2017 MICHIGAN SPORTS HALL OF FAME INDUCTION CLASS

The Michigan Sports Hall of Fame announced the Induction Class of 2017. The Class was selected by a statewide, blue-ribbon group of veteran sports journalists, select college and professional sports administrators, MSHOF members, the MSHOF Board of Directors and also a public online vote.

“The Michigan Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class is made up of household names and memorable contributors from the world of sports that have achieved prominence and represented their teams, schools and the State of Michigan. This class’ prominence will be on full display at our annual Induction Event on Friday September 15th, when it will be formally enshrined.” – Scott Lesher, MSHOF chairman

The Induction Class of 2017

  • Mitch Albom – Since arriving in Detroit in 1985, he has brought the stories of Michigan sports via newspaper, books, radio and TV to a national audience. 
  • Greg Kampe – In 33 years as the Head Coach of Oakland University basketball, he successfully led the program’s transition to Division I. 
  • Jon Jansen – The Clawson native was a University of Michigan football captain and played 10 years in the NFL.
  • Jim Leyland – The World Series winning manager led the Detroit Tigers to two American League titles. 
  • Dean Look – The Lansing native quarterbacked at Michigan State, played in the American Football League as well as baseball for the Chicago White Sox, he went onto a 29-year career as a NFL official, including three Super Bowls. 
  • Andre Rison – The Flint native starred at Michigan State and for 11 years in the NFL.
  • Dennis Rodman – The 14-year NBA veteran, 5-time NBA Champion and 7-time NBA rebounding leader was a key member of the Detroit Pistons Championship teams in 1989 and 1990.
  • Jalen Rose – The Detroit native was a State Champion at Southwestern High, led the University of Michigan to back-to-back National Championship appearances and played 13 seasons in the NBA.
In addition, the Hall will recognize four Michigan Treasures as part of its induction ceremonies.
  • Dorene Ingalls – A four-sport athlete from the Upper Peninsula who has coached St. Ignace LaSalle High School to five State Championships in girls’ basketball while confined to a wheelchair since 2005.
  • Michigan Panthers – The 1983 United States Football League Champions.
  • Dawn Riley – The Harrison Township native was the first woman to compete in the America’s Cup races.
  • Ryan Shay – The Ypsilanti native won multiple distance running championships before passing away at the age of 28 during U.S. Olympic trials. 
The Induction Ceremony will take place on Friday September 15, 2017 at 6 p.m. at the Max M. Fisher Music Center in Detroit.
