TIGERS TRADE RHP CASEY MIZE & INF GAGE WORKMAN, ACQUIRE LHPs KASH MAYFIELD & JACKSON WOLF FROM SAN DIEGO PADRES
The Detroit Tigers have acquired left-handed pitching prospects Kash Mayfield and Jackson Wolf from the San Diego Padres for right-handed pitcher Casey Mize and infielder Gage Workman.
Mayfield, 21, joins the Tigers organization after having been ranked the #2 prospect by MLB Pipeline in the Padres organization, and he represented San Diego at the Futures Game in Philadelphia last month. Mayfield was selected by the Padres in the first round (25th overall) of the 2024 Draft out of Elk City High School in Oklahoma. Mayfield will report to Single-A West Michigan.
In his first professional season in 2025, Mayfield made 19 starts with Single-A Lake Elsinore, pitching to a 2.97 ERA (20ER/60.2IP). Over his 60.2 innings with the Storm, he struck out 88 batters compared to just 28 walks, ranking second in strikeout rate (34.1%) and third in walk rate (23.3%) among Single-A pitchers with at least 60.0 innings in 2025. The left-hander has made 15 starts with Fort Wayne this season, going 3-1 with a 3.54 ERA (21ER/53.1IP) striking out 62 batters.
Wolf, 27, was selected by the Padres in the fourth round of the 2021 Draft out of West Virginia University and has pitched the last six seasons in the Padres organization, including one major league relief appearance back in 2023. He has pitched in 24 games (17 starts) this year for Triple-A El Paso, striking out 90 batters over 89.1 innings. He will report to Triple-A Toledo.
Casey Mize was originally selected by the Tigers with the first overall pick of the 2018 Draft out of Auburn University. In all or part of six major league seasons, Mize went 27-31 with a 3.95 ERA in 105 appearances, including 103 starts. He went 4-6 with a 2.70 ERA in 16 starts with the Tigers this year, posting a 0.99 WHIP.
Workman has split the 2026 campaign between the Tigers and Triple-A Toledo. He was originally selected by Detroit in the fourth round of the 2020 Draft out of Arizona State University.
