PALMIERI JOINS ELITE COMPANY AS DEVILS IMPROVE TO 3-0-0

Kyle Palmieri (2-0—2) recorded his third multi-goal outing in as many contests to lift the Devils to their third consecutive victory to open the 2018-19 campaign.

  • Palmieri, who also scored twice on Oct. 6 vs. EDM at the 2018 NHL Global Series and Oct. 11 vs. WSH, became just the fourth player in NHL history to post multi-goal outings in each of his team’s first three games to begin a season.
  • The Smithtown, N.Y., native established a franchise record for most goals by a player through the team’s first three games of a season. A 30-goal scorer in his first season with the Devils (2015-16), Palmieri has tallied at least 24 goals in each of the past three campaigns. He did not reach the six-goal mark until his 21st contest in 2017-18 (Jan. 4 at DAL).
  • The final episode of Behind The Glass: New Jersey Devils Training Camp will air tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET on NHL Network. Click here for a sneak peek at the final episode. The previous three episodes are available at NHL.com/BehindTheGlass.

PAVELSKI HITS 700-POINT MILESTONE
Sharks captain Joe Pavelski scored for the third time in three contests to reach the 700-point milestone (320-380—700), joining Patrick Marleau (508-574—1,082) and Joe Thornton (228-746—974) as the only players in franchise history to accomplish the feat. Pavelski, selected in the seventh round (205th overall) of the 2003 NHL Draft, became just the fifth player in League history to record 700 career points after being drafted 200th overall or later.

THIRD-PERIOD RALLIES LEAD CLUBS TO VICTORY
All three games Sunday were decided in the third period, with the final two games of the night decided by winners from Ducks forward Andrew Cogliano and Jets forward Bryan Little.

  • After surrendering a 3-0 lead Saturday, the Ducks overcame a 2-1 third-period deficit on the strength of Cogliano’s 30th career game-winning goal. Forward Ben Street, who scored his first NHL goal on Wednesday at age 31 – after 428 AHL games and 38 NHL games – netted the tying goal on Sunday.
  • Little scored the go-ahead goal with 2:09 remaining in regulation to lead the Jets to their 11th consecutive regular-season win at Bell MTS Place dating to March 2, 2018. Little’s tally marked the fifth go-ahead goal in the final five minutes of regulation this season and third in the past two days (also Cody Eakin: 58:35 w/ VGK and Mikael Granlund: 55:47 w/ MIN).

STREAKING SCORERS TAKE TO THE ICE MONDAY
Three clubs in action Monday feature players with season-opening streaks:

  • Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews, the League leader in goals and points thus far (10-4—14 in 6 GP), aims to become the fifth player in NHL history to open a season with multiple points in seven consecutive team games. The only players to do so: Mario Lemieux (12 GP in 1992-93), Kevin Stevens (8 GP in 1992-93), Wayne Gretzky (7 GP in 1983-84) and Mike Bossy (7 GP in 1984-85).
  • Stars forward Alexander Radulov, who set career highs in goals (27), assists (45) and points (72) in his first season with Dallas in 2017-18, has found the back of the net in each of the club’s first four games to open the 2018-19 campaign. Dino Ciccarelli (6 GP in 1986-87) is the only player in franchise history with a longer season-opening goal streak.
  • Did You Know? Six players in the NHL’s modern era (since 1943-44) have recorded a season-opening goal streak of at least seven games, with Tampa Bay’s Nikita Kucherov achieving the feat in 2017-18. Lemieux’s aforementioned multi-point streak also stands as the longest season-opening goal streak in the modern era.
  • Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly (3-10—13 in 6 GP) aims to become the fifth different defenseman in NHL history to record 14 or more points in his team’s first seven games of a season. The only blueliners to do so: Harry Cameron (10-6—16 in 1917-18), Paul Reinhart (5-10—15 in 1989-90), Bobby Orr (2-12—14 in 1969-70; 4-10—14 in 1973-74) and Paul Coffey (2-12—14 in 1988-89).
  • Stars defenseman John Klingberg (3-2—5 in 4 GP) can tie the franchise record for longest season-opening point streak by a defenseman, a mark set by Darryl Sydor in 1998-99 (4-6—10 in 5 GP). Klingberg, who also opened 2017-18 with a four-game point streak, is the sixth defenseman in League history to record a season-opening point streak of at least four games in consecutive campaigns.
  • The Senators boast a blueline that has combined for an NHL-best eight goals by defensemen this season, with second-year blueliner Thomas Chabot (2-6—8) leading the team in points. On the score sheet in all five games in 2018-19, Chabot trails only Filip Kuba (2008-09: 0-11—11 in 8 GP) for the longest season-opening point streak by a Senators defenseman. Teammate Chris Tierney, acquired via trade on Sept. 13, has registered at least one point in all five appearances with the Senators (2-5—7).

Bergeron, Rielly and Aho Named NHL ‘Three Stars’ of the Week NHL Public Relations October 15, 2018

Boston Bruins center Patrice Bergeron, Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly and Carolina Hurricanes right wing Sebastian Aho have been named the NHL’s “Three Stars” for the week ending Oct. 14.

FIRST STAR – PATRICE BERGERON, C, BOSTON BRUINS

Bergeron led the NHL with 4-5—9 in three games as the Bruins (4-1-0, 8 points) registered a perfect week to extend their winning streak to four contests. He collected 3‑1—4, including his fourth career hat trick and the decisive goal, in 6-3 triumph over the Ottawa Senators Oct. 8. In doing so, Bergeron became the fifth player in Bruins history – and first since 1995-96 (Cam Neely) – to record a hat trick in the team’s home opener. He added 1-1—2 in a 4-1 win against the Edmonton Oilers Oct. 11 before closing the week with 0-3—3, his ninth career three-assist performance, in an 8-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings Oct. 13. The 33-year-old Ancienne-Lorette, Que., native – who sits six goals shy of the 300-goal milestone (294-451—745 in 968 GP) – paces Boston and ranks third in the NHL with 5-6—11 in five appearances this season.

SECOND STAR – MORGAN RIELLY, D, TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS

Rielly posted a League-leading six assists and ranked fourth overall with 1-6—7 in three outings to help the Maple Leafs (5-1-0, 10 points) also extend their winning streak to four games. He established a career high with four helpers in a 7-4 victory against the Dallas Stars Oct. 9. Rielly then collected 1-1—2 in a 5-3 triumph over the Detroit Red Wings Oct. 11 and one assist in a 4-2 win against the Washington Capitals Oct. 13. The 24-year-old Vancouver native, who has notched at least one point in each of his six appearances this season, ranks second in the NHL with 3-10—13 overall. Only two other defensemen in League history have recorded as many points through their team’s opening six games: Toronto’s Harry Cameron in 1917-18 (9-6—15) and Vancouver’s Paul Reinhart in 1989-90 (5-9—14).

THIRD STAR – SEBASTIAN AHO, RW, CAROLINA HURRICANES

Aho also extended his season-opening point streak to six games, placing third in the NHL with 3-4—7 in three contests as the Hurricanes (4-1-1, 9 points) picked up a pair of wins. He collected 1-1—2 in a 5-3 victory over the Vancouver Canucks Oct. 9. Aho then matched a career high with 2-2—4, highlighted by his second career overtime goal, in a 5-4 triumph against the Minnesota Wild Oct. 13. He closed the week with one assist in a 3-1 loss to the Winnipeg Jets Oct. 14. The 21-year-old Rauma, Finland, native – who became the sixth player in Hurricanes/Whalers history to post a season-opening point streak of at least six games – sits fourth in League scoring with 4-7—11 overall.
