ONTARIO JUNIOR “B” LACROSSE LEAGUE CANCELS REDLINES 2021 REGULAR SEASON

The Ontario Junior “B” Lacrosse League (OJBLL) has regretfully announced the cancellation of the 2021 regular season playing schedule. Many players and teams were hopeful for a different outcome, with athletes maintaining their stick skills and standing ready for a return to normal season game play this summer. Unfortunately, this conclusion was inevitable.

The good news is that this decision does not mean that no lacrosse will be played; just that a regular playing season will not be possible for 2021. With the easing of provincial restrictions throughout June and July, individual, small group strength and conditioning training and team practices will give way to scrimmages, games and other condensed events as provincial guidance permits.

At this time, it is still important to maintain a positive and healthy outlook about returning to action in one form or another this summer. The OLA is currently revising their Return to Play guide in conjunction with provincial health authorities, which will guide the league’s plans for events and programming. Initial activities and game play will be possible on outdoor boxes and turf/grass fields, and teams will be permitted to move indoors as soon as Ontario enters Step 3 of its current Reopening Roadmap. From that point forward, the OJBLL will examine the possibility of tournaments or other structured game play formats for players and teams throughout the league.

OJBLL players (aged 17-21) who are registered, rostered or protected to a team which is unable to offer programming in 2021 are permitted to go to the nearest active OLA team that has room and is willing to accommodate them. These players must return to their current team for the 2022 season as this particular movement is not considered a release. Notification to the commissioner by any team who accepts a player who is registered, rostered or protected to another team is required. Throughout the next six weeks, players are encouraged to maintain regular contact with their teams to determine which playing opportunities are occuring within each community.

Lacrosse symbolizes a spiritual ritual to honour, heal and celebrate individuals and their communities. The health and safety of our members and their families are paramount, and we appreciate that everyone continues to do their personal best as we emerge from the pandemic together. We look forward to sharing the initiatives of our Junior “B” teams this summer with the wider lacrosse community, and returning to play when it is safe to do so.

“It is with much regret that the Ontario Jr. B Lacrosse League announces their decision to officially cancel the 2020 season. The health and safety of our members and their families are paramount and we appreciate that our members have been doing their personal best to help prevent this virus from spreading, Thank you for self-isolating, practicing social distancing and working to keep vulnerable people safe.

We had prepared schedules for various start dates, up to July 1st, but with the Government and Ministries of Health extending start-up dates further into the summer this decision was inevitable. Many players and teams were hopeful of a different outcome with players working to keep their stick skills up and trying to be prepared for any type of season to appear. Unfortunately this unavoidable conclusion was apparent to the entire League.

At this time it is still important to maintain a positive and healthy outlook, we cannot accomplish all that we need to do without working together. We will look forward to returning to play this amazing game in 2021, remembering that Lacrosse symbolizes a spiritual ritual to honour, heal, and celebrate individuals and communities, which is why it is referred to as the “Medicine game”.

We now have time to ensure that the next season is the best that we can make it and look toward the Founders Tournament being hosted in mid-August by the Brampton Excelsiors, in honour of the 150th anniversary of Lacrosse in Brampton.

This was a very sad day, but tomorrow is a new beginning.”

We are all in this together. On behalf of the Ontario Junior “B” Lacrosse League, thank you for doing your personal best to help prevent this virus from spreading any further. Thank you for self-isolating with your families, practicing social distancing and praying that things will begin to improve in the near future. Your efforts are making a noticeable difference in keeping vulnerable people safe. To that end, the teams of the Ontario Junior “B” Lacrosse League are preparing for potential modifications to the lacrosse season with two proposals that allow for the season to begin in either at the end of May or early July, depending on the health and safety of residents in Ontario and Quebec.

The Ontario Lacrosse Association has most recently extended its pause of in-person lacrosse activities until May 15th. Only when the Governments and their medical advisors have deemed it safe to move forward, will the OLA advise their membership that it is ok to resume activities. The Canadian Lacrosse Association has subsequently announced a similar May 15th extended date. Decisions regarding National Championships will follow sometime after this. Until such time that these decisions have been reached and communicated, it is our intent to continue to plan for some form of Jr. “B” competition in 2020. All decisions related to starting competition will be communicated through the Ontario Lacrosse Association’s website.

Our players are encouraged to use this period of social isolation to work on stick skills, either individually or with a sibling from the same household. The importance of keeping your stick in your hands will become apparent as soon as we return to play. It is also important to maintain a positive and healthy outlook throughout this situation. While it may seem difficult for us to remain optimistic in the face of the number of changes to our lives in recent weeks, there is always light at the end of every tunnel. Please allow the time, spent with your lacrosse stick each day, to promote health, happiness and strength throughout these difficult times.

Hope springs eternal. Together, we will get through this.

Dave Vernon

The 2019 season has come to an end for the Windsor Clippers. The Clippers fell to the Six Nations Rebels 14-6 on Friday night, giving the Rebels a 3-0 series win. The Rebels will face the winner of the Elora-Hamilton series in the western conference final.

Josh Rosa scored three times to lead the Clippers offence. Singles were scored by Brett Barnes, Zane Dalpe and Blain Wallace. Carson Hebner stood tall in goal for the Clippers, making 60 saves in defeat.

The Clippers 2019 season success exceeded most people’s expectations, after losing seven players to graduation at the end of the 2018 season and four players advanced to the Jr. A ranks this spring. The team graduates five year veteran and captain Chad Marentette as well as the two players from Point Edward the Clippers acquired at the trade deadline, Jack Dunn and Brett Barnes.

In other team news, Zane Dalpe has been named the 2019 western conference Rookie of the Year

Finally the Clippers wish to thank our tremendous fans, sponsors and volunteers for the outstanding support that we enjoy from our community.
