HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL
On how the team compensates for CB Johnson Bademosi on special teams if his playing time increases on defense against the Texans: “It just depends, depends on the individual. Don’t treat everybody the same. We adjust it accordingly to make sure that we can keep his performance of quality in both areas.”
On the importance special teams has had on the season so far: “Huge, obviously because it determines so much field position. It’s one of those things that oftentimes goes unnoticed, but you can’t help but notice what Sam (Martin) has been able to do. You look at the way in which he’s been punting the ball, our coverage units have been really good in that area, but every week’s a new challenge. We’ve got to do it again, same thing at kicking the ball off. Our drive-start average and those kinds of things, all of that’s very important to us, being able to convert. Obviously everybody understands the importance of field goals and PAT’s, all of those things, they’re quite evident, but special teams are really, really key and have been key for us.”
On if he sees Carter having the same contributions down the line that they expected of him after selecting him in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft: “Sure, I mean I think, you know, it’s one of the things you learn about this business is you don’t give up on guys, or let me put it this way. You don’t think that they’re going to just all of the sudden stop progressing, you know. I mean, you can think of a number of guys that after a certain point in time they have turnarounds. Some they do, some they don’t, some of it takes a change of scenery, whatever it might be, but I do think that he has ability.”
On the officials for Week 8 at Houston having called the second most penalties of any crew in the league: “Well, if we do what we’re supposed to do, we won’t have to worry about it. We don’t worry about officiating. If we properly and we do the things we’re supposed to do we don’t have to worry about it. If we’re poor in that area, then we’ve got a problem.”
On the way he wants to see a young player respond after being benched: “Well, you don’t expect them to be enthused about it or thrilled about it, you know? I mean, it’s difficult, but he accepts the challenge and he’s working to try to get better, you know. That’s the key and you want him to keep fighting and keep scratching and, you know, try to work hard to get that next opportunity to get back in there and he’s been doing that.”
On what makes Houston RB Lamar Miller so effective: “Speed, quickness. There’s one play in particular that, from a week ago or so, or a couple weeks. He ended up kind of catching a little ball right over the middle, goes to his right and comes back across the grain. Makes about six people miss into the end zone, so he’s got quickness. He can catch the ball, he can do a little bit of everything. He’s a really, really good player, excellent.”
On captains for Week 8 at Houston: “(Travis) Swanson, Glover Quin and Rafael Bush for special teams.”
Detroit (4-3) travels to Houston (4-3) in Week 8 to face the Texans for only the fourth time in the teams’ series history. The Lions look to extend a three-game winning streak following a 20-17 win over Washington last week, while the Texans fell to the Denver Broncos 27-9 on Monday Night Football in Week 8. Houston leads the all-time series 2-1-0 and won the teams’ most recent meeting 34-31 in overtime on Thanksgiving Day in 2012 (11/22).
