch the franchise’s fifth Conference Finals/Stanley Cup Semifinals appearance since joining the NHL in 2017-18 (also 2023, 2021, 2020 & 2018). Vegas can become the fourth club in the League’s modern era (since 1944) with five final-four berths within its first 10 seasons after NY Islanders (7), Edmonton (5) and Philadelphia (5).

Beckett Sennecke can become the first player in NHL history with a five-game playoff goal streak at age 20 or younger and Chris Kreider needs one tally to pass Mark Messier as the League record holder for most when facing elimination. Sennecke would surpass four-game runs by Auston Matthews (2017), Nicklas Backstrom (2008), Jaromir Jagr (1992), Shayne Corson (1987) and Wendel Clark (1986).

Canadiens, Sabres shift back to Buffalo with 3-2 series lead on the line

Nick Suzuki and the Canadiens are set to play a crucial contest against Rasmus Dahlin and the Sabres as their Second Round series shifts from the banks of the St. Lawrence River back to the eastern shores of Lake Erie for Game 5.

Alex Newhook can become Montreal’s second player in the last 30 years with a four-game playoff goal streak after Alex Kovalev (4 GP in 2004) and its second over that span with six tallies in a single series, following Michael Cammalleri (7 in 2010 CSF). Zach Benson can follow up his birthday winner by helping Buffalo move within one victory of its first Eastern Conference Final appearance since 2007.

Jordan Staal and the Hurricanes await the winner of the Second Round series between the Canadiens and Sabres, with Carolina eliminating both teams in 2006 en route to capturing its first and only Stanley Cup. Staal attended the 2006 Final as a 17-year-old top prospect for the NHL Draft before his brother, Eric, became the first in the family to hoist the Cup – something Jordan would do with the 2009 Penguins, but not since.

Golden Knights’ McNabb Suspended One Game for Interference

Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Brayden McNabb has been suspended for one game for interference against Anaheim Ducks forward Ryan Poehling during Game 5 of the teams’ Second Round series in Las Vegas on Tuesday, May 12. The incident occurred at 8:55 of the first period. McNabb was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for interference.

Islanders’ Matthew Schaefer Wins Calder Trophy

Defenseman Matthew Schaefer of the New York Islanders is the 2025-26 recipient of the Calder Memorial Trophy, presented “to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition,” as selected by the Professional Hockey Writers Association.

Schaefer was surprised with the trophy – by his father, Todd, brother, Johnny, as well as Islanders alumnus Matt Martin and his two daughters – during an interview on “GMA3.”

The No. 1 overall selection in the 2025 NHL Draft is the sixth player in Islanders history to capture the Calder Trophy and the first since Mathew Barzal in 2017-18. At 18 years, 223 days on the final day of the regular season, Schaefer is the youngest Calder Trophy winner in NHL history – one day younger than Nathan MacKinnon in 2013-14 (18 years, 224 days w/ COL).

As the first choice on all 198 ballots, Schaefer also is the first unanimous Calder Trophy recipient since Teemu Selanne of the Winnipeg Jets received first-place votes on all 50 ballots cast after his historic 76-goal season in 1992-93.

Schaefer rewrote the League’s record book for production by an 18-year-old defenseman with 23‑36—59 in 82 games. Among his lengthy list of accomplishments, Schaefer became the youngest blueliner in NHL history to register a point in his League debut, the youngest player (at any position) in NHL history to score an overtime goal and the first defenseman in more than 90 years to lead rookies (outright or tied) in goals. His 23 goals matched the single-season NHL record for a rookie blueliner (of any age), while his goal and point totals surpassed Phil Housley (17-40—57 in 1982-83 w/ BUF) for the most by an 18-year-old defenseman. Schaefer, who placed fifth among rookies in plus/minus (+13), achieved these feats while topping New York and all NHL rookies with 2,023:59 of total time on ice – more than 500 minutes ahead of the next-closest rookie in 2025-26.

STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS MAY 12, 2026 – BENSON SENDS SABRES BACK TO BUFFALO WITH EVEN SERIES ON HIS BIRTHDAY

The clubs traded leads in the first period but Zach Benson (1-0—1) celebrated his 21st birthday by breaking a third-period tie and helped the Sabres even their Second Round series at two apiece, with Game 5 set for Thursday in Buffalo (7 p.m. ET). The Sabres have won Game 5 at home when a series is tied 2-2 in each of the past three instances (2007 CSF, 2006 CQF & 2001 CSF) and have closed the series out in six games in the past two.

Benson joined Peter McNab (Game 6 of 1975 SF) as the second player in franchise history to score a playoff goal on his birthday and became the 13th player in NHL history (first in 10 years) to finish with the winner in that scenario. His fourth goal of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs tied Pierre Turgeon (4 in 1988), Dave Andreychuk (4 in 1985) and Alan Haworth (4 in 1981) for the third most in a playoff year by a Sabres player at age 21 or younger, behind only Danny Gare (7 in 1975 & 5 in 1976).

Tage Thompson (1-1—2) and Josh Doan (0-2—2) were also pivotal in Buffalo’s third comeback win of the playoffs. Thompson recorded his third consecutive multi-point playoff road game and tied Gilbert Perreault (3 GP in 1981) for the longest such streak in franchise history while Doan extended his assist streak to five games – the longest by a Sabres player since Daniel Briere (5 GP in 2006) and two shy of Perreault’s franchise record (7 GP in 1981).

DOROFEYEV, EICHEL HELP GOLDEN KNIGHTS REBOUND TO OVERTIME WIN

Pavel Dorofeyev (2-0—2) and Jack Eichel (0-2—2) first combined on a game-tying tally in the first period and their services were needed once again in overtime after the Ducks scored a tying marker of their own within the final four minutes of regulation. The duo not only helped the Golden Knights gain a 3-2 series advantage but propelled the club to a 3-0 mark in overtime during the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs – tied for the most wins in a single postseason in franchise history and tied with the Hurricanes for the most among all clubs this playoffs.

Eichel owns 11 assists on game-tying goals since his postseason debut in 2023 – one back of Connor McDavid (12) for the most among all players during the span. In fact, he needs one more helper to become just the fifth American player in Stanley Cup Playoffs history with 15 or more assists in multiple playoff years (20 in 2023). He would join Matthew Tkachuk, Chris Chelios, Craig Janney and Kevin Stevens (all 2x).

The Golden Knights forward (1-14—15 in 11 GP), with an NHL-leading 14 assists this postseason, is appearing in the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the fourth consecutive year after missing out in each of his first seven campaigns and has since produced 11-47—58 in 51 career outings – 0.92 assists per game.

SECOND ROUND SCORING WAYS

Ducks rookie Beckett Sennecke (1-0—1) and Canadiens forward Alex Newhook (1-0—1) have been regulars on the score sheet during the Second Round of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs and continued their scoring ways as their clubs look to rebound when their series resume on Thursday.

Sennecke achieved a handful of accomplishments on the night he found the back of the net for the fourth straight contest: he established a franchise playoff record for the longest goal streak by a rookie (4-1—5 in 4 GP); his five goals in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs matched the single-postseason franchise rookie record; and his four goals tied the most in a series by a player age 20 or younger in the past 16 years.

Newhook extended his goal streak to three games and boosted his total this postseason to six, five of which have come in this series alone. Newhook became the fourth Canadiens player in the past 30 years to score five goals in a single series, joining Michael Cammalleri (7 in 2010 CSF & 5 in 2010 CQF), Brian Gionta (5 in 2010 CSF) and Alex Kovalev (5 in 2004 CQF).

GUERIN, MacFARLAND AND VERBEEK VOTED FINALISTS FOR GM OF THE YEAR

Bill Guerin (MIN), Chris MacFarland (COL) and Pat Verbeek (ANA) are the three finalists for the 2025-26 Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award. Voting for this award was conducted among the NHL general managers and a panel of League executives and media at the conclusion of the First Round of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

AVALANCHE, WILD READY FOR ALL-IMPORTANT GAME 5 WITH SERIES ON THE LINE

The Second Round series between the Avalanche and Wild shifts back to Ball Arena in Denver for a pivotal Game 5, where the Presidents’ Trophy winners have their sights on the Western Conference Final while Minnesota looks to overcome a 3-1 deficit in a best-of-seven series for the third time in franchise history – and second time against Colorado (2003 CQF).

The Avalanche had their win streak to start the postseason snapped in Game 3 but can join the Hurricanes (8 GP) as the second team to advance to the Conference Finals in nine or fewer games (last: ANA, 9 GP in 2015). The 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs can be the second in NHL history to feature multiple teams achieve the feat after the Flyers (9 GP) and Red Wings (9 GP) each did so during the 1995 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Wild can become the fourth franchise in Stanley Cup Playoffs history to overcome a 3-1 deficit in a best-of-seven series three times and would join the Canadiens (2021 R1, 2010 CQF & 2004 CQF), Rangers (2022 R1, 2015 R2 & 2014 R2) and Canucks (2003 CQF, 1994 CQF & 1992 DSF); NY Rangers (2022 R1 & 2014 R2 vs. PIT) and Pittsburgh (1995 CQF & 1992 DSF vs. WSH) are the only franchises to do so multiple times against the same opponent.

STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS MAY 11, 2026 – DEPTH SCORING HELP AVALANCHE MOVE WITHIN ONE WIN OF CONFERENCE FINALS

Five different goal scorers, including firsts of the postseason from Ross Colton and Parker Kelly, propelled the Avalanche to a 3-1 series lead as Colorado improved to 7-1 with a 5-2 win over the Wild in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs and moved within one win of the Western Conference Final. This marks the third time in franchise history the Avalanche have won seven of their first eight games of a postseason after 2022 and 2001, each of the past two years they hoisted the Stanley Cup.

Through the four games Colorado has played during the 2026 Second Round, the Avalanche have totaled 20 goals from 14 different scorers. That matches the most through four games of a series in Stanley Cup Playoffs history achieved first by Chicago during the 1985 Division Finals.

Kelly scored his first-ever goal in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and it came as the game winner with 8:28 remaining in the third period. This marked the League’s 12th go-ahead goal in the final 10 minutes of regulation in these playoffs, which tied the fourth most at this stage of a postseason (60 GP) in NHL history behind only 2010 (16), 1989 (13) and 1983 (13).

Colton and Kelly became the 15th and 16th different Avalanche players to find the back of the net this postseason. Colorado tied Philadelphia for the most unique scorers so far in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs and have had more in a single playoff year twice in franchise history: 1996 (18) and 2020 (17).

HUGHES’ 10TH HELPER

Quinn Hughes (4-10—14 in 10 GP) recorded his 10th postseason assist with the Wild and became the ninth different defenseman in NHL history to reach the mark in 10 or fewer games with a franchise. The assist was also the 34th of his playoff career, which tied Evan Bouchard for the third most by a defenseman through 40 career playoff games, behind only Brian Leetch and Bobby Orr.

WILLIE O’REE COMMUNITY HERO AWARD FINALISTS ANNOUNCED

The NHL announced the three U.S. and Canadian finalists for the annual Willie O’Ree Community Hero Award, given to an individual who – through the sport of hockey – has positively impacted their community, culture or society. The two Award winners, one in the U.S. and one in Canada, will each receive an increased prize of $30,000 to donate to a charity of their choice. The four remaining finalists will each receive an increased prize of $10,000 to do the same.

SABRES CAN LEVEL SERIES IN MONTREAL, GOLDEN KNIGHTS & DUCKS VIE FOR 3-2 LEAD

Tage Thompson and the Sabres’ sights shift to squaring their Second Round series with the Canadiens in Game 4 before Mitch Marner and the Golden Knights battle the Ducks for a critical 3-2 lead in Game 5.

Thompson (3-6—9 in 9 GP) leads the Sabres in scoring this postseason and will look to level the series 2-2 before shifting back to Buffalo. Thompson, along with Rasmus Dahlin, is coming off a second straight multi-point outing on the road – both players can match Gilbert Perreault (3 GP in 1981) for the longest multi-point road streak in Sabres history. Buffalo can square the series with its fourth road win of these playoffs, which would match the fourth most the franchise has had in a single postseason.

Lane Hutson (2-7—9) also hopes to hit the 10-point mark and help Montreal take a 3-1 series lead in a best-of-seven series for the 30th time in franchise history – the first club in NHL history to reach the mark. Hutson can become the third Canadiens defenseman in the past 30 years to record 10 points in a playoff year, following P.K. Subban (14 in 2014) and Andrei Markov (10 in 2014).

Marner (6-10—16 in 10 GP) paces all players in postseason scoring and co-leads the playoffs in games with at least three points (3 GP; also Nathan MacKinnon & Kirill Kaprizov). Marner can become the eighth player in NHL history with four-plus games with at least three points in his first postseason with a franchise. He would join Mikko Rantanen (5 GP w/ DAL in 2025), Doug Gilmour (5 GP w/ TOR in 1993), Mark Recchi (5 GP w/ PIT in 1991), Wayne Gretzky (5 GP w/ LAK in 1989), Jack Eichel (4 GP w/ VGK in 2023), Evander Kane (4 GP w/ EDM in 2022) and Frank Mahovlich (4 GP w/ MTL in 1971).

The Ducks have shared the offensive load throughout the lineup so far this postseason – four different skaters have 10 points. Alex Killorn and Mikael Granlund (both w/ 4-5—9) could both boost that total to six – a number the franchise has seen just three other times in an entire postseason: 2007 (9), 2015 (8) and 2003 (6).

Avalanche’s Manson Fined for Butt-Ending

Colorado Avalanche defenseman Josh Manson has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for butt-ending Minnesota Wild forward Michael McCarron during Game 4 of the teams’ Second Round series in Minnesota on Monday, May 11. The incident occurred at 7:02 of the first period. Manson was assessed a double-minor penalty for butt-ending. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Bruins’ McAvoy Suspended Six Games for Slashing

Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy has been suspended for six regular-season games, without pay, for slashing Buffalo Sabres forward Zach Benson during Game 6 of the teams’ First Round series in Boston on Friday, May 1. The incident occurred at 18:29 of the third period. McAvoy was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for slashing.

STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS MAY 10, 2026 – Canadiens Rally Past Sabres in Front of Roaring Crowd at Bell Centre

Cole Caufield (1-1—2) as well as Alex Newhook (2-0—2), Juraj Slafkovský and Zachary Bolduc accounted for the Canadiens’ four consecutive goals after Tage Thompson (1-1—2) opened the scoring 53 seconds into the first period as Montreal won 6-2 and took a 2-1 series lead in front of another electric crowd both inside and outside Bell Centre. Caufield snapped a five-game scoring drought with his historic 30th go-ahead goal of the season, triggering one of the several “Olé, Olé, Olé” chants from the 20,962 fans in attendance.

Slafkovský became Montreal’s first player in nearly 70 years to have each of his first four tallies in a postseason stand as power-play goals and second since 1934 (when goals by type were officially tracked) after Dickie Moore (4 in 1958). The only players on record with a longer streak are Brian Propp (8 in 1991), Dino Ciccarelli (6 in 1996), Dmitri Mironov (6 in 1994), Andy Bathgate (6 in 1966), Nazem Kadri (5 in 2020), Logan Couture (5 in 2013), Mike Modano (5 in 2008), Doug Weight (5 in 2003) and Mike Rathje (5 in 1995).

Newhook was credited with an awarded goal late in the third period and became the first Canadiens player with two straight multi-goal performances in the playoffs since Mark Recchi (2 GP from Game 4-5 of 1997 CQF). Newhook, whose mom, Paula, was in attendance on Mother’s Day, can tie the longest streak in franchise history set by Yvon Lambert (3 GP from Game 1-3 of 1980 PRLM) when the Canadiens and Sabres renew acquaintances at Bell Centre tomorrow.

More highlights included Lane Hutson logging two assists to reach 12 through his first 15 career postseason contests; Jakub Dobes delivering 26 saves for his second straight win; Kirk Muller carrying the pre-game torch into the venue; as well as an appearance by 7’9” UC Irvine Anteaters center Olivier Rioux, who hails from the Montreal suburb of Terrebonne. Muller scored the championship-clinching goal for the 1993 Canadiens, who remain the last Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup.

GAUTHIER, SENNECKE HAVE MULTI-POINT GAMES AS DUCKS PULL EVEN

Cutter Gauthier (0-3—3) factored on three of four Anaheim goals while Beckett Sennecke (1-1—2) recorded his first career multi-point game in the postseason as the Ducks knotted their Second Round series against the Golden Knights at two games apiece with a 4-3 win. Anaheim improved to 4-0 all-time at home in Game 4 when facing a 2-1 series deficit, while the club won its sixth straight contest in that scenario (home or road) dating to the 2011 Conference Quarterfinals.

Gauthier became the youngest player in franchise history to post multiple three-point games in the playoffs (also 1-2—3 in Game 2 of 2026 R1). Gauthier joined Troy Terry, Leo Carlsson and Jackson LaCombe as the Ducks’ fourth player with 10-plus points this postseason – the highest total among all teams in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Sennecke joined Bobby Ryan (3 GP in 2009) as the second Ducks rookie to score in three straight playoff games. Additionally, he became the fourth Ducks skater to record a multi-point game in the playoffs before age 21, following Emerson Etem (Game 6 of 2013 CQF), Cam Fowler (Game 2 & 4 of 2011 CQF) and Stanislav Chistov (Game 3 of 2003 CQF).

Kaprizov, WILD CAN PULL EVEN AGAINST PRESIDENTS’ TROPHY WINNERS MONDAY

Kirill Kaprizov and the Wild look to tie their Second Round matchup against Nathan MacKinnon and the Avalanche tonight before the series shifts back to Ball Arena for Game 5 on Wednesday. Minnesota can even a playoff round at 2-2 after dropping each of the first two contests for the third time in franchise history (also 2014 R2 & R1).

Kaprizov ranks second in the NHL with 14 points this postseason and Matt Boldy shares the League lead with seven goals. Quinn Hughes’ 13 points mark the most among NHL defensemen – he can become the second U.S.-born blueliner in League history with 14 or more through 10 games during a playoff year, following Brian Leetch with the 1995 (14) and eventual Stanley Cup-champion 1994 Rangers (17).

FOLIGNO FACE-OFF WRAPPED UP ON MOTHER’S DAY AFTER RAISING MORE THAN $200,000

Marcus and Nick Foligno joined SportsCenter on Mother’s Day to recap the Foligno Face-Off, which raised more than $200,000 to fund a new breast cancer research grant at the Masonic Cancer Center in Minnesota through the V Foundation and Hockey Fights Cancer.

The Foligno Face-Off started as a sibling rivalry when the brothers played for opposing teams but evolved at the 2026 NHL Trade Deadline when Nick was dealt to the Wild by the Blackhawks. Their next goal is to become the second set of siblings over the last 40 years to win a Stanley Cup together.

Sabres’ Malenstyn Fined for Goaltender Interference

Buffalo Sabres forward Beck Malenstyn has been fined $3,515.63, the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for interference against Montreal Canadiens goaltender Jakub Dobes during Game 3 of the teams’ Second Round series in Montreal on Sunday, May 10. The incident occurred at 11:30 of the second period. Malenstyn was assessed a minor penalty for goaltender interference. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Canadiens’ Xhekaj Fined for Roughing

Montreal Canadiens defenseman Arber Xhekaj has been fined $3,385.42, the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for roughing Buffalo Sabres forward Sam Carrick during Game 3 of the teams’ Second Round series in Montreal on Sunday, May 10. The incident occurred at 19:56 of the third period. Xhekaj was assessed a minor penalty for roughing. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
