WESTERN MICHIGAN DEFEATS MICHIGAN TECH, 1-0, TO WIN MACINNES CUP IN FINAL GREAT LAKES INVITATIONAL AT THE JOE
WMU’s Colt Conrad Named Tournament MVP after Scoring OT Winner
The Western Michigan Broncos claimed their third MacInnes Cup after defeating the Michigan Tech Huskies in overtime, 1-0, in the championship game of the 52nd annual Great Lakes Invitational on Friday night at Joe Louis Arena. Earlier in the day, Michigan defeated Michigan State, 5-4, in an overtime thriller to claim third place in the final GLI played at The Joe.
Western Michigan forward Colt Conrad scored the game-winning goal at 11:55 of overtime to give the Broncos their first GLI title since 2013, which also was a 1-0 overtime victory over the Huskies. Conrad’s goal came after the two teams finished regulation scoreless, resulting in the 11th GLI championship game to require extra time. Conrad earned tournament MVP honors after he jammed home a shot from near the crease for the game-winner and his fourth goal of the season. WMU freshman goaltender Ben Blacker was stellar, recording a 23-save shutout in the win and allowing only one goal in two games during the GLI. Defenseman Corey Schueneman (two assists) and forward Matheson Iacopelli (one goal, one assist) also joined Conrad and Blacker on the All-Tournament Team.
