St. Clair Men’s Baseball Split OUA Exhibition with Laurier
The St. Clair College Men’s Baseball team travelled to Waterloo on Friday and came away with an exhibition split against the OUA’s Wilfrid Laurier University winning 9-5 before losing 6-2.
In the opening contest the Saints went ahead 2-0 in the 3rd inning but fell behind 5-2 in the 4th. Seven unanswered runs for St. Clair in the 6th inning completed the scoring which awarded reliever Jonas Le Clair (Windsor, ON/Holy Names) the win who worked two scoreless innings. Rookie infielder Evan Schweyer (Lakeshore, ON/St. Anne) led the Saints offensively recording two singles and a walk with an RBI to go with a pair of runs scored. Fellow first year player Ryan Querbach (Belle River, ON/St. Anne) drove in a pair of runs with a single and a walk adding a run scored. Owen Levesque (Windsor, ON/St. Joseph’s) scored twice with a hit and an RBI for St. Clair. Kanaan Gale (Leamington, ON/Cardinal Carter) also plated a runner with a hit as did Erick Arosemena (Panama City, Panama) who also walked twice and scored once.
The Saints only managed two hits as a team in the second game which came from Querbach and Levesque. St. Clair led 2-0 in the 5th inning but gave up two in the bottom half and four more in the 6th. Starter Michael Grondin (Windsor, ON/Riverside) and Tyler Brown-Amlin (Windsor, ON/Sandwich) combined to throw the first four scoreless innings for the Saints.
St. Clair will begin their OCAA regular season on the road against Sheridan College (Brampton) at Quenippenon Meadows Community Park in Mississauga on Saturday with doubleheader game times of 1:00pm and 3:30pm. The Saints will host Lambton College (Sarnia) in their home opener at Lacasse Park on Wed, Sep. 10th at 7:00pm.
St. Clair will play host to the Provincial Championship tournament Oct. 16-18 looking to equal their record of five consecutive OCAA Baseball titles.
St. Clair Women’s Softball End Exhibition Schedule by Splitting with Windsor
The St. Clair College Women’s Softball team ended their exhibition schedule this past weekend with a home and home split going 2-2 over four games with the University of Windsor Club program. The Lancers hosted a pair Friday evening at Mic Mac Park with the Saints dropping the opener 3-2 in eight innings but then rebounded for a 7-2 victory. The 4-game set finished Sunday at the St. Clair SportsPark which saw more competitive action with the Saints falling 6-4 before prevailing 5-4 in eight innings.
Trailing 2-0 in the 5th inning of the opener on Friday St. Clair used a 2-RBI single by Ashley-Rae Brill (LaSalle, ON/St. Thomas of Villanova) that eventually sent the game to an extra frame where the Lancers scored their international tie-breaker runner on an error. Judy Lafleur (Essex, ON/Essex District) had a pair of hits in the loss for the Saints.
Lafleur kept her hot bat going in the second game on Friday with three hits and scored three times while Chloe Cole (LaSalle, ON/St. Thomas of Villanova) recorded three RBI on her two hits for St. Clair. Reese Grondin (LaSalle, ON/St. Thomas of Villanova) had a solo home run with Molly Cacilhas (Essex, ON/Essex District) and Kamryn Coombs (Atwood, ON) each contributing two hits with a run scored. Cacilhas helped her cause on the pitching strip who worked three hitless and scoreless innings in relief to pick up a save. St. Clair starter Ashton Fong (Colwood, BC) earned the win in four innings of work giving up a pair of runs on five hits while striking out four Lancers.
In the opening game Sunday afternoon, the Saints could not hold down a 4-2 lead after surrendering a pair of runs in the 6th and 7th innings. Ada Umerah (Maple, ON) and Ashley Marchand (Fergus, ON) each had two hits for St. Clair in the loss.
The final contest saw the Saints fall behind 4-3 in the 7th inning before scoring the equalizer in the bottom half and then secured the walk-off victory in the 8th. Zahnyah Jackson (Brampton, ON) led St. Clair offensively with three hits that led to her crossing home plate three times. Marchand also had three hits and added an RBI for the Saints with teammate Umerah notching a double as part of her 2-hit game. Fong secured the pitching win in relief covering the 5th and 6th frames but also re-entered to close out the 8th inning finishing with no runs across while surrendering only one hit to go with three strikeouts.
St. Clair opens their OCAA regular season next weekend with a doubleheader against rival Durham College (Oshawa) at the SportsPark on Saturday. The homestand finishes with a doubleheader versus Sheridan College (Brampton) on Sunday. Game times both days are set for 1:00pm and 3:00pm.
St. Clair will be welcoming back the 2005 OCAA Championship squad who won the first Women’s Softball Provincial title in program history for the Saints and this fall marks the 20th Anniversary of that accomplishment. The reunion recognition will commence at 12:45pm prior to the start of the Durham doubleheader.
