St. Clair Saints vs Fanshawe Soccer Recap

The St. Clair College men’s varsity soccer team continued their OCAA regular season schedule as they faced the top ranked Fanshawe Falcons from London on Saturday afternoon at the Main Campus Field in their final home game of the season

The St. Clair men got off to a quick start against Fanshawe going up 1-0 in the 11th minute on a nice goal by Martin Nyul (Hungary).  It didn’t take long for Fanshawe to tie the game up after Shane Beaton (Windsor) made a nice save on free kick but a Falcon put the rebound in the back of the net in the 25th minute. The score at half was 1-1 with Fanshawe holding a slight edge in shot attempts 7-6. Beaton made 4 saves in the half compared to 2 for the Falcon keeper.

The Saints got off to a great start in the second half as Dillon Hayes (Amherstburg) scored in the 48th minute. However, this seemed to wake the Falcons up as they put the pressure for most of the second half. Beaton made a couple of huge saves late in the half to keep the Saints ahead. However, Fanshawe finally got one by him in the 85th minute to knot the score at 2-2 after a nice cross. Fanshawe had 12 shot attempts in the second half while the Saints had 5. Beaton made 5 saves in the half compared to 1 for the Fanshawe goalie.

With the draw the Saints record on the season is now 4-2-1 which puts them in 3rd place in the OCAA West Division.  Fanshawe moved their record to 6-0-2 to remain unbeaten on the season. The Falcon men are ranked 2nd in Ontario and 5th in Canada. The St. Clair men are on the road Wednesday night to take on the Lambton Lions in Sarnia.

The women came out on the short end of the match falling 1-0 in a fairly evenly played game. The Saints probably deserved a better fate in this match based on shot attempts and shots on goal however all the counts is the final score.  In a scoreless first half  the Falcons had the edge in shot attempts 10-8 but the Saints had 5 shots on goal compared to 2 for Fanshawe.

Fanshawe took the lead in the 54th minute on a nice goal. St. Clair put the pressure on for the rest of the half but could not get the equalizer past the Falcon keeper. The Saints had 10 shot attempts compared to 4 for Fanshawe.  St. Clair had 6 shots on goal while Fanshawe only had 2. The Saints had 4 corner kicks in the match while the Falcons had none.

With the loss the Saints record fell  to 4-2-1 on the season which is good for 3rd place in the OCAA West Division. Fanshawe remained undefeated on the season improving to 7-0-0 on the year. The Fanshawe women are currently ranked 3rd in Ontario and 10th in Canada. The St. Clair women are on the road on Tuesday night to take on the Lambton Lions in Sarnia.
