Montreal Canadiens and the Detroit Red Wings faced off on November 9, 2023 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, an encounter that ended in an overtime loss for the Wings. The Canadiens however, managed to break their four-game losing streak, attributing to a powerplay goal from Cole Caufield.
The Canadiens managed to dominate the first period, scoring the only goal. Mike Matheson, who has been a significant asset for the team, was left open in the high slot and didn’t hesitate to seize the opportunity. He took a drop pass from Alex Newhook and fired a quick shot over Reimer’s left shoulder.
Detroit’s performance in the first period raised concerns as they have been outscored 8-1 in the first period of their last eight games.
The second period saw a controversial moment when Sean Monahan scored for the Canadiens. However, a Detroit coach’s challenge led to an offside ruling at the blue line, disallowing the goal.
Despite this setback, Montreal was unable to maintain their lead. Detroit managed to tie the game when Michael Rasmussen’s shot deflected off Christian Fischer’s left glove.
The third period was a roller-coaster ride. The Canadiens took the lead early with a powerplay goal from Nick Suzuki. However, the Red Wings were able to tie the game again, thanks to J.T. Compher’s top corner pick.
As regulation ended knotted at 2-2, the game moved to overtime.
In the overtime period, Cole Caufield scored the powerplay at 4:04, securing the Canadiens’ victory. The goal was Caufield’s fifth of the season and came as a result of Reimer’s holding penalty.
Cayden Primeau was the goalie who stopped 27 shots for his first win of the season. Despite being the team’s third choice, his performance was commendable.
The Red Wings have been struggling recently, losing six of eight (2-4-2) overall and four of their last five (1-3-1) at home. Their first-period performance has been a significant concern, with an 8-1 outscore in their last eight games.
The Canadiens managed to end their 0-3-1 slide with this victory. Their performance was a significant improvement, and they could maintain consistency throughout the game.
James Reimer had 23 saves for Detroit.
