Detroit Red Wings Review December 13 2022

Game Review – Game 1, L 4-2 vs Toronto, Game 2, SOL 4-5 vs Buffalo, Game 3, L 1-4 Vs Vegas, Game 4, W 4-2 @ Columbus, Game 5, W 4-2 @ Tampa, Game 6, L 1-5 @ Florida, Game 7, OTL 2-3 @ Dallas.

Talking Hockey – The last two weeks, the Detroit Red Wings have proven two things, they cannot stay healthy, and they cannot play consistent hockey against quality opponents. Detroit played well at times against playoff teams but struggled at other times. Detroit’s inability to defend against the breakout was their downfall against Florida, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and Vegas. While Detroit forced Tampa into turnovers and dominated stretches of the games against Dallas and Columbus.

Week Ahead – Detroit plays 3 times this week. Hosting Carolina on Tuesday and Ottawa on Saturday, with a road game against Minnesota in between on Wednesday.

Broken Wings – Robby Fabbri (Knee) returning January, Jakub Vrana (Player Assistance Program), Filip Zadina (Lower Body) Expected to return in January, Matt Luff (Upper Body) expected return January, Olli Maatta (Non-Covid Illness) day-to-day.

Hot Wings – The Defense – The entire Red Wings defense has been active lately and consistently contributing to the offense, as little as there has been the last few weeks.

Frozen Wings – The Top 6 – Detroit’s top players have failed to contribute much offensively over the last stretch of games.

In Play! Player of the Week – Jonatan Berggren – Berggren was the only player to consistently produce for a stretch and, even when not producing, seems to be in the middle of every play on the ice.

Red Wings Review Nov. 21-27, 2022

Game Review – Game 1, W 3-0 vs Nashville, Game 2, SOW 4-3 vs Arizona

Talking Hockey – The win streak persisted through the week. Granted, the Detroit Red Wings played two struggling teams with fledgling hopes of making the playoffs. Husso looked solid against the Nashville Predators, securing his, league leading, third shutout of the season.

Week Ahead – Detroit plays four times this week. The homestand continues with games at home against Toronto (Monday), Buffalo (Wednesday) and Las Vegas (Saturday), before heading out on Sunday to play Columbus for their first game on the road in over two weeks.

Broken Wings – Robby Fabbri (Knee) returning January, Jakub Vrana (Player Assistance Program), Filip Zadina (Lower Body) Expected to return in January, Matt Luff (Upper Body) expected return January, Elmer Soderblom (undisclosed) listed week-to-week, Gustave Lindstrom (lower body) week-to-week.

Hot Wings – Filip Hronek – Hronek enters this week on a four-game goal streak and managed to put up multiple point games in both games this week. Ville Husso- Husso stopped 47 of 50 shots faced this week, closing out a shutout on Wednesday to take the NHL lead for shutouts on the season.

Frozen Wings – The Bottom Six – Michael Rasmussen picked up an empty-net goal on Wednesday, but otherwise the bottom two lines for Detroit have been famine for the last two weeks. While the top lines have been sustained by the defense in scoring, more production is needed from the bottom six to sustain the win streak.

In Play! Player of the Week – Ville Husso – Husso persevered in a goalie battle on Wednesday and then kept Detroit ahead on Friday before. He’s supplanted the 1A/1B situation in goal and pushed Alex Nedeljkovic to a pure backup situation with his play the last few weeks.

Red Wings Review November 14-20 2022

Game Review – Game 1, OTL 2-3 @ Anaheim, Game 2, W 7-4 @ San Jose, Game 3, W 6-1 @ Columbus

Talking Hockey – The Detroit Red Wings shook off the underwhelming week they had last week and played to the caliber they are capable of. The return of Jake Walman and Tyler Bertuzzi certainly helped, although neither player contributed against Anaheim. The real story of this week was the emergence of Filip Hronek. Hronek picked up a goal against San Jose in the first, keeping the game close before Detroit emerged in the second period and took complete control at the halfway point of the third. A similar theme occurred Saturday as the Wings traded chances with Columbus in the first period before coming out in the second and completely dominating the remainder of the game.

Week Ahead – Detroit plays twice this week in what is the start of their first extended home stand of the season. On Wednesday they host Nashville and on Friday they host Arizona.

Broken Wings – Robby Fabbri (Knee) returning January, Jakub Vrana (Player Assistance Program), Filip Zadina (Lower Body) Expected to return in January, Matt Luff (Upper Body) expected return January, Elmer Soderblom (undisclosed) listed day-to-day, Gustave Lindstrom (lower body) no timeline given, probably week to week.

Hot Wings – Filip Hronek – Hronek scored three goals on four points this week, but more than the goals themselves was the fact that they were timely goals in key points of games. David Perron – Perron finally made it out of the doghouse, putting up five points (1G, 4A) this week. Perron was major force against San Jose. Dylan Larkin – Likewise as Perron, Larkin carried the team on Saturday with three (1G, 2A) of his five points (1G, 4A) for the week.

Frozen Wings – Moritz Seider – Seider did put up four points (1G, 3A) this week, with the goal being in San Jose and all three assists in Columbus. Prior to that, Seider had 5 points though 16 games and has struggled to maintain the form that won him the Calder Trophy last season. Michael Rasmussen – Rasmussen started this season strong, but has been mostly quiet, except for some ill-timed penalties, as of late. He did manage two points (1G, 1A) this week but his eight points (2G, 6A) on the season are below what was expected of him.

In Play! Player of the Week – Filip Hronek – Hronek paced the blue line of Detroit this week. His four points came at key moments of games. Going back to the LA game last week, Hronek has six points in his last four games on top of being a +4 in that same span.

Red Wings Review November 7-13 2022

Game Review – Game 1, SOL 2-3 vs Montreal, Game 2, L 8-2 vs Rangers, Game 3, L 4-3 @ Los Angeles.

Talking Hockey – The Detroit Red Wings continue their on-again, off-again, season with a week of weak play. Although, the real story for Detroit is injuries with five regulars on the shelf. Detroit is still struggling against the rush attack, yielding two goals to Montreal but otherwise controlled most of the game before losing in a shootout after forcing OT with a third period goal by Raymond. Against the Rangers, Detroit had a rough first period, followed by mostly controlling the second period before a complete collapse in the third saw New York score four goals in under three minutes, again with Detroit unable to do anything against the Rangers rush offense. Saturday, Detroit again struggled to contain the rush and yielded too many powerplay opportunities to LA.

Week Ahead – Detroit plays three times this week, all on the road. They’ll finish the California trip with games Tuesday against Anaheim and Thursday against San Jose, before finishing the week Saturday in Columbus.

Broken Wings – Robby Fabbri (Knee) returning January, Jake Walman (Shoulder) is expected to return from off-season surgery during the current road trip, Tyler Bertuzzi (Upper Body) will likely return Tuesday, Jakub Vrana (Player Assistance Program), Filip Zadina (Lower Body) Expected to return in January, Matt Luff (Upper Body) suffered facial fractures against Montreal and is expected to miss 10-12 weeks, Elmer Soderblom (undisclosed) injured blocking a shot against Montreal and is listed day-to-day but not expected to return before the weekend.

Hot Wings – Lucas Raymond – Raymond scored goals against Montreal and New York plus added an assist against LA. Joe Veleno – Veleno isn’t putting up a lot of offense, scoring only a goal this week, but his play has significantly improved. Veleno also was among the team leaders in shots and attempted shots against both New York and LA.

Frozen Wings – David Perron – Perron’s play lately has been solid, but it’s not translating to the score sheet. He managed an assist against LA, but otherwise has only 4 points for the entire month. Dylan Larkin – Larkin is still among the team leaders in all offensive categories this season but managed only a goal and an assist this week and has taken costly penalties at key moments.

In Play! Player of the Week – Lucas Raymond – Raymond’s transition from Frozen Wing to Player of the Week in just two weeks is more of a reflection of the play of the rest of the team rather than his. Raymond was the only player on the team not to take a step back this week.

Game Review – Game 1, L 3-8 @ Buffalo. Game 2, W 3-1 vs Washington. Game 3, W 3-0 vs Islanders. Game 4, 2-2 @ Rangers.

Broken Wings – Robby Fabbri (Knee) on schedule for January 2023 return. Tyler Bertuzzi (Upper Body). Jakub Vrana (Player Assistance Program). Oskar Sundqvist (Upper Body) Still week to week. Filip Zadina (Lower Body) Likely broken leg from blocking a shot against Islanders; 6-8 week timeline.

Talking Hockey – The Detroit Red Wings opened this week with their worst effort of the season, resulting in a loss in Buffalo. Detroit needed a bounce back week and did not get any effort from the entire bench on Monday. Then, early penalty trouble resulted in a quick goal by Washington, but instead of falling apart, like we’ve seen for the last few seasons, the Wings came back, won that game with a solid effort, and then blanked the Islanders on Saturday. A slow start Sunday against the Rangers resulted in a two-goal deficit after 20 but Detroit again bounced back again, the game up in the second and playing a matched game with New York through the third.

Week Ahead – Detroit plays three games this week. Detroit hosts Montreal on Tuesday and the Rangers on Thursday, before starting their first West Coast swing of the season in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Hot Wings – Ville Husso – Husso stopped 57 of 58 shots faced this week and has established himself as a leader in almost every goaltending metric in the league. Dominik Kubalik – Continues his hot streak on the top line, putting up four points (2G, 2A) this week. Lucas Raymond – Raymond put up only two points this week (2G) but was a positive factor the later half of the week and worked himself out of the doghouse.

Frozen Wings – Alex Nedeljkovic – Ned has epitomized the bad play of the Wings this season. Not always his fault, but he played a solid game Sunday and needs to build on that. Michael Rasmussen – Ever since the injury to Sundqvist, Rasmussen has been off his game and taking bad penalties that have cost the team in key situations.

In Play! Player of the Week – Dominik Kubalik – Kubalik has been a tear early this season. He’s tied with Larkin for the team lead in Goals, Assists and Points, and has 15 points (6G, 9A) in 12 games.
