Soo GreyHounds Defeat Spitfires
David Miller scored a goal and added an assist and Joseph Raaymakers made 28 saves as the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds defeated the Windsor Spitfires 3-1 at the WFCU Centre in Windsor Thursday night.
Raaymakers was steady if unspectacular in his first start of the season after returning earlier in the week from the National Hockey League training camp of the New York Rangers.
The ‘Hounds (2-1-0) scored one goal per period to hand the Spitfires (2-1-0) their first defeat of the young Ontario Hockey League season.
Bobby McIntyre opened the scoring in the game with a first period powerplay marker before Barrett Hayton scored in the second frame to give the Soo a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes of play. Hayton’s first career OHL goal ended up being the game-winner.
Rookie right-winger Cole Purboo scored in his third straight game to give the Spitfires some hope in the third period before Miller scored into an empty net to round out the scoring in the game.
The game marked the return to the Windsor lineup of both centre Logan Brown and defenceman Jalen Chatfield who returned from the NHL training camps of the Ottawa Senators and San Jose Sharks respectively on Wednesday. The pair’s return left the Spitfires with six players still away at pro camps.
Michael DiPietro made 25 saves while taking his first loss in goal for the Spitfires.
Windsor’s next game is on the road Friday night in Mississauga for a contest with the Steelheads.
