Bruins Stage Third-Period Comeback to Defeat Red Wings 4-2 in Wild Card Battle

The Boston Bruins mounted an impressive third-period rally to defeat the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 on Saturday night at Little Caesars Arena. This crucial Eastern Conference wild card showdown drew 19,515 fans and had significant playoff implications for both teams.

Swayman Steals the Show

Jeremy Swayman delivered a spectacular performance between the pipes for Boston, making 41 saves to backstop the Bruins’ comeback victory. His stellar play kept Detroit at bay throughout the game, particularly during the first two periods when the Red Wings dominated possession.

“That was the best I’ve seen (Swayman) play since I’ve been around,” said Bruins coach Marco Sturm. “He was unbelievable – he won the game for us.”

Third Period Heroics Seal Victory

The game remained tight through two periods, with each team scoring once. However, the Bruins exploded for three goals in the final frame to secure the win. Alex DeBrincat initially gave Detroit a 2-1 lead at 4:06 of the third period with a beautiful wrist shot over Swayman’s glove.

Boston responded quickly. Elias Lindholm tied the game just 2:16 later with a low wrist shot inside the far post. Defenseman Nikita Zadorov then delivered the game-winner at 9:42, beating John Gibson with a long shot that surprised the Detroit netminder. Marat Khusnutdinov added an empty-net goal with 1:52 remaining.

Milestone Night for Pastrnak

David Pastrnak reached a significant career milestone, recording his 500th NHL assist on Khusnutdinov’s empty-net goal. The assist came in his 820th game, making him the fourth-fastest player in Bruins history to reach 500 assists. Pastrnak also scored Boston’s first goal on a 5-on-3 power play in the second period.

Key Moments That Shaped the Game

Detroit appeared to take the lead late in the first period when J.T. Compher knocked in his own rebound. However, video review showed the clock hit 0.0 just before the puck crossed the goal line, nullifying the goal.

Additionally, the Bruins’ Lukas Reichel had a penalty shot opportunity in the third period that could have sealed the game earlier. Gibson made a crucial pad save to keep Detroit’s hopes alive temporarily.

Standout Performances

Morgan Geekie contributed three assists for Boston, giving him seven points in four games against Detroit this season. Lucas Raymond opened the scoring for the Red Wings with a power-play goal in the second period. DeBrincat extended his point streak to six games with his third-period goal.

Playoff Race Implications

This victory moved Boston two points ahead of Detroit for the first wild card position in the Eastern Conference. The Bruins now sit fourth in the Atlantic Division with 86 points, while the Red Wings dropped to fifth with 84 points.

Detroit remains just one point ahead of the New York Islanders for the second wild card spot. The Red Wings are desperately seeking their first playoff appearance since 2015-16, making every remaining game crucial as the regular season winds down.
