St. Clair Women’s Volleyball End Semester with Big Win

The St. Clair women’s volleyball team concluded their OCAA regular season schedule at the Sportsplex on Saturday afternoon and came away with a big 3-1 win over the Niagara College Knights (Welland).

Set scores for St. Clair 17-25, 25-20, 25-13 and 25-23.

Second year outside hitter Kiana Huggins (London; Saunders) led the way offensively for the Saints with 18 kills, 1 assist, and 14 digs which included a 441 kill percentage. Rooke middle Geneva Huisman (Amhertsburg; Marantha Christian) also had a big game with 10 kills (444 kill percentage), 1 service ace and 3 stuff blocks.

With the win St. Clair improved to 7-2 on the season while Niagara dropped to 6-3. The Saints are currently ranked 5th in Ontario while the Knights are ranked 4th in the OCAA. St. Clair has won 23 sets and only dropped 12 in the first semester.

St. Clair Men’s Volleyball Drop Heartbreaker to End Semester

The St. Clair men’s volleyball team wrapped up their first semester OCAA schedule with a tough 3-2 loss to the Niagara College Knights (Welland) on Saturday afternoon at the Sportsplex. In a very entertaining back and forth match the Knights took the fifth and deciding set 16-14.

Set scores for Niagara were 16-25, 25-23, 12-25, 25-18 and 16-14.

Rookie outside hitter Kale Wilkinson (Windsor; Riverside) led the way offensively for the Saints with 14 kills, 3 stuff blocks, 1 service ace and 4 digs. Second year middle Jonah Certossi (Belle River; Belle River District) had a great match as well with 8 kills, 3 stuff blocks and a 368 kill percentage. Second year outside hitter Marc Galipeau (LaSalle; Sandwich) had a solid match as well with 12 kills, 3 stuff blocks, 1 service ace and 9 digs.

With the win St. Clair dropped to 4-5 on the season while Niagara improved to 6-3. Niagara is ranked 5th in Ontario. It was the fourth time in 9 matches the Saints have gone to a fifth and deciding set. St. Clair has won 18 sets and lost 20.

St. Clair Women’s Basketball Best Redeemer

The St. Clair College Women’s Basketball team started their weekend road trip with a 70-55 win over Redeemer University (Ancaster) Saturday evening and pushed their record above .500 to 4-3 in the OCAA’s West Division.

Redeemer was no match early for a hot shooting (55%) Saints squad who took a 30-16 lead after the first quarter. St. Clair cooled off in next frame but were still ahead 38-26 by the halftime intermission. Redeemer closed to within seven points in the third quarter, but the Saints were able to create a comfortable cushion for the remainder of the game.

Shae-Lyn Murphy (Windsor, ON/Holy Names) led all scorers with 20 points but contributed 4 rebounds and 4 steals for St. Clair. Alyssa Lucier (Wallaceburg, ON) and Janae Smith (Warren, MI) were the other Saints to reach double figures who each netted 14 points.

Although outrebounded (48-41) in the contest St. Clair was able to create 27 more shot attempts than Redeemer while converting a higher percentage which included a 12-4 advantage in points around the basket. The Saints also scored 22 points off 26 Redeemer turnovers.

Julia Stayshyn (Dundas, ON) scored 14 points for Redeemer in the loss.

St. Clair Women’s Basketball Grind Out Conestoga Win

The St. Clair College Women’s Basketball team finished off the first half of their regular season schedule with a hard fought 58-52 win at Conestoga College in Kitchener Sunday afternoon.  With a 5-3 record the Saints have slotted themselves into 3rd place in the OCAA’s West Division. 

A tight game throughout St. Clair managed to stake themselves to a modest 15-12 lead after the first quarter and increased their advantage to 34-28 by halftime.  Conestoga inched back into contention winning the third quarter 14-12 but the Saints pushed their lead to as much as 11 points early in the fourth.  Conestoga made a late run but would come no closer than five points down the stretch.

St. Clair’s Shae-Lyn Murphy (Windsor, ON/Holy Names) led all scorers with 19 points and added 6 rebounds.  Janae Smith (Warren, MI) was a rebound shy of a double-double with 18 points and 9 boards for the Saints while Alyssa Lucier (Wallaceburg, ON) was almost as impressive with 13 points and 8 rebounds. 

The teams matched themselves nearly even in most statistical categories, but the Saints limited the home team to under 30% shooting and just one make from beyond the 3-point arc. 

Conestoga’s Yasmeen Smith (Cambridge, ON) scored 18 points in a losing effort. 

St. Clair Men’s Basketball Too Much for Redeemer

The St. Clair College Men’s Basketball team won 85-57 in convincing fashion over Redeemer University in Ancaster Saturday night.  The Saints are now 6-2 which currently places them 2nd in the OCAA’s West Division.

Chad Vincent-Simon (Scarborough, ON) led the Saints out of the gate with 10 points in the first quarter propelling his team to a 27-22 lead.  St. Clair went to work defensively before halftime forcing the home team into 10 turnovers in the second quarter and only allowed 5 field goals and 11 points by Redeemer for a 53-33 halftime spread.  The Saints coasted the remainder of the contest with eleven players recording a basket on the score sheet. 

St. Clair won all four quarters and held an advantage in every statistical category aside from rebounding.  30 Redeemer turnovers led to 24 points by the Saints who also made 10 triples in the game. 

A balanced St. Clair scoring attack was headlined by Jesiah Deerr (Whitby, ON) who came off the bench to record 16 points to go with 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Vincent-Simon and Shakael Pryce (Pickering, ON) each scored 15 points with Hanani Ujullu (Kitchener, ON) chipping in with 10 points while adding 7 rebounds for St. Clair.

Parker Davis (Hamilton, ON) was the only Royal in double figures with 14 points in the loss.

Overtime Not Kind to St. Clair Men’s Basketball in Kitchener

For the second time this season the St. Clair College Men’s Basketball team lost in overtime with a 110-101 verdict against Conestoga College in Kitchener Sunday afternoon.  The loss drops the Saints into a 4-way tie at 6-3 in the OCAA’s West Division before the semester break.

Conestoga jumped ahead 21-13 after the opening quarter but St. Clair was nearly unstoppable in the second frame shooting 64% from the field including 80% from the deep on their way to 41 points and a 54-43 halftime lead.  Conestoga responded and only trailed 72-69 heading to the final quarter where they erased the deficit completely.  St. Clair had their chances late in regulation, but the game headed to an extra five minutes.  The home team was almost perfect in overtime and only missed once each from the field and a single free throw for a 20-point output which the Saints could not match.  

Shakael Pryce (Pickering, ON) posted a outstanding triple-double for St. Clair scoring a team high 22 points to go with 13 rebounds and 12 assists.  Chad Vincent-Simon (Scarborough, ON) scored 21 points with Jalen Harmon (Ypsilanti, MI) netting 15 points for the Saints.  Jesiah Deerr (Whitby, ON) came off the bench to score 13 points which was matched by teammate Hanani Ujullu (Kitchener, ON) with Darnelle Peddie (Pickering, ON) rounding out six St. Clair players in double figures with 11 points. 

Conestoga had a pair of players reach the 40-point plateau led by Ladera Ujullu-Obang (Kitchener, ON) with a game high 43 and Terell Lloyd (Woodstock, ON) with 40. 

The game featured five ties and eight lead changes while Conestoga shot an even 50% from the field which included ten makes from the beyond the 3-point arc.  But they were equally adept in the paint where they outscored St. Clair 58-48.
