Roberto Duncan Named Head Coach of Lancer Baseball

The University of Windsor Lancers Department of Athletics has announced the hiring of Roberto Duncan as the new head coach of the Lancer baseball program.

“We are thrilled to welcome Roberto to the Lancer family. His extensive experience coaching in a post-secondary environment brings a high level of knowledge and professionalism that will greatly benefit our student-athletes. Additionally, his strong connections within the Windsor-Essex community will help us continue to build meaningful relationships and strengthen the foundation of our program. I’m excited to have him on board and look forward to the impact he will make both on and off the diamond.” – University of Windsor Director of Athletics, Stephanie White

Duncan most recently served as head coach of the St. Clair Saints of the OCAA from 2021-24, in which he led the team to four consecutive OCAA Championships with an 80-10-1 overall record. His time included three regular season pennants with a 62-6 record. In 2023, he was named the 2023 OCAA Coach of the Year. Prior to his time as head coach of the Saints he spent three years as an assistant coach, which included an OCAA Championship and national title in 2017.

“I would like to thank Director of Athletics Stephanie White and the entire athletic department for trusting me to lead the Windsor Lancer baseball program and for welcoming me into the Lancer family,” said Duncan.

“I am excited to meet the coaches, connect with the returning players, begin recruiting, and prepare for the 2026 season and beyond. Coaching in the OUA is a new and exciting challenge, and I look forward to representing the program with pride while giving my very best to our players, their parents, the coaching staff, and the University of Windsor.”

In his own playing career, Duncan was a free agent signing by the Boston Red Sox and played in 151 games across three season (2010-12) in the Dominican Summer League as well as a stint in the Panamanian Professional League. He joined the Saints in 2015 and won two OCAA Championships and a national silver medal. The Panama City, Panama native hit .289 in his collegiate career as a first baseman. Duncan holds an MLB Advanced Certification for Coach Development.

STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS MAY 21, 2026 – CANADIENS COME OUT FLYING FOLLOWING GAME 7 WIN, HAND HURRICANES FIRST LOSS

Cole Caufield (1:00) and Seth Jarvis (0:33) exchanged opening-minute goals before the Canadiens added three more during the first period en route to taking a 1-0 lead in their Eastern Conference Final series and halting the Hurricanes’ eight-game postseason-opening winning streak, which was one shy of tying the NHL record set by the 1985 Oilers (9-0).

Nick Suzuki (0-3—3) assisted on Caufield’s goal and extended his postseason-opening road point streak to a franchise-record nine games while becoming the fifth player in NHL history with a run of that length after Mark Messier (10 GP in 1994 & 9 GP in 1990), Joe Sakic (10 GP in 1996), Leon Draisaitl (9 GP in 2025) and Peter Forsberg (9 GP in 1999). Suzuki reached 14 road points in the 2026 playoffs to set a single-postseason club record and tie Mitch Marner for the League lead.

Caufield collected his fifth career goal during a final-four round after having four as a 20-year-old rookie in the 2021 Stanley Cup Semifinals and assisted on a highlight-reel tally by Juraj Slafkovský (2-1—3) during the final frame. Caufield became the eighth player in NHL history with 40 tying or go-ahead goals in a campaign (regular season & playoffs).

Jakub Dobes (25 saves) remained perfect against Carolina this season and improved to 9-6 in 15 appearances during the 2026 playoffs with a 2.48 goals-against average and .911 save percentage. Dobes became the fourth rookie goaltender in franchise history with nine or more wins during a postseason after Patrick Roy (15-5 in 1986), Ken Dryden (12-8 in 1971) and Steve Penney (9-6 in 1984).

Phillip Danault (1-1—2), Alexandre Texier and Ivan Demidov accounted for the other first-period goals by Montreal, which scored four in the opening frame of a playoff contest for the first time since Game 1 of the 1991 Division Semifinals. The Canadiens achieved the feat during a final-four round for the first time in more than 67 years and fourth time in franchise history (also Game 5 of 1959 SF, Game 1 of 1958 SF & Game 5 of 1954 SF).

LOOKING AHEAD TO THE DRAFT: SAN JOSE HOLDS ANOTHER HIGH PICK

The Sharks won the second drawing of the NHL Draft Lottery, moving up from ninth position to the second overall pick – their third consecutive draft with a top two selection after Macklin Celebrini (No. 1 in 2024) and Michael Misa (No. 2 in 2025). San Jose could become the fifth franchise in NHL history to make a top two overall selection in three straight years following the Penguins (4 from 2003 to 2006), Thrashers (4 from 1999 to 2002), Oilers (3 from 2010 to 2012) and Nordiques (3 from 1989 to 1991).

The 2026 Upper Deck NHL Draft will take place at KeyBank Center in Buffalo from Friday, June 26 (Round 1: 7 p.m. ET) to Saturday, June 27 (Rounds 2-7: 11 a.m. ET).

Landeskog, Avalanche aim to even series against Eichel, Golden Knights

Gabriel Landeskog and the Avalanche aim to even their Western Conference Final series against Jack Eichel and the Golden Knights before it shifts to T-Mobile Arena for Game 3 on Sunday. Landeskog logged a goal in the series opener before Eichel assisted on an empty-netter to quell Colorado’s comeback attempt.

Landeskog underwent multiple knee surgeries after captaining the 2022 Avalanche to the Stanley Cup and made his triumphant return to Colorado’s lineup for the first time in more than 1,000 days during Game 3 of the 2025 First Round. Landeskog was a regular for the Avalanche during their Presidents’ Trophy-winning season and can become the NHL’s second European to captain multiple Cup-winning teams, following Aleksander Barkov (2025 & 2024 FLA).

Eichel, Noah Hanifin, Brock Nelson and Jaccob Slavin are the four players still competing in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs that won a gold medal with Team USA at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026. The only American to win the Stanley Cup and Olympic gold in the same season is Ken Morrow, who completed the feat with the 1980 Islanders after playing for the “Miracle on Ice” team alongside Nelson’s uncle, Dave Christian.

Ontario Extending Last Call During FIFA World Cup 2026

Alcohol sale and service extended to 4 a.m. to support local businesses, hospitality workers and fans during global tournament

The Ontario government is allowing licensed restaurants and bars to extend the sale and service of alcohol across the province until 4 a.m. during FIFA World Cup 2026. The temporary extension will apply from June 11, 2026 to July 19, 2026.

“This summer, fans visiting from around the world will gather in Toronto to celebrate world-class sport. Allowing restaurants and bars to stay open later means that fans can fully experience the energy, excitement and atmosphere of the tournament while supporting jobs, strengthening local businesses and driving economic growth across Ontario.” – Attorney General Doug Downey

This year’s tournament is the first to feature 48 teams playing games across three countries, including Canada. In Ontario, Toronto will host six games at Toronto Stadium. Vancouver will also host games, alongside 14 additional host cities in the United States and Mexico, making this the largest FIFA World Cup 2026 in history.

“Extending last call during the FIFA World Cup 2026 will help Ontario deliver a safe, vibrant and welcoming experience for fans from around the world,” said Stan Cho, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Gaming. “As Ontario welcomes visitors for this global event, this measure will give people more time to enjoy our world-class bars and restaurants while supporting the province’s tourism sector.”

The Ontario government is working in partnership with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario to enable the temporary extension of hours for establishments that are licensed to sell alcohol, such as bars and restaurants, for the duration of the tournament.

Quick Facts

The last call for alcohol service in Ontario is typically 2 a.m.

This temporary extension builds on Ontario’s experience during other major international sporting events, including when the province temporarily extended alcohol service hours to support fans during the recent 2026 Olympic gold medal hockey game between Canada and the United States.

The LCBO is extending store hours in 27 select retail stores across the GTA and Ottawa between June 11, 2026 and July 19, 2026. Extended hours are Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Last summer, the province made an amendment to the Liquor Licence and Control Act, 2019 framework to allow alcohol sale and consumption on pedal pubs.

STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS MAY 18, 2026 – OLE! OLE! OLE! MONTREAL IS MOVING ON!

Alex Newhook scored the 4-3 series winner at 11:22 of overtime to send the Canadiens to the 2026 Eastern Conference Final – the youngest team to advance to the final four in 33 years. Newhook became the second player in NHL history to score multiple Game 7 series-clinching goals in a single postseason.

The Canadiens secured an Eastern Conference Final berth against the Hurricanes, a matchup which will mark the eighth head-to-head playoff series between the clubs and first in exactly 20 years. The series will begin Thursday at 8 p.m. ET.

The 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs became the third in NHL history to feature the first 12 series each require at least one overtime game. The others: 2013 and 2001.

Only four teams remain in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs as the Conference Finals starts in the West on Wednesday when the Avalanche and Golden Knights play Game 1 at 8 p.m. ET.

NEWHOOK SCORES OVERTIME WINNER TO SEND CANADIENS TO CONFERENCE FINALS

Alex Newhook was the Game 7 hero for the second round in a row as he scored the overtime winner to send Montreal to the 2026 Eastern Conference Final, a performance that came after Buffalo erased a 2-0 deficit to force extra time. Newhook became just the second player in NHL history to score multiple Game 7 series-clinching goals in a postseason as the Canadiens advanced to the round before the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 2021. Montreal earned its fourth Conference Finals/Semifinals appearance since 2010 (also 2021, 2014 & 2010) – only two teams have more over that span: the Lightning (7) and Rangers (5).

Newhook became the fourth player in franchise history to score an overtime goal in a Game 7, joining Russ Courtnall (1992 DSF), Claude Lemieux (1986 DF) and Yvon Lambert (1979 SF). He also became the sixth player in Canadiens history to score multiple series-clinching goals in a single postseason, following Max Pacioretty (2014 R1 & R2), Kirk Muller (1993 DF & SCF), Bobby Smith (1986 CF & SCF), Toe Blake (1946 SF & SCF) and Howie Morenz (1930 QF, SCF & 1924 NHLF, SCF).

Newhook finished the Second Round with 6-1—7 after posting consecutive multi-goal outings in Game 2 and 3 as well as finding the back of the net in four of seven contests. His six goals are the second most by a Canadiens skater in a single series over the past 30 years – the only player with more over that span: Michael Cammalleri (7 in 2010 CSF).

Montreal overtook Boston (16) for the most Game 7 wins in Stanley Cup Playoffs history and extended its own benchmark for Game 7 road victories (9-6 in 15 GP).

The Canadiens improved to 6-0 following a loss this postseason, which is the most among all clubs. Only two teams in NHL history have more consecutive wins following a loss in a single playoff year: New Jersey (8-0 in 1988) and Tampa Bay (7-0 in 2021, 2020 & 2004).

The Canadiens set up a 2026 Eastern Conference Final against the Hurricanes and finalized the Stanley Cup Playoffs bracket.

The Canadiens and Hurricanes will meet for the eighth head-to-head playoff series and first since a six-game victory by Carolina in the 2006 Conference Quarterfinals en route to winning the Stanley Cup. The Hurricanes are 2-0 in two postseason rounds against the Canadiens since relocating to Raleigh (also 2002 CSF), but Montreal went 5-0 in five versus the Hartford Whalers (1992 DSF, 1989 DSF, 1988 DSF, 1986 DF & 1980 PRLM).

The Canadiens went 3-0-0 in three games against the Hurricanes during the regular season and were the only Eastern Conference team without a loss of any kind versus Carolina. The Canadiens swept their season series against the Hurricanes/Whalers for the third time in franchise history (also 2014-15 & 2012-13).

STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS MAY 16, 2026 – Sabres survive another intense atmosphere at Bell Centre to force Game 7

Rasmus Dahlin (1-4—5) opened the scoring 32 seconds into the first period and assisted on four of the Sabres’ seven unanswered goals after they fell behind 3-1 as Buffalo withstood another electric atmosphere at Bell Centre to force the second Game 7 of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Sabres would go on to win 8-3. The winner-take-all showdown goes tomorrow night at KeyBank Center (7:30 p.m. ET), which hosted a watch party on Saturday as fans witnessed their team erupt for eight goals while facing elimination for the second time in franchise history (also Game 6 of 1992 DSF).

Dahlin established an NHL record for most points by a defenseman in a contest when facing elimination and became the League’s first player with five or more under that criteria since forward Sean Couturier (3-2—5 in Game 6 of 2018 R1). Dahlin also tied the franchise record for most points in any playoff contest set by forwards Derek Roy (2-3—5 in Game 1 of 2006 CSF) and John Tucker (2-3—5 in Game 4 of 1988 DSF).

Dahlin and Tage Thompson (1-3—4) became the first set of teammates each with four or more points in a contest when facing elimination since Adam Fox (0-4—4) and Mika Zibanejad (2-2—4) in Game 6 of the 2022 First Round. Thompson extended his road multi-point streak to four contests, which marked the longest in franchise playoff history.

The Sabres and Canadiens will play their first head-to-head Game 7 and the 130th unique matchup in Stanley Cup Playoffs history. The 41 postseason contests between the clubs mark the third most by a pair of franchises before their first Game 7 behind Buffalo and Philadelphia (49 GP before Game 7 of 2011 CQF) as well as Montreal and Toronto (46 GP before Game 7 of 1964 SF).

The Sabres will play their eighth all-time Game 7 (1-6 in 7 GP) and third at home (1-1 in 2 GP), with each of the previous two as hosts requiring overtime (Game 7 of 2001 CSF & 1997 of CQF). The Canadiens, who will contest their 26th all-time Game 7 (16-9 in 25 GP) and 15th on the road (8-6 in 14 GP), can overtake the Bruins (16) for the most wins in Stanley Cup Playoffs history and extend their own benchmark for victories as visitors.

Sabres Survive Another Intense Atmosphere at Bell Centre to Force Game 7 vs. Canadiens

Saturday featured the Sabres’ season-saving win, which featured goals on four of the game’s first 10 shots and no more than 17 minutes of playing time between teams finding the back of the net. More highlights include:

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (18 saves) became the sixth goaltender in NHL history to earn a win when facing elimination after entering the contest in a relief effort. He joined Ilya Bryzgalov (Game 7 of 2014 R1), Brian Boucher (Game 6 of 2011 CQF), Don Beaupre (Game 5 of 1985 DF), Grant Fuhr (Game 7 of 1984 DF) and Gary Bromley (Game 3 of 1980 PRLM).

Jack Quinn (2-1—3) scored his first two career playoff goals, with the first standing as the game winner. He became the first Sabres player with multiple tallies in a contest when facing elimination since Randy Burridge (Game 5 of 1997 CSF).

Zach Benson (1-1—2), Jason Zucker (1-1—2), Konsta Helenius and Zach Metsa accounted for the Sabres’ other goals, with Metsa doing so while making his Stanley Cup Playoffs debut.

PLAYER TO WATCH: WESTERN CONFERENCE FINAL – PAVEL DOROFEYEV

Pavel Dorofeyev was a third-round pick by the Golden Knights in the 2019 NHL Draft (79th overall) and has already scored more regular-season goals (92) for Vegas than any homegrown draft selection. In the 2025-26 regular season, Dorofeyev became the first player in Golden Knights history to record consecutive 30-goal campaigns and finished second in the League with 20 power-play goals – a new single-season franchise record.

Dorofeyev (9-2—11 in 12 GP) leads all skaters with nine goals in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs and is the only player with three multi-goal efforts this postseason. He has shown a knack for scoring in big moments: Capping a hat trick with a game-tying goal with 53 seconds remaining in regulation of an eventual 5-4 2OT win over Utah in Game 5 of the First Round, scoring the overtime winner in another multi-goal effort in Game 5 of the Second Round against Anaheim and another two-goal outing in the series-clinching Game 6 against the Ducks.
