BEIJING (February 5, 2022) – Day 1 at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games has come to a close. Here is what you need to know.
MEDAL COUNT AFTER DAY 1:
GOLD: 0
SILVER: 1
BRONZE: 1
TOTAL: 2
DAY 1 RESULTS AND DAY 2 SCHEDULE:
LONG TRACK SPEED SKATING
Isabelle Weidemann has captured Team Canada’s first Beijing 2022 Olympic medal. Her bronze is Team Canada’s fourth Olympic medal in the women’s 3000m event (Cindy Klassen in 2002 and 2006, Kristina Groves in 2010 – all bronze).
The bronze is Canada’s 200th medal all-time at the Olympic Winter Games. Please note that Canada came into the Games with 200 medals in winter sports, but that counts a gold medal in hockey from Antwerp 1920 before the first Olympic Winter Games.
FREESTYLE SKIING
With a silver medal, Mikaël Kingsbury has become the first male freestyle skier to win three Olympic medals. He is only the second to do so in any freestyle skiing discipline (following Norwegian mogulist Kari Traa).
SHORT TRACK SPEED SKATING
Team Canada competed in the inaugural mixed relay event.
COVID-19 UPDATE:
