Windsor Spitfires Storm Back in 3rd Over Guelph
The Windsor Spitfires scored three unanswered goal in the third period to come from behind and defeat the Guelph Storm 3-1 at the WFCU Centre Saturday night.
Trailing 1-0 after 40 minutes of play, Mikhail Sergachev brought the Spitfires (35-13-5-3) back to even terms when he finished off an end to end rush when his backhander trickled past a startled Anthony Popovich in the Guelph net. The goal was the ninth of the season for the Russian defenceman who was the first round pick of the Montreal Canadiens in 2016.
Jeremy Addison then gave the Spitfires their first lead of the game before Luke Boka finshed out the scoring with just over two minutes left in the contest,
Defenceman Austin McEneny chipped in with a pair of assists and was a plus three on the night.
Ryan Merkley, the first overall pick in the 2016 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection, scored the lone goal for the Storm (19-31-3-2) who lost for just the third time this season when leading after two periods.
Michael DiPietro made 15 saves to pick up the win in net while Popovich made 28 stops at the other end. While neither goaltender was overly busy, both were steady if unspectacular when called upon to make a save.
The Spitfires schedule has them off until next Thursday night when they host the Saginaw Spirit.
