Day 3 Highlights

The third round of the 2025 Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club saw 20-year-old South African Aldrich Potgieter take command with a stellar performance, building a two-stroke lead heading into Sunday’s final round. Potgieter’s explosive start included four consecutive birdies on holes 4 through 7, demonstrating why he leads the PGA Tour in driving distance at a massive 326.6 yards.

The day featured some remarkable scoring, with Davis Thompson delivering one of the most electrifying rounds of the tournament. Thompson made three eagles in his first eight holes alone – on the par-4 1st, par-5 7th, and par-4 8th. Despite three bogeys on the front nine, he finished with a strong back nine to post 14-under overall.

Patrick Cantlay made the biggest early move of the day after barely making the cut. Starting at the cutline of -6, Cantlay went five-under through his first eight holes to leap into the top 10, demonstrating the scoring opportunities available at Detroit Golf Club.

Chasing Pack

Five players sit tied for second at -17, just two shots behind Potgieter. This group includes course record-holder Jake Knapp, who had shot an incredible 61 in the second round, and six-time PGA Tour winner Chris Kirk. Max Greyserman continues his quest for valuable FedEx Cup points, while Mark Hubbard and Andrew Putnam round out the players in contention just two strokes back.

Collin Morikawa remained in the hunt after rebounding from early tournament struggles with improved play. Looking for his first win in nearly two years, Morikawa has shown signs of returning to the form that made him a major champion.

Tournament Conditions

Scoring conditions remained extremely favorable at Detroit Golf Club during the third round, with the course yielding plenty of birdies and spectacular shots. The tournament has already seen the course record broken twice this week – initially with multiple 62s on Thursday before Jake Knapp’s remarkable 61 in the second round.

With a total purse of $9.6 million and $1.728 million going to the winner, Sunday’s final round promises to be a thrilling conclusion to this year’s Rocket Classic.
