Team of 19 Top Canadian Athletes Coming to the Canada Cup of Diving in Windsor

Diving Plongeon Canada will send a delegation of 19 athletes to compete at the Canada Cup of Diving, taking place April 9 – 12 at the Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre.

The Canadian team will be led by Olympic medalists Nathan Zsombor-Murray and Rylan Wiens, two of the most experienced divers on the squad. Several athletes who have recently earned medals on the World Cup circuit will also be in action.

The team also includes a number of promising young divers who will have the opportunity to compete against some of the world’s top international athletes while benefiting from the experience of the Canadian team’s veterans.

The competition will bring together close to 100 athletes from several major diving nations, including China, Great Britain, the United States, and Australia. Many of the participants have competed at the Olympic Games or at various stops on the World Aquatics Diving World Cup circuit.

“The City of Windsor is proud to welcome the 2026 Canada Cup of Diving, building on the momentum of last year’s World Cup,” said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens. “With more than 90 athletes from over 14 countries competing, Windsor will once again be on the global stage. Our Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre continues to attract world-class competition, reinforcing our reputation as a premier sports tourism destination. We built this facility to host events of this calibre, and we are seeing the impact across our local economy and hospitality sector. Events like this showcase elite sport, introduce Windsor to new audiences around the world, and inspire young athletes to work hard to achieve their dreams. We value our continued partnership with Diving Plongeon Canada, and all the partners who work together to create these impactful and unforgettable experiences in Windsor.”

With the World Aquatics Diving World Cup event scheduled in Mexico cancelled, opportunities for international competition are more limited this season. Events such as the Canada Cup therefore play an important role in allowing athletes to gain valuable competitive experience.

Each opportunity to compete is important as athletes continue their development toward the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

“The Canada Cup of Diving is exactly the kind of event that drives real visitation to Windsor Essex” said Gordon Orr, CEO of Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island and CEO of Invest WindsorEssex. “With the increase in athletes competing and countries being showcased and expanded broadcast reach, this event once again puts Windsor on the world stage. We saw incredible demand and a sold-out event last year, and that momentum continues to grow. Beyond the competition, it brings athletes, coaches and fans who stay in our hotels, dine in our restaurants and experience our region, delivering a meaningful impact for our tourism and hospitality sector.”

Diving Plongeon Canada would like to extend its sincere thanks to its valued partners, including the Government of Ontario, the Government of Canada, the City of Windsor, Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island, Dive Ontario, the Windsor Diving Club, and the Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre presented by WFCU Credit Union. Their continued support plays a vital role in making international competitions like the Canada Cup of Diving possible and in helping showcase world-class diving in Windsor.

Diving Plongeon Canada (DPC) was established in 1967 as a not-for-profit organization to promote the growth and awareness of the sport in this country. As a member of FINA, the world’s governing body of aquatic sports, DPC contributes to the development of globally accepted standards of excellence in diving and supports the rules and regulations of international competition. DPC shares a national commitment to advance the art and sport of diving and to position Canada as the number one diving nation of the world.

Windsor’s Own Kylie Masse Finishes 4th at 2025 World Aquatics Championships

Canadian swimming star Kylie Masse narrowly missed the podium in the women’s 100-metre backstroke final at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore on Tuesday, July 29. The 29-year-old from LaSalle, Ontario, finished fourth with a time of 58.42 seconds, just 0.27 seconds behind American Katharine Berkoff, who took bronze with a time of 58.15 seconds.

In a thrilling final that featured the world’s elite backstroke specialists, Australia’s Kaylee McKeown dominated the race, capturing gold with a championship record time of 57.16 seconds. American Regan Smith claimed silver with a time of 57.35 seconds.

The result mirrored Masse’s finish at the Paris Olympics last summer, where the same three swimmers claimed the podium positions while she placed fourth.

Despite falling short of a medal, Masse maintained a positive perspective on her performance: “I really didn’t know what to expect in the 100 just because I hadn’t done much compared to what I was doing for the last quad. I was really surprised to make the team with a 58.18 at trials and was kind of hoping to build off of that coming into here,” said Masse after the race.

“But I really can’t complain and I have to keep things in perspective with that tonight. To be fourth in the world and still be up there, competitive with the top and with those girls who I know are incredible swimmers, it’s something that I’m really proud of.”

Fellow Canadian Taylor Ruck of Kelowna, B.C., finished seventh in the same event with a time of 59.59 seconds.

Masse’s fourth-place finish in Singapore represents a rare occasion where she has missed the podium in a major international event. Her remarkable consistency at the highest level has established her as one of Canada’s greatest swimmers of all time.

Masse’s Olympic journey began at Rio 2016, where she claimed bronze in the 100m backstroke at just 20 years old. This breakthrough performance marked the beginning of an extraordinary international career.

At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (held in 2021), Masse elevated her performance, capturing silver medals in both the 100m and 200m backstroke events, setting a new Canadian record in the latter. She also contributed to Canada’s bronze medal in the 4×100m medley relay.

Most recently, at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Masse made history by becoming the first Canadian swimmer to win an individual medal at three consecutive Olympic Games. Her bronze in the 200m backstroke increased her career Olympic medal count to five, placing her second all-time among Canadian swimmers behind only Penny Oleksiak (7). At 28 years and 197 days old during those Games, she also became the oldest Canadian woman to win a swimming medal at the Olympics.

Masse’s path to international swimming stardom began in Windsor, Ontario. Before becoming an Olympic and world champion, she competed for the University of Toronto, where she established herself as one of the most dominant collegiate swimmers in Canadian history.

At 29 years old, Masse continues to compete at an elite level against a new generation of backstroke specialists. While she has previously hinted at the possibility of retirement after the Paris Olympics, stating, “I think that’s just what comes with being in the sport for eight years on that stage,” her qualification and performance at the 2025 World Championships demonstrates her continued dedication to the sport.

Whether Singapore marks one of her final international competitions or the beginning of a push toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Masse has already secured her legacy as one of Canada’s greatest swimmers and a pioneer in backstroke events on the world stage.

Sandpoint Beach Closed to Swimmers Effective Immediately

Windsor City Council has voted unanimously to close Sandpoint Beach, effective Monday, June 9, 2025, eliminating public access to the water while Council awaits the results of a coroner’s investigation currently underway. The decision has been made to support community safety and wellbeing, and in response to the ninth tragic drowning incident since the beach opened to the public in 1980.

Over the next few weeks, the City of Windsor will facilitate closing off water access at the beach through the following measures:

Scheduling City staff to be at the beach to inform visitors of the closure

Installing additional signage to remind visitors that the waters are dangerous

Installing additional fencing to close off the remainder of the waterfront access

The City anticipates having all measures to close off water access at Sandpoint Beach in place by June 24, 2025. Water access at the beach will remain closed indefinitely.

Sand Area Around Playground and Parkland Will Remain Open

While water access is closed at this time, the sand area around the playground and the parkland will remain open and accessible for families to enjoy the sand, warmth, and outdoor waterfront setting.

“We understand how much Sandpoint Beach means to residents and families, especially during the summer months. However, safety must always be the priority. The Parks and Recreation team is moving quickly and with urgency to put safety measures in place to protect the community. We are already on site, developing signage, arranging for additional fencing, and speaking directly with visitors. We want people to know we’re taking this seriously, and we’re doing everything we can — right now — to prevent further tragedy.” – Michael Chantler, Commissioner, Community Services

City Council also directed City administration to review the Sandpoint Beach Master Plan to determine whether the planned work to relocate the beach, modify the existing shoreline, and upgrade amenities will be able to effectively eliminate the risks posed to swimmers entering waters adjacent to the mouth of the Detroit River, where they may be susceptible to the dangerous currents that exist within the established nearby shipping channel.
