St. Clair Women’s Basketball End Season with Quarterfinal Loss

The St. Clair College Women’s Basketball team ended their season with a 67-56 quarterfinal loss to Lambton College (Sarnia) Friday night at the OCAA Women’s Basketball Championship being hosted by Niagara College in Welland.

Lambton went ahead 24-13 after the opening frame and increased their lead to 39-26 by halftime. The Saints struggled in the third quarter only producing nine points as Lambton ballooned their stranglehold by as much as 26 points early in the fourth quarter. St. Clair mounted a good comeback in the final period outscoring Lambton 21-9 down the stretch. But the damage was done as the Saints could only shrink the deficit to the 11-point difference by the final buzzer.

Lambton shot a better percentage from the floor (43% to 32%) and from distance (37% to 30%) than St. Clair in addition to winning the rebounding war 42-30. The Saints did make 10 triples in the contest, but it was not enough to stem the tide.

Shae-lyn Murphy (Windsor, ON/Holy Names) earned Player of the Game recognition after nearly recording a double-double with 16 points and 9 assists. Janae Smith (Warren, MI) had a fine game with 14 points and 8 rebounds while Grace Smrke (Sudbury, ON) also reached double figures for St. Clair with 13 points to go with 8 rebounds.

Breanna Pretty (Sarnia, ON) had 14 points to take Lambton’s Player of the Game Award.
