Detroit Red Wings vs Philedelphia Flyers April 9, 2026 Red Wings Dominate Flyers 6-3 Behind Larkin’s Hat Trick

Captain Dylan Larkin Leads Detroit to Crucial Victory

The Detroit Red Wings kept their playoff hopes alive with an impressive 6-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night at Little Caesars Arena. Captain Dylan Larkin delivered a spectacular performance, recording his third career hat trick while adding an assist in front of 18,197 enthusiastic fans.

Standout Performances Drive Red Wings Success

Larkin’s hat trick showcased his versatility and clutch ability. He scored a power-play goal, a short-handed breakaway marker, and an even-strength tally. Moreover, his four-point night demonstrated why he wears the captain’s “C” for Detroit.

Defenseman Moritz Seider enjoyed a career-best performance with five points, tallying one goal and four assists. His dominant two-way play controlled the game’s tempo from the blue line. Additionally, veteran Patrick Kane contributed significantly with one goal and two assists, proving his value down the stretch.

Alex DeBrincat opened the scoring with a beautiful power-play goal in the first period. His 40th goal of the season made history as the first Red Wing to reach that milestone since Marian Hossa in 2008-09. Luke Glendening added an insurance goal late in the third period against his former team.

Key Moments That Shaped the Outcome

The game’s turning point came early in the second period. Detroit capitalized on a 5-on-3 power play when Seider blasted a slap shot past Flyers goaltender Dan Vladar just 32 seconds into the period. Subsequently, Larkin extended the lead to 3-1 at the 1:50 mark.

Philadelphia attempted a comeback with their own 5-on-3 advantage. However, Larkin extinguished those hopes by scoring a spectacular short-handed breakaway goal at 4:56 of the second period. This momentum-crushing goal forced the Flyers to replace Vladar with Samuel Ersson.

Porter Martone, the Flyers’ promising rookie, scored a power-play goal to make it 4-2. Nevertheless, Detroit’s offensive firepower proved too much for Philadelphia to overcome. Christian Dvorak also found the net for the Flyers, but their three-game winning streak came to an end.

Playoff Race Implications

This crucial victory improved Detroit’s record to 41-29-9, giving them 91 points with three games remaining. The Red Wings currently trail the Ottawa Senators by three points for the second Eastern Conference wildcard position. Unfortunately, Ottawa holds the regulation-wins tiebreaker, making Detroit’s path to the playoffs challenging.

The Flyers, meanwhile, remain at 92 points (40-27-12). They hold a one-point lead over the New York Islanders for third place in the Metropolitan Division.

Looking Ahead

Detroit hosts the New Jersey Devils on Saturday, while Philadelphia travels to Winnipeg. Every remaining game carries playoff implications for both teams. The Red Wings must win out and hope for help from other teams to secure their postseason berth.

Larkin’s heroics have given Detroit fans renewed hope as the regular season reaches its thrilling conclusion.

NHL Announces Team Nominee for 2025-26 King Clancy Memorial Trophy

The nominee with the most votes will be named the winner of the King Clancy Memorial Trophy and receive a $25,000 donation to benefit a charity or charities of his choice.
Detroit Red Wings vs Columbus Blue Jackets April 7, 2026 at Little Caesars Arena

The Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 in a dramatic shootout on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at Little Caesars Arena. The victory ended Columbus’s six-game losing streak while dealing another crushing blow to Detroit’s playoff hopes in front of 17,687 fans.

Werenski Delivers Heroic Performance

Zach Werenski was the star of the night for Columbus. The defenseman recorded a goal and an assist in regulation before scoring the decisive shootout goal. Playing a game-high 33:26, Werenski showcased why he’s one of the league’s elite defensemen.

“Those are the moments you play the game for,” said Werenski, who grew up as a Red Wings fan in suburban Detroit. The shootout winner was his first career shootout goal, making it even more memorable.

Werenski’s performance was historic. He reached 80 points (22 goals, 58 assists) on the season, becoming only the third American defenseman in NHL history with consecutive 80-point seasons. He also set a Blue Jackets single-season record with his 26th multi-point game.

Fantilli’s Late Heroics Force Overtime

The game’s most dramatic moment came with just 17 seconds remaining in regulation. With Columbus trailing 3-2 and their goaltender pulled, Adam Fantilli fired a slap shot off John Gibson’s shoulder to tie the game. The goal came after Sean Monahan won a crucial face-off and Werenski made a perfect pass.

“I know I had a lane, but it was great to see it go in,” Fantilli said after the game.

Faulk Shines Despite Detroit’s Loss

Justin Faulk had an outstanding performance for Detroit, scoring twice in his return from a lower-body injury. His two goals gave the Red Wings leads of 2-1 and 3-2, but neither held up. Faulk recorded a club-high six shots on goal.

Dylan Larkin also contributed a power-play goal and an assist for Detroit. However, the Red Wings couldn’t capitalize on their opportunities in overtime, with Andrew Copp’s breakaway stopped by Blue Jackets goaltender Jet Greaves.

Goaltending Battle

Greaves made 34 saves for Columbus, including seven crucial stops in overtime. He also earned his first career NHL point with an assist on Werenski’s power-play goal. Gibson made 32 saves for Detroit but couldn’t stop Werenski in the shootout’s fifth round.

Playoff Implications Intensify

The loss was devastating for Detroit’s playoff aspirations. The Red Wings now sit three points behind the Ottawa Senators for the Eastern Conference’s second wild-card spot with just four games remaining. Detroit has lost seven of its last nine games, including five straight at home.

“That point might keep us alive,” said Red Wings coach Todd McLellan. “We are in must-win territory here, but we are still in it.”

For Columbus, the victory kept them in the playoff hunt. The Blue Jackets remain two points behind both Philadelphia and Ottawa with four games to play.

Looking Ahead

Both teams face crucial matchups in their next games. Columbus visits Buffalo on Thursday, while Detroit hosts Philadelphia in what could be an elimination game. Every point matters as the regular season winds down, and Tuesday’s thriller showed just how tight the playoff race has become.

Wild Escape Detroit with Thrilling 5-4 Victory After Red Wings’ Furious Comeback

Kaprizov’s Hat Trick Seals Dramatic Win at Little Caesars Arena

The Minnesota Wild survived a heart-stopping third-period collapse to defeat the Detroit Red Wings 5-4 on Sunday, April 5, 2026, at Little Caesars Arena. Kirill Kaprizov’s power-play goal with just 1:51 remaining completed his hat trick and rescued two crucial points for Minnesota after Detroit mounted an incredible comeback.

First Period Sets the Stage

The game started with promise for the home crowd. Defenseman Albert Johansson gave Detroit an early 1-0 lead at 1:40 of the first period, skating to the top of the left faceoff circle and beating Filip Gustavsson with a shot off the right post. However, the momentum would soon shift dramatically.

Wild Dominate Second Period

Minnesota exploded for four goals in the second period, turning the game on its head. Matt Boldy, celebrating his 25th birthday, tied the game just 18 seconds into the period with his 41st goal of the season. The wrist shot from the right circle found its way between Cam Talbot’s pads.

Kaprizov gave Minnesota the lead barely a minute later, redirecting Ryan Hartman’s shot at 1:25. Vladimir Tarasenko extended the advantage to 3-1 at 7:03, capitalizing just six seconds after a penalty expired. Kaprizov added his second goal at 12:32, breaking down the left wing and firing over Talbot’s blocker to make it 4-1.

Detroit’s Remarkable Third-Period Rally

The Red Wings refused to surrender. Rookie defenseman Axel Sandin-Pellikka ignited the comeback at 7:18 with a long wrist shot through traffic, cutting the deficit to 4-2. J.T. Compher made it 4-3 at 11:14, finishing a beautiful backdoor play from Simon Edvinsson’s cross-slot pass.

Patrick Kane completed the comeback at 14:36, flipping Alex DeBrincat’s pass over Gustavsson’s glove to tie the game 4-4. Little Caesars Arena erupted as Detroit outshot Minnesota 14-7 in the final frame.

Game-Deciding Moment

Unfortunately for Detroit, Kane took a tripping penalty at 16:23, giving Minnesota a crucial power play. Kaprizov made the Red Wings pay, unleashing a bar-down slap shot from the right faceoff dot to restore Minnesota’s lead. The goal was Kaprizov’s third of the night and proved to be the game-winner.

“The boys made some nice plays there,” Kaprizov said afterward. “It really felt good to get it in there, especially that late in the game.”

Playoff Implications

The loss stings even more for Detroit given their playoff position. The Red Wings (40-29-8) now sit two points behind the Ottawa Senators for the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. With only five games remaining, Detroit has lost four of their last five games, including back-to-back defeats against the Rangers and Wild.

“We’re not six feet under yet,” said center Andrew Copp, maintaining optimism despite the difficult stretch.

Tippett’s Hat Trick Powers Flyers Past Red Wings in Crucial Playoff Battle

The Philadelphia Flyers kept their playoff hopes alive Saturday night with a hard-fought 5-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena. Owen Tippett’s hat trick proved to be the difference in a game that had significant implications for both teams’ postseason aspirations.

Tippett Dominates in Statement Performance

Owen Tippett delivered a masterclass performance on national television, scoring three goals to lead the Flyers to victory. The right winger wasted no time making his presence felt, opening the scoring just 4:07 into the first period. After Moritz Seider turned the puck over at center ice, Trevor Zegras fed Tippett for a breakaway, and he buried it five-hole on Red Wings goaltender John Gibson.

Tippett’s second goal came at 12:28 of the second period when he took a pass from Denver Barkey in the high slot and squeezed a low wrist shot through Gibson’s pads and over the line. He completed his third career hat trick with a power-play goal at 7:19 of the third period, skating down the right side and firing a snap shot bar down over Gibson’s glove to make it 4-0.

The hat trick gives Tippett seven goals in his last nine games and brings his season total to 27 goals. Along with his three goals, Tippett also recorded an assist, matching his career high of four points in a game for the fourth time in his career. “Honestly, it’s a feel thing,” Tippett said. “When you are feeling good, you are playing with a lot of confidence. I think everyone in here would say that getting one early makes the rest of the night easier.”

Key Moments That Shaped the Game

The Flyers’ power play proved crucial in building their commanding lead. Noah Cates scored on the man advantage at 16:08 of the second period, shoving a loose puck over the goal line with Dylan Larkin in the penalty box. Travis Konecny’s shot from the left circle was tipped by Matvei Michkov, and Cates was able to push the rebound across the line for his career-high 17th goal of the season.

A pivotal moment came when Seider appeared to score for Detroit at 18:36 of the second period, but the Flyers successfully challenged that Alex DeBrincat had been offside, keeping the Red Wings off the scoreboard. The Flyers also had a goal called back for offside just 42 seconds into the third period, but it didn’t slow their momentum.

Red Wings’ Late Rally Falls Short

Trailing 4-0 with just over six minutes remaining, the Red Wings finally showed signs of life. Mason Appleton, Alex DeBrincat, and Lucas Raymond scored three goals in a span of just 2:31, making it a 4-3 game with 3:46 left to play and sending the 19,515 fans at Little Caesars Arena into a frenzy.

Appleton triggered the surge with a snap shot from the left dot that beat Dan Vladar under the glove at 13:43. DeBrincat followed with a wrist shot over Vladar’s stick at 15:10, and Raymond completed the rally at 16:14 with a snap shot after receiving a pass from Seider.

However, Sean Couturier ended any hopes of a complete comeback by scoring an empty-net goal at 17:56, restoring Philadelphia’s two-goal advantage and sealing the victory. “I don’t want to knock the Philadelphia Flyers, because they just drilled us, but they were done too when it was 4-0,” Red Wings coach Todd McLellan said. “If the game was 3-1, none of that would have ever happened.”

Goaltending and Defensive Performances

Dan Vladar earned the win for Philadelphia, making 31 saves in a solid performance despite the late scare. He made several key stops throughout the first 50 minutes to preserve the Flyers’ shutout before Detroit’s furious rally.

John Gibson made 17 saves for Detroit before being replaced by Cam Talbot at 7:19 of the third period after Tippett’s hat trick goal. Talbot saved all four shots he faced in relief. Moritz Seider and Patrick Kane each recorded two assists for the Red Wings in the losing effort.

Playoff Race Implications

This victory was massive for Philadelphia’s playoff push. The Flyers improved to 36-24-12 (84 points) and are now three points behind the Columbus Blue Jackets (87 points) for the second Eastern Conference wild-card spot, with two fewer games played than Columbus.

For the Red Wings, the loss was a significant setback in their quest to end a lengthy playoff drought. Detroit fell to 39-26-8 (86 points) and remains tied with the Ottawa Senators, who also have 86 points but have played one more game. The Red Wings sit two points ahead of Philadelphia and one point behind Columbus for the final wild-card position.

The Red Wings have now lost three of their last four games, including three straight at home, and are struggling to find consistency at a critical juncture of the season. Red Wings coach Todd McLellan expressed his disappointment, calling it “a disappointing response to getting a big win last night in Buffalo,” where Detroit had defeated the Sabres 5-2.

Looking Ahead

The Flyers, who have won seven of their last nine games and earned points in eight of nine (7-1-1), will look to build on this momentum when they host the Dallas Stars on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Red Wings will try to regroup before visiting the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday night.

These two teams will meet twice more this season, on April 2 at Philadelphia and April 9 back in Detroit, with both games likely to carry significant playoff implications as the regular season winds down.

Saturday’s game demonstrated the intensity and urgency that defines late-season hockey. Flyers coach Rick Tocchet praised his team’s effort, saying “I loved that game for 55 minutes,” while acknowledging there were “some things late that we need to shore up.” For Detroit, DeBrincat summed up the frustration: “You can’t get behind 4-0 and expect to come back. You can’t have games like that at this time of the season.”

Senators Edge Red Wings 3-2 in Crucial Playoff Battle at Little Caesars Arena

The Ottawa Senators delivered a gutsy performance on Tuesday night, defeating the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 at Little Caesars Arena in a game with massive playoff implications. The victory moved Ottawa into the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, leapfrogging Detroit in the standings.

Yakemchuk Shines in NHL Debut

The story of the night belonged to Carter Yakemchuk, who made his NHL debut unforgettable. The 20-year-old defenseman, selected seventh overall in the 2024 NHL Draft, recorded a goal and an assist in his first game. Yakemchuk opened the scoring with a spectacular wrist shot from the blue line at 9:28 of the second period, beating Red Wings goaltender John Gibson cleanly.

“This was a really special night,” Yakemchuk said after the game. “It was awesome to be a part of this win.”

Senators Overcome Adversity

Ottawa entered the game on the second night of a back-to-back, having defeated the New York Rangers 2-1 on Monday. Additionally, injuries to defensemen Thomas Chabot and Lassi Thomson forced the Senators to dress two NHL debutants. Despite these challenges, Ottawa showed remarkable resilience.

Brady Tkachuk gave the Senators a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 17:15 of the first period. Lars Eller extended the advantage to 3-0 early in the second period. Linus Ullmark was outstanding in net, making 32 saves to secure the victory.

Larkin Returns But Red Wings Fall Short

Detroit captain Dylan Larkin returned to the lineup after missing seven games with a lower-body injury. The 29-year-old made an immediate impact, scoring a power-play goal at 4:13 of the third period to cut Ottawa’s lead to 3-2. Dominik Shine also scored for Detroit, but it wasn’t enough.

The Red Wings nearly tied the game late when James van Riemsdyk hit the post with 4:22 remaining while on the power play. However, Ottawa’s defense held firm down the stretch.

Key Moments That Decided the Game

A crucial turning point came in the first period when Alex DeBrincat appeared to give Detroit a 1-0 lead. However, the Senators successfully challenged for offside, and the goal was overturned. Moments later, Tkachuk scored to give Ottawa the lead instead.

The Senators’ ability to score two goals in less than two minutes during the second period proved decisive. This offensive burst deflated the home crowd of 19,515 fans at Little Caesars Arena.

Playoff Race Implications

The loss dropped Detroit to 38-25-8 with 84 points, pushing them outside the playoff picture. Meanwhile, Ottawa improved to 38-24-9 with 85 points, claiming the second wild card position. The Senators have been red-hot lately, posting a 15-3-2 record in their last 20 games.

Detroit now faces an uphill battle with just 11 games remaining in the regular season. The Red Wings have lost five of their past seven games, making every remaining contest critical. They must climb over both Ottawa and the New York Islanders to secure a playoff berth and end their nine-year postseason drought.

Coach Todd McLellan acknowledged the urgency: “We have 11 games left and we have to be better than this.”
