The Lakeshore Canadiens have reached the finals for the first time since 2014 and will face the Essex 73’s, a team who has won the last five division championships

The two most successful teams in the PJHL Stobbs Division will face off once again in the Stobbs Division Championship.

Lakeshore eliminated the Blenheim Blades, coming back from a 2-0 series deficit to win four straight, including a 4-2 victory in Blenheim last night, to take the series 4-games-to-2.

During the regular season, Lakeshore won three of the five matches between the two clubs, with four games being decided by one goal.

Canadiens’ rookie Jake Nimmo had three goals and three assists, while Connor Rosaasen and Kyler Carter each had a two goals and three assists. Goaltender Mitch Topliffe was 2-2 against Essex this year, with a goals against average of 2.77 and a 0.911 save percentage.

2017 Lakeshore Canadiens Playoff Schedule

The road to the Stobbs Division Championship travels through Lakeshore as the 2017 Provincial Junior Hockey League playoffs start this week.

The Canadiens finished the regular season with a division-best 31-8-1 record, finishing 1st overall and will face the 8th seed Petrolia Flyers in the first round.
During the regular season, Lakeshore swept the five game season series from the Flyers, including a 3-0 victory over Petrolia last Friday at the Atlas Tube Centre.
Lakeshore outscored the Flyers 33-9 in those five games, led by forward J.J. Percy who scored five goals and added six assists, while Kyler Carter had three goals and six assists.

In his second move of the day, Canadiens general manager Mark Seguin acquired forward Blake Rutckyj from the Amherstburg Admirals in exchange for Austin Jennings.

Rutckyj, 20, has 14 goals and 23 points in 27 games this season with the Admirals. His 14 goals were tied for first in the Admirals with three other players, but in fewer games played.

He split the 2014-15 season between the Admirals and the Jr. B Leamington Flyers and played parts of two seasons in LaSalle with the Vipers.

The Tecumseh native scored 12 goals in 14 playoff games last season, helping the Admirals reach the Great Lakes Jr. C Hockey League Finals.

“We’re getting a big, strong kid who has been a top level player in this league,” Seguin says. “He’s going to help us in all areas.”

The 6’2”, 195 pound right winger is expected to be in the lineup tonight, wearing jersey number 25, when the Canadiens host the Essex 73’s at 7:05 at the Atlas Tube Centre.

Jennings, 18, was in his rookie season of junior hockey and had split time between forward and defence.

“You can draw plans however you want at the beginning of the year, and sometimes they don’t come together. We’ve made some nice additions at the perfect time,” Seguin says.

“We’ve added some depth that we were lacking and now we have a solid team in all areas.”

The Lakeshore Canadiens would like to welcome to the team 17-year-old forward Michael Ruttinger.

Ruttinger, a LaSalle native had been playing for the Jr. B Vipers, where he posted two goals and five points in 24 games.

“The main thing we’re getting is a young hockey player with an extremely high hockey IQ. He’s going to be able to play all positions, all areas of the rink, and he’ll get the opportunity to play a whole bunch of minutes,” says Canadiens general manager Mark Seguin. “He’s going to work on the things that he needs to do to make him an everyday Jr. B player, and we’ll get him ready for the Vipers for next year.”

The 5’7” centre posted 15 goals and 38 points in 42 games a season ago with the Midget Major AAA Windsor Jr. Spitfires, where he skated with fellow Canadiens forward Jarrett Tazzman.

While some might overlook the diminutive Ruttinger, Seguin is not part of that group.

“It’s not a factor to me,” Seguin says. “He’s extremely smart, he’s got a work ethic that’s second to none, and to me, his heart his 20 feet high. I’m not worried about his size at all.”

Ruttinger, like Tazzman who joined the Canadiens in December, was expected to be with the Canadiens this season but earned a spot on the Vipers with a strong performance in training camp.

The Vipers recent addition of Daniel Beaudoin forced them to part with a player to stay under the roster limit.

The Canadiens helped develop current Vipers forward Liam MacDougall (21 goals and 43 points in 33 games with LaSalle this year), in his rookie junior hockey season one year ago.

Ruttinger will be in the lineup, wearing jersey number 17, when the Canadiens – winners of five of their last six (5-0-1-0) – host the Essex 73’s Friday night at the Atlas Tube Centre.

Game time is 7:05.

The Lakeshore Canadiens will look to Check Out Hunger this holiday season with their annual food drive at Tetreault’s Valu-Mart.

Lakeshore Canadiens will be bagging groceries and collecting donations from 11 am – 1 pm Saturday, Dec. 12 at 345 Notre Dame, Belle River.

The food drive benefits the Lakeshore Community Support Centre, which is located at 499 Notre Dame in Belle River.

The Canadiens host the Mooretown Flags Friday night at the Atlas Tube Centre. Game time is 7:05, and tickets are available at the gate ($8 adult, $5 student/senior, $3 youth, children five and under get in free).

Newcomers Logan Percy and Jarrett Tazzman will be making their 2015-16 home ice debuts.
