Skating Excellence to be Showcased in Lakeshore

Figure skaters from across the Province will flock to the Atlas Tube Centre this weekend as Skate Lakeshore hosts its first Provincial Series Competition February 14 – 16, 2025.

“The Skate Ontario Provincial Series is a figure skating competition series that allows athletes to qualify for the Skate Ontario Provincial Championships. We are so excited to have been selected as a first-time host for this event, which is geared at high level competitors of Star 5 plus.” – Danielle Stuebing, Skate Lakeshore Competition Chair

The Municipality of Lakeshore says it is pleased to be the host community for this event. “On behalf of Lakeshore’s communities, we are thrilled to welcome figure skaters from across Ontario as they compete for a spot at the Provincial Championships. Thank you to the hardworking members of Skate Lakeshore who helped to bring this event to our municipality. We hope that all skaters, along with family, friends, coaches, and volunteers who make their participation possible, can enjoy all that our municipality has to offer,” said Lakeshore Mayor Tracey Bailey.

Skate Lakeshore says is thankful to the local community who have helped fulfil the many volunteer opportunities associated with hosting an event of this size. “It takes many hands to put on an event of this caliber,” Breault Stuebing adds. “We are so grateful to the more than 100 volunteers who have signed up to support this event.”

Spectators are welcome to the competition. Admission is $7 per person or $5 with the donation of a non-perishable item for the local Community Support Centre. Skate Lakeshore is a not-for-profit organization that strives to make skating fun for everyone. Skate Lakeshore Winter Gala 2024

Skate Lakeshore will kick off the holidays with an expanded Winter Gala showcase on Saturday, December 21 at 10:30am. Performances will feature exhibitions by three of its Silver Stars Synchronized Skating teams, as well as solo skaters of all ages.

“The Winter Gala is a great opportunity for the skaters to showcase what they have been working on so far this season. For skaters heading into competition season, it’s a perfect opportunity to perform their programs in front of a cheering audience, especially as part of holiday celebrations.” – Jenn Woodrich, Skate Lakeshore head coach.

All are welcome to attend the Skate Lakeshore Winter Gala at the Atlas Tube Centre on Saturday, December 21 at 10:30am in the Rock Rink. Admission is by donation of mitts, socks, hat or other warm items to support the Lakeshore Community Support Centre. Over the coming months, the Skate Lakeshore Silver Stars Synchro teams will perform at a variety of venues, including at intermission of the Lakeshore Canadiens, LaSalle Vipers and Windsor Spitfires games.

Windsor Athlete Breanna Williams Qualifies for Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy

Breanna Williams has qualified for Team Canada for the Special Olympics Winter Games in March 2025 in Turin, Italy and she was the only person in Windsor/Essex to qualify.

Williams, a long-time client of the John McGivney Children’s Centre is 15 years old, and the only person from Windsor Essex to qualify.

After a hiatus since the Special Olympics World Winter Games Austria 2017, the 2025 Games signify the return of winter sport competition on the world stage. Special Olympics Team Canada will compete in five winter sports: short track speed skating, figure skating, cross country skiing, alpine skiing and snowshoe.

The Games will be hosted in two locations: Turin for snow sports and Grenoble for ice sports.

Special Olympics is specifically designed for individuals with intellectual disabilities, and some athlete may have co-exiting disabilities. It is different than the Paralympics, which is specifically designed for individuals with physical disabilities.

Individuals who compete in Special Olympics develop improved physical fitness and motor skills and greater self-confidence. They exhibit courage and enthusiasm and build lasting friendships.

These life skills enhance their ability to live normal productive lives. Special Olympics athletes hold jobs, own homes, go to school and successfully confront life’s challenges.

The John McGivney Children’s Centre (JMCC) has been providing rehabilitation and support services to children and youth living in Windsor and Essex County for over 45 years. As the only publicly funded source of specialized paediatric rehabilitation expertise in the region, JMCC supports more than 3,000 children and youth annually with physical, neurological and developmental needs. In addition to providing physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech/language therapy, JMCC offers social work, therapeutic recreation and resource navigation services to families along with a wide range of on-site specialty clinics. Services are offered in the Centre, virtually, in schools and in the community.

Skate Lakeshore Competes in Oakville

The Skate Lakeshore Silver Stars Synchro team travelled to Oakville this past weekend to compete against synchronized skating teams from across the province, earning a respectable tie for fifth place in their flight.

The skaters range in age from 11 – 17 and have ice time one hour a week to practice their choreography, which includes a number of defined elements upon which they were judged. Head coach Jennifer Woodrich was pleased by the team’s performance.

“What a great experience and day,” she said following completion of their routine. “I am so proud of the skaters and the way they carried themselves both on and off the ice. They represented Skate Lakeshore with pride and heart, and are tremendous ambassadors for the Municipality of Lakeshore!”

It was the team’s first competition and for many of the skaters, the first time performing in front of a panel of judges. The team will perform at the Atlas Tube Centre on Family Day at 11am, along with the Silver Stars’ Red and Silver Teams, comprised of younger skaters honing their skills. On March 3, the Skate Lakeshore Silver Stars Synchro team will perform at the first intermission of the Windsor Spitfires game.
