Toronto Maple Leafs vs Pittsburgh Penguins Game Review December 23 2025 – Toronto Maple Leafs Snap Three-Game Skid with Dominant 6-3 Win Over Penguins

The Toronto Maple Leafs ended their three-game losing streak in emphatic fashion Tuesday night, defeating the struggling Pittsburgh Penguins 6-3 at Scotiabank Arena. Max Domi played hero with a highlight-reel goal in the third period, while William Nylander broke out of his scoring slump with a four-point performance to help Toronto secure their third win of the season against Pittsburgh.

Game Summary

In front of 18,979 fans, the Maple Leafs improved to 16-15-5 on the season while the Penguins dropped to 15-12-9, having now lost nine of their last ten games.

First Period

The game began with controversy when Pittsburgh appeared to take a 1-0 lead at 7:26, but the goal was disallowed after a successful Toronto challenge for goaltender interference. Justin Brazeau was ruled to have pushed Joseph Woll’s pad before jamming the puck in during a crease scramble.

Toronto opened the scoring at 9:07 when William Nylander intercepted Kevin Hayes’ pass attempt at the defensive blue line and beat Stuart Skinner with a backhand on a breakaway, ending his 11-game goal drought.

The celebration was short-lived as Bryan Rust tied the game just 44 seconds later at 9:51. Sidney Crosby fed Rust in the neutral zone, springing him for a breakaway where he beat Woll with a backhand past the goaltender’s blocker.

Matias Maccelli restored Toronto’s lead at 13:34, scoring when his shot from the left side deflected off Penguins defenseman Parker Wotherspoon in the slot to make it 2-1.

First Period Score: Maple Leafs 2, Penguins 1

Second Period

Steven Lorentz extended Toronto’s lead to 3-1 at 7:38 of the second period. After stealing the puck from Erik Karlsson in the defensive zone, Lorentz went in on a breakaway and jammed in a second rebound past Skinner’s outstretched left pad.

Pittsburgh cut the deficit to 3-2 when Rutger McGroarty scored before the end of the period.

Second Period Score: Maple Leafs 3, Penguins 2

Third Period

Anthony Mantha tied the game at 3-3 early in the third period for Pittsburgh, setting the stage for Domi’s heroics.

With the teams playing 4-on-4, Max Domi broke the tie at 11:35, carrying the puck through the neutral zone, dancing around Brett Kulak at the top of the left face-off circle and firing past Skinner’s blocker. The goal was particularly sweet for Domi, ending a 23-game goalless drought.

Bobby McMann sealed the win with an empty-net goal at 17:57, making it 5-3, before Nylander added his second of the night into an empty net at 18:36 for the 6-3 final.

Third Period Score: Maple Leafs 3, Penguins 1

Game Statistics

Final Score: Toronto Maple Leafs 6, Pittsburgh Penguins 3

Shots on Goal:

Pittsburgh: 32

Toronto: 31

Goaltending:

Joseph Woll (TOR): 29 saves on 32 shots

Stuart Skinner (PIT): 25 saves on 29 shots

Power Play:

Toronto: 0-for-2

Pittsburgh: Not specified in the information

Star Performers

William Nylander ended his scoring drought with two goals and two assists. His four-point night was a welcome sight for the Maple Leafs, who had been outscored 14-4 during their three-game road trip.

Max Domi finished with a goal and an assist, including the game-winner that teammate Nylander described as “nasty, flying, dipsy-doodling.”

Sidney Crosby recorded an assist on Rust’s goal, giving him 1,080 assists in his career to pass Adam Oates for eighth place in NHL history.

Noteworthy

The win was particularly meaningful for Toronto, coming hours after general manager Brad Treliving gave coach Craig Berube a vote of confidence for the second time this season.

Chris Tanev returned to the Maple Leafs lineup after a 23-game absence. He had been stretchered off the ice after a collision on November 1 in Philadelphia.

This was Stuart Skinner’s third start for Pittsburgh since being traded by the Edmonton Oilers on December 15, and he has yet to record a win with his new team.

The Maple Leafs’ power play, which has been the NHL’s worst this season (12-for-90 with four short-handed goals against), went 0-for-2 on the night. This game came just one day after assistant coach Marc Savard was fired, with assistant Derek Lalonde now tasked with fixing the team’s power-play struggles.

Up Next

The Maple Leafs will host the Ottawa Senators on Saturday, while the Penguins travel to Chicago to face the Blackhawks on Sunday.

With the win, Toronto completed a three-game season sweep of Pittsburgh.

Kings Rally to Edge Maple Leafs 4-3 in Overtime Thriller

The Toronto Maple Leafs suffered their fourth consecutive defeat as Quinton Byfield’s overtime heroics lifted the Los Angeles Kings to a dramatic 4-3 victory at Scotiabank Arena on Thursday, November 13, 2025.

Game Flow and Scoring Summary

Playing without captain Auston Matthews, who was sidelined with a lower-body injury sustained earlier in the week against Boston, the Maple Leafs started strong on home ice. Toronto dominated the opening frame, building a 2-0 lead on goals from Bobby McMann and John Tavares.

McMann opened the scoring at 8:06 of the first period with a determined individual effort. After initially turning the puck over to Kings forward Adrian Kempe in the defensive zone, McMann recovered to steal it back and convert a breakaway opportunity. His shot caught a piece of goaltender Darcy Kuemper’s right pad before trickling across the goal line.

Tavares doubled Toronto’s advantage at 16:39 when he redirected a well-placed pass from Oliver Ekman-Larsson at the top of the goal crease.

The Kings began their comeback in the second period when Warren Foegele cut the deficit to 2-1 at 6:51, beating Dennis Hildeby with a low shot to the glove side from the left face-off dot. Kevin Fiala then tied the game at 15:41, pouncing on a rebound from Byfield’s initial shot.

Toronto briefly reclaimed the lead when Tavares notched his second goal of the night at 17:16, taking a feed from William Nylander before deking to his backhand past Kuemper’s outstretched left pad.

The Kings continued to apply pressure in the third period, outshooting Toronto 16-7 in the final frame. Their persistence was rewarded when Alex Laferriere tied the game at 13:10, deflecting Brandt Clarke’s point shot past Hildeby.

Just 35 seconds into overtime, Byfield sealed the victory for Los Angeles with a powerful one-timer from the right face-off dot, converting a precise pass from veteran defenseman Drew Doughty.

Standout Performances

Quinton Byfield was the game’s first star, delivering the decisive goal in overtime while also adding an assist on Fiala’s equalizer. The young forward showed poise under pressure, capitalizing on his opportunity in the extra session.

John Tavares carried the offensive load for Toronto in Matthews’ absence, scoring twice and earning second-star honors. The veteran center’s effort wasn’t enough to snap the Maple Leafs’ losing streak, but he provided much-needed leadership with the team’s captain sidelined.

Drew Doughty was instrumental in orchestrating the Kings’ attack, collecting two assists including the primary helper on Byfield’s overtime winner. The performance gave Doughty his 133rd career multi-point game, moving him past Charlie Simmer for ninth place in Kings history.

William Nylander continued his impressive point streak, notching an assist on Tavares’ second goal to extend his run to 12 games (7 goals, 14 assists). The game marked Nylander’s 700th NHL appearance, a milestone for the skilled winger who has accumulated 270 goals and 367 assists in his career.

Despite the loss, Maple Leafs rookie goaltender Dennis Hildeby impressed with 33 saves in his fourth consecutive start since being recalled on Saturday. “Dennis was our best player no doubt,” Tavares acknowledged after the game. “Just stood tall, was real calm, trusted his game. Obviously with his size, he covers a lot of net. He was tremendous.”

Key Moments and Game Changers

The Kings’ resilience was on full display throughout the contest. Despite falling behind early, they maintained their composure and gradually took control of the game. “Even the first period we were down two but it didn’t feel like that for us,” Byfield explained post-game. “Coming off a good win in Pittsburgh, a comeback win there (on Sunday) and then a great game in Montreal (on Tuesday), just getting that feeling over here, we didn’t feel like we were down. A lot of hope in here and we knew we were going to come back.”

A critical turning point came in the third period when the Kings dominated territorially, outshooting the Maple Leafs by more than a 2:1 margin. Toronto coach Craig Berube noted his team’s passive approach in the final frame: “We’ve got the lead in the third and I thought we sat back a little too much.”

Laferriere’s game-tying goal exemplified the Kings’ connected team play. “Just being connected in the offensive zone is something we’ve been preaching a lot and I think those two goals (the second and third goals) specifically it really showed,” Laferriere said. “We were getting pucks to the net and being able to win those puck battles back and kind of just keep going at them. If one guy is not doing their job out there then we are not going to hem them in like that. It took all five guys and those goals were just unbelievable connected hockey.”

The absence of Matthews undoubtedly impacted Toronto’s performance, particularly in sustaining offensive pressure. The Maple Leafs managed just 15 shots on goal for the entire game, while the Kings generated 37.

Game Context and Atmosphere

A crowd of 18,305 filled Scotiabank Arena for this interconference matchup between two franchises with proud histories. The game had added significance for the Maple Leafs, who were looking to halt their three-game slide and navigate a challenging stretch without their superstar center.

The victory improved Los Angeles to an impressive 8-1-2 on the road this season and extended their road point streak to nine games (7-0-2) dating back to October 13. “I think we are playing pretty good hockey, our goalie is making some timely saves, that’s always important and I just think we’ve found a little bit of our rhythm and now we are in a good place,” Kings coach Jim Hiller said.

For Toronto, the loss dropped their record to 8-8-2 as they continue to search for consistency in the competitive Atlantic Division. The Maple Leafs will look to snap their four-game winless streak (0-3-1) when they travel to Chicago on Saturday night, while the Kings continue their Eastern Conference road trip with a visit to Ottawa.

Elvis Merzlikins’ Strong Performance

Blue Jackets goaltender Elvis Merzlikins was stellar between the pipes, stopping 28 of 29 shots. His performance was particularly impressive considering he appeared to suffer an injury during the morning skate but was able to start and excel in the game.

Another Ontario native, Luca Del Bel Belluz from Woodbridge, scored his first goal of the season, adding to the Blue Jackets’ dominant performance.

Maple Leafs’ Struggles

The Maple Leafs, despite outshooting the Blue Jackets 29-19, struggled to find the back of the net. Auston Matthews scored the lone goal for Toronto, breaking Elvis Merzlikins’ shutout bid in the third period.

Injury Report

Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies left the game late in the second period with an upper-body injury following a significant collision near the benches. He did not return to the game.

Implications

This win improves the Columbus Blue Jackets’ recent record to 7-1-1 in their last nine games, propelling them into the Eastern Conference’s first wild card spot. The Maple Leafs, on the other hand, saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.

This game marked a significant upset and a memorable night for the Columbus Blue Jackets, particularly for their young stars Adam Fantilli and Luca Del Bel Belluz. The Maple Leafs will look to bounce back from this disappointing home loss in their upcoming games.

Belleville Senators Head Coach Dave Bell commented on the team’s performance:

“I don’t think you deserve much when you get that many power plays and go 0-for. I liked our five-on-five game, but obviously there’s a massive concern with our man-advantage unit right now. We were missing traffic and guys in and around the net for those second or third chances.”

Looking Ahead

The Senators and Marlies are set to face off again on Saturday, December 28, at CAA Arena in Belleville. This quick rematch provides an opportunity for the Senators to bounce back and for the Marlies to aim for a repeat performance.

Season Impact

The win improves the Toronto Marlies’ record to 16-5-2-3.

The loss drops the Belleville Senators’ record to 13-8-0-4 for the season and 4-2-0-0 on Boxing Day.

This Boxing Day Classic showcased the intense rivalry between these two Ontario-based teams and set the stage for an exciting rematch in just a few days.
