TIGERS AGREE TO TERMS WITH RIGHTHANDED PITCHER TYSON ROSS
The Detroit Tigers have agreed to terms with righthanded pitcher Tyson Ross on a one-year Major League contract.
Ross, 31, split the 2018 season between San Diego and St. Louis. In 22 starts with the Padres, Ross had a 6-9 record with a 4.45 ERA (123.1IP/61ER) and 107 strikeouts, while he compiled a 2-0 record with a 2.73 ERA (26.1IP/8ER) and 15 strikeouts in nine appearances, including one start, with the Cardinals. Ross limited righthanded batters to a .176 (47×267) batting average last season, which was the second-lowest among all Major League pitchers, and he was eighth with a .565 OPS vs. righties (min. 250 at-bats vs. righthanded hitters).
Originally drafted by Oakland in the second round of the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, Ross has played nine Major League seasons with Oakland (2010-12), San Diego (2013-16, 2018), Texas (2017) and St. Louis (2018), posting a 43-65 record with one save, a 3.95 ERA (869.1IP/382ER) and 791 strikeouts. Ross was named to the National League All-Star Team in 2014 with the Padres, compiling a 13-14 record with a 2.81 ERA (195.2IP/61ER) and 195 strikeouts in 31 starts.
A native of Berkeley, California, Ross played college baseball at the University of California, earning All-Pac-10 honors in 2007 and 2008. He finished his collegiate career with 271 strikeouts, which were the third-most in school history at the time.
With the signing of Ross, the Tigers 40-man roster is now at 38.
