Windsor Spitfires’ Carson Woodall Named OHL Humanitarian of the Year

The Ontario Hockey League (OHL) has announced that Windsor Spitfires defenceman Carson Woodall is this year’s recipient of the Dan Snyder Memorial Trophy, presented annually to the OHL Humanitarian of the Year.

Woodall has made charitable contributions to cancer research in excess of $175,000 through his Woody’s Hoodies initiative, a cause near and dear to his heart. The initiative was inspired by Woodall’s two grandmothers, including the late Nana O’Brien and in support of Nana Woodall, who has also battled cancer. His creative fundraising endeavours have included engaging minor hockey tournaments, partnering with teams, schools and local businesses as well as rappelling down one of Windsor’s tallest buildings on two separate occasions.

While hoodies are Woodall’s most sought after line of fundraising apparel, he’s ventured into other creative styles such as pucks, stickers and drink koozies.

“We did a lot in the community for cancer research in honour of my grandma. I’m just hoping that this can bring some awareness to it and we can do more with Woody’s Hoodies in the future. I’m thankful for all of the support I’ve received and have really enjoyed doing this work.” – Carson Woodall

Named the 2025 Youth Philanthropist of the Year by the Windsor-Essex Community Foundation, Woodall’s charitable efforts have benefitted causes such as Play for a Cure, the Windsor Cancer Foundation and Erie Shores Hospice. His iconic “Woody’s Hoodies” can be seen throughout Windsor-Essex as he continues to roll out new customized designs and has sold more than 5,500 items including over 4,800 hoodies. He becomes the first player in Windsor Spitfires history to be named OHL Humanitarian of the Year.

“Carson is a local product who developed through the LaSalle Vipers of the GOHL, growing into a Defenceman of the Year finalist,” said Spitfires General Manager Bill Bowler. “His initiative with Woody’s Hoodies also speaks volumes about his character and the values instilled by his family. He’s not only made an impact on the ice, but in the community as well, and that’s something we’re incredibly proud of.”

A former 10th round pick by the Spitfires in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection, Woodall stepped up his offensive production this past season, finishing with 12 goals, 51 assists and 63 points over 68 games to be named an OHL Defenceman of the Year finalist. The Belle River native was the OHL Defenceman of the Month for October, and finished his fourth OHL season with 21 goals, 109 assists and 130 points over 194 games in a Spitfires uniform. Woodall placed second in OHL Coaches Poll voting as the Western Conference’s most improved player, as well as best offensive defenceman. He recently announced a commitment to Boston College (NCAA).

Each year the OHL awards a player that has demonstrated outstanding qualities as a positive role model in the community with the Dan Snyder Memorial Trophy. The Ontario Hockey League Board of Governors announced in 2004 that the OHL Humanitarian of the Year award would be named in recognition of the former Owen Sound Platers captain, who was twice named his team’s Humanitarian of the Year in recognition of his tremendous efforts in supporting community activities.

Woodall emerged as this year’s award winner from a group of finalists also consisting of David Egorov of the Brantford Bulldogs, Tristen Trevino of the Erie Otters, Thanasi Marentette of the Peterborough Petes and Beckham Edwards of the Sarnia Sting.

Woodall will be formally presented with the Dan Snyder Memorial Trophy at the 2026 OHL Awards Ceremony this June at The Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

St. Clair College Wins Top Award in 2026 NHL Hockey Innovation Competition

Kinetic Floor Tiles, An Arena Smart App and Year-Round Access Opportunities Highlight Competition Pitches

The National Hockey League and National Hockey League Players’ Association have announced that students from three Ontario universities and colleges were named winners of the Hockey Innovation Competition presented by SAP at the event’s third edition, held Wednesday at Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa.

Open to post-secondary students across Ontario, the competition challenged teams to pitch innovative, practical solutions to hockey infrastructure issues — from aging community rinks and limited ice access to outdated facilities and a shortage of multi-use spaces. Participants were encouraged to develop ideas with clear implementation potential for the NHL, its Clubs, and community partners, with the goal of expanding access and supporting long-term growth of the sport in Canada.

The following teams received scholarship grants, a VIP NHL ticket experience, and networking opportunities with the NHL, SAP, Ottawa Senators, and participating academic institutions.

THE CHANGEMAKER AWARD

Presented to the team whose proposal demonstrated the highest level of feasibility and readiness for implementation, with a strong emphasis on real‑world applicability, scalability, and impact.

Every Step Counts

Alexandra Cohen, Tyler Fisher, Emily Miasik, Mackenzie Nyusa, Lila Pringle

Business Communications, Sport and Event Management (University of Guelph)

This pitch uses innovative kinetic floor tiles in NHL arena entrances and Kids Zones to turn fan movement into renewable energy, delivering an interactive, sustainable game-day experience powered by real-time data.

THE INNOVATOR AWARD

Presented to the team whose concept demonstrated the most original, forward‑thinking, and transformative approach, prioritizing creativity and ingenuity over feasibility.

Reignite the Rink

Sausha Goodhand, Elle Hebert, Airika Natyshak and Aryanna Pierson

Advertising and Marketing Communications Management (St. Clair College)

This proposal outlined a scalable retrofit solution that captures and reuses excess rink heat, integrates modular multi‑use spaces, and connects communities through a digital app—reimagining aging arenas as sustainable, year‑round hubs.

First-Line

Jordan Bates

Commerce (Queen’s University)

This smart arena app leverages real-time AI and SAP analytics to optimize seating, concessions, navigation, and in-game engagement — enhancing the fan experience while unlocking new revenue opportunities.

NHL NOVEMBER 16, 2025 – HUGHES HELPS CANUCKS CLAIM MULTI-GOAL COMBACK WIN WITH FOUR-POINT GAME

After the Lightning went up 2-0, Quinn Hughes (0-4—4) sparked a Canucks comeback that saw the team score six straight goals, including three in a span of 1:40 in the final frame, to defeat the Lightning at Benchmark International Arena. It marked Vancouver’s third multi-goal comeback win of the season, which is tied with Anaheim and Edmonton for the second most behind only Dallas (4).

Hughes, named to Team USA for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, recorded his third career four-assist game and tied Reed Larson for the fifth most by an American defenseman behind Gary Suter (8 GP), Chris Chelios (6 GP), Brian Leetch (6 GP) and Phil Housley (4 GP). Hughes (448 GP) also became one of just three defensemen in NHL history to record 25 games with three or more assists prior to his 500th contest, joining Bobby Orr (362 GP) and Paul Coffey (428 GP).

Vancouver scored five goals in the third period of a game for just the fourth time in the past 30 years, following April 8, 2025 (6-5 OT W at DAL), Nov. 3, 2022 (8-5 W vs. ANA) and Oct. 22, 2010 (5-2 W at DET). Three of those five goals came in a span of 1:40, which marked the fastest three goals by one team since the Blackhawks potted that many against the Bruins in 1:33 on April 10, 2025.

Veteran Karlsson, rookie murashov LEAD PENGUINS IN Global SERIES Finale

Erik Karlsson (0-1—1) factored on the first of four unanswered Penguins goals in his first NHL regular-season game in his home country since the 2017 Global Series and 21-year-old rookie Sergei Murashov turned aside all 22 shots he faced – including 12 in the third period – to lift Pittsburgh to victory in the 2025 NHL Global Series Sweden presented by Fastenal finale.

Karlsson (Landsbro, Sweden), who also appeared in the 2022 Global Series Czechia as a member of the Sharks, has collected all five of his career points in regular-season games outside North America in Sweden (0-5—5 in 6 GP). His five career assists in that scenario are tied for the most by one player competing in a regular-season game in his home country, alongside Finland’s Aleksander Barkov (1-5—6 in 4 GP).

Murashov, who joined Jeff Zatkoff (Nov. 2, 2013) as the second goaltender in Penguins history to register a shutout in his first career NHL win, became the third netminder in NHL history with a shutout in a regular-season game outside North America. The others: Tim Thomas (29 saves in 2010 Premiere Series) and Antti Niemi (23 saves in 2009 Premiere Series).

REST OF SUNDAY’S WINNERS
More notes from the rest of Sunday’s winners, including the Red Wings, Wild and Avalanche.

Lucas Raymond (1-1—2) posted a multi-point performance to boost his 2025-26 totals to 5-15—20 (17 GP) and lift the Detroit Red Wings to victory at Madison Square Garden. Raymond became the fastest Red Wings player to 20 points in a season at age 23 or younger since Sergei Fedorov (12 GP) in 1993-94.

Kirill Kaprizov scored on the power play with 10 seconds left in overtime to give Minnesota the victory. Kaprizov recorded the eighth instance in Wild history of a player scoring a goal in the final 10 seconds of overtime and became the only player in franchise history to do so multiple times (4:55 on Dec. 21, 2023).

Cale Makar (0-1—1) assisted on the tying goal to extend his point streak to five games in the comeback victory as Colorado became the first team this season to hit 30 standings points (13-1-5, 31 points). The Avalanche matched their franchise benchmark for fewest games to reach 30 points in a season (also 19 GP in 2000-01).

STAR DEFENSEMEN SET FOR PRIME MONDAY NIGHT HOCKEY SPOTLIGHT

The Canadiens (10-6-2, 22 points) and Blue Jackets (9-7-2, 20 points) highlight a six-game schedule to start the week and take to the ice on Prime Monday Night Hockey (7:30 p.m. ET).

The Canadiens and Blue Jackets were the final two teams left battling for the 16th and final playoff spot last season, with Columbus winning five straight games from April 8 to April 15 to narrow the gap to two points entering each club’s final contest. The Canadiens secured a victory in game No. 82 to clinch the last berth, but Columbus won the next night to stretch its season-ending win streak to six games and finish only two points back of Montreal.

Both clubs had a defenseman steal the spotlight last season. Zach Werenski became the first blueliner in Blue Jackets history to lead the team in scoring – notching 82 points to set a franchise record for a defenseman – en route to becoming the club’s first-ever Norris Trophy finalist. Montreal was sparked by the emergence of Lane Hutson, who tallied 60 assists to match an NHL record for a rookie defenseman before winning the Calder Trophy.

This will be a head-to-head showdown between two of the League’s fastest teams: entering play Sunday, the Canadiens (3rd) and Blue Jackets (6th) both ranked among the top 10 in terms of 20-plus mph speed bursts.

NATIONAL GAMES ON THE RADAR THIS WEEK

Oilers at Capitals on TNT, HBO Max, Sportsnet and TVA Sports (Wednesday): With Edmonton five games into a season-high seven-game road trip, Connor McDavid will face Alex Ovechkin for the 15th time in their careers. McDavid (8-16—24) and Ovechkin (8-7—15) have equal goal totals in 14 head-to-head meetings to date, with the Capitals owning an 8-4-2 advantage (EDM: 6-7-1). Playing in his 11th NHL season, McDavid has 370-742—1,112 (732 GP) plus 14 NHL Awards and 44-106—150 in the Stanley Cup Playoffs (96 GP) – reaching the Final in each of the past two campaigns. Through 11 NHL seasons, Ovechkin had 525-441—966 (839 GP) along with 14 NHL Awards as well as 41-41—82 in the playoffs (84 GP) – but did not reach the Final until season 13, when he secured his first Cup.

Hurricanes at Wild on TNT, HBO Max and truTV (Wednesday): Two players selected 100 picks apart a decade ago in the NHL Draft are now nestled among all-time leaders for their respective franchises – though Sebastian Aho (No. 35) and Kirill Kaprizov (No. 135) have taken different paths to get there. While Aho jumped into the NHL at age 19, Kaprizov played five more seasons in the KHL before joining Minnesota in 2020-21 – when he set franchise rookie records for goals, assists and points and became Minnesota’s first Calder Trophy winner. They both rank among the top four in their franchise’s history for goals and points, with Kaprizov owning the scoring edge on Aho across their six seasons in the League together.

Kings at Sharks on ESPN+ and Hulu (Thursday): After McDavid and the Oilers open a doubleheader in Tampa and the 2025-26 season hits the official Quarter Mark (Game #328 – DAL at VAN), Anze Kopitar and the Kings will visit Macklin Celebrini and the Sharks. Celebrini has 10-17—27 through 19 games this season – a point total outmatched by only two teenagers in NHL history at that stage of a season: Sidney Crosby (10-20—30 in 2006-07) and Wayne Gretzky (9-21—30 in 1980-81) – and is fast approaching 100 career points (35-55—90 in 89 GP) as he vies for a spot on Team Canada. The youngest player to represent the country at an Olympics involving NHL players was Drew Doughty in 2010 (20 years, 70 days in opener).

Maple Leafs at Canadiens on Sportsnet’s Hockey Night in Canada (Saturday): Two players who led their club in goals last season are leading the way again so far in 2025-26. William Nylander has factored on 47% of Toronto’s goals in regulation/overtime when in the lineup this season (26 points on 55 TOR GF) – third in the NHL (min. 10 GP) – while Cole Caufield has scored 22% of Montreal’s goals across their 18 games so far (13 of 60 MTL GF) – second in the NHL.

Oilers at Panthers on Sportsnet’s Hockey Night in Canada (Saturday): The Oilers conclude their seven-game road trip with the first of two Stanley Cup Final rematches in 2025-26 (also March 19 at EDM). The Panthers won both meetings last season (and four straight regular-season showdowns dating to 2023-24) before securing their second straight championship over the Oilers in June.

Robertson, DeBrincat and Hughes Named NHL ‘Three Stars’ of the Week

Dallas Stars left wing Jason Robertson, Detroit Red Wings right wing Alex DeBrincat and Vancouver Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes have been named the NHL’s “Three Stars” for the week ending Nov. 16.

FIRST STAR – JASON ROBERTSON, LW, DALLAS STARS

Robertson, who recorded three points in each of his three contests, led the NHL with six goals and nine points (6-3—9) to propel the Stars (12-4-3, 27 points) to a perfect week as they extended their winning streak to five games dating to Nov. 8. Robertson, who also posted a League-leading 19 shots on goal and shared second place with a +6 rating, opened the week with 1-2—3 (including the primary assist on Roope Hintz’s overtime winner) in a 3-2 comeback victory against the Ottawa Senators Nov. 11. He followed that with 2-1—3 in a 7-0 win versus the Montreal Canadiens Nov. 13 before scoring his sixth career hat trick (as well as his 32nd career game-winning goal) in a 5-1 triumph over the Philadelphia Flyers Nov. 15. The 26-year-old Robertson ranks second on the Stars with 9-14—23 through 19 total appearances this season, also placing among the 2025-26 League leaders in shots on goal (2nd; 82), power-play points (t-5th; 11), power-play assists (t-6th; 7) and points (18th; 23). He is the third player in Dallas team history (since 1993-94) to register three consecutive three-point performances, joining Hintz (Feb. 28 – March 4, 2025: 2-9—11) and Jamie Benn (April 6-11, 2015: 5-5—10). Robertson will look to become the first player in franchise history to notch four straight three-point games – as well as the first player from any team to achieve the feat since Nikita Kucherov from April 3-9, 2024 (1-11—12 in 4 GP w/ TBL) – when the Stars play host to the Islanders tomorrow, Nov. 18 (8 p.m. ET, Victory+, MSGSN2).

SECOND STAR – ALEX DeBRINCAT, RW, DETROIT RED WINGS

DeBrincat finished second in the NHL with five goals in three appearances (5-1—6) to lift the Detroit Red Wings (11-7-1, 23 points) into second place in the Atlantic Division on the strength of a 2-0-1 week. DeBrincat, who also tallied a League-best three power-play goals (one in each contest), posted 2-1—3 (as well as his 33rd career game-winning goal) in a 6-3 victory over the Anaheim Ducks Nov. 13. He then scored twice, his 41st career multi-goal performance, in a 5-4 overtime loss against the Buffalo Sabres Nov. 15 before recording the opening goal in an eventual 2-1 win versus the New York Rangers Nov. 17. The 27-year-old DeBrincat, who sits among the 2025-26 NHL leaders in power-play goals (t-3rd; 6) and shots on goal (4th; 77), places second on Detroit with 9-12—21 through 19 total games this season.

THIRD STAR – QUINN HUGHES, D, VANCOUVER CANUCKS

Hughes compiled a League-high seven assists in two games (0-7—7) as the Canucks (9-9-2, 20 points) went 1-1-1 overall. He assisted on all three Vancouver goals in a 5-3 loss to the Winnipeg Jets Nov. 11. Hughes, who missed a Nov. 14 contest at CAR due to injury, then registered his fourth career four-point performance with four helpers in a 6-2 comeback win over the Tampa Bay Lightning Nov. 16. The 26-year-old Hughes, the 2023-24 James Norris Memorial Trophy winner, ranks fourth among NHL defensemen with 1-16—17 this season (15 GP) despite missing five of the Canucks’ first 20 games.

Red Wings Soar Past Ducks 6-3 to End Three-Game Skid

In an electrifying Thursday night matchup at Little Caesars Arena, the Detroit Red Wings snapped their three-game losing streak with a decisive 6-3 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on November 13, 2025.

Game Flow and Scoring Summary

After a scoreless first period that saw tight checking from both sides, the game erupted in the second period with five combined goals. Moritz Seider opened the scoring 5:57 into the middle frame, threading a power play goal through traffic after Mason McTavish was whistled for his third penalty of the game. The Ducks responded quickly when Cutter Gauthier, playing in his 100th NHL game, struck on a 2-on-1 rush to net his team-leading 12th goal of the season.

Michael Rasmussen restored Detroit’s lead before Chris Kreider equalized again with a beautiful finish off a behind-the-back pass from Brayden LaCombe. Just before the period ended, rookie defenseman Axel Sandin-Pellikka gave the Red Wings a 3-2 lead with only his second career NHL goal.

The Red Wings took firm control in the third period. Alex DeBrincat extended Detroit’s lead just 50 seconds into the final frame, batting home a power play goal from the slot off a Seider shot. Although Mikael Granlund pulled one back for Anaheim, Dylan Larkin responded with a goal on a 2-on-0 breakaway before DeBrincat sealed the win with an empty-netter.

Standout Performances

Alex DeBrincat was the star of the night, recording two goals and an assist. The performance continued his remarkable career success against Anaheim, bringing his totals to an impressive 18 goals and 33 points in just 20 career games against the Ducks.

Moritz Seider excelled on both ends of the ice with a goal and an assist while quarterbacking a resurgent Detroit power play that had been struggling, going just 1-for-20 during the previous five games.

Several Red Wings registered multi-point nights, with Dylan Larkin (1G, 1A), Jonatan Berggren (2A), Patrick Kane (2A), and Lucas Raymond (2A) all making significant contributions to the offensive output.

For Anaheim, Cutter Gauthier continued his impressive rookie campaign with his 12th goal, though Leo Carlsson saw his 11-game point streak come to an end.

Key Moments and Game Changers

The game featured several pivotal moments that swung the momentum in Detroit’s favor:

Special Teams Revival: After struggling mightily on the power play in recent games, Detroit’s success with the man advantage proved critical, with both Seider and DeBrincat converting power play opportunities.

Gibson’s Injury: Ducks starting goaltender John Gibson left the game after two periods with an undisclosed injury, forcing Cam Talbot into relief duty. The goaltending change seemed to disrupt Anaheim’s rhythm at a critical juncture.

Quick Third Period Strike: DeBrincat’s power play goal just 50 seconds into the third period built a two-goal cushion that Anaheim could never overcome.

Sandin-Pellikka’s Breakthrough: The rookie defenseman’s go-ahead goal late in the second period energized the home crowd and gave Detroit momentum heading into the final frame.

Game Context and Atmosphere

A sellout crowd of 19,515 packed Little Caesars Arena, creating an electric atmosphere as the Red Wings looked to bounce back from a disappointing 5-1 loss to Chicago on Sunday. The victory improved Detroit’s home record to an impressive 6-3-0 and bumped their overall record to 10-7-0, keeping them firmly in the Atlantic Division playoff race.

For the Ducks, the loss was their second straight after an impressive seven-game winning streak. Their record now stands at 11-5-1, still good enough for first place in the Pacific Division.

The game marked the second and final meeting between these two teams this season, with each team winning on home ice to split the season series 1-1.

Both teams will be back in action on Saturday night, with the Red Wings hosting Buffalo while Anaheim continues their road trip against Minnesota.
