In what amounted to a post-season tuneup, the Windsor AKO Fratmen beat the visiting GTA Grizzlies 31-6 Saturday afternoon to run their undefeated Ontario Football Conference record to 7-0.
AKO Fratmen will wrap up their regular season schedule this Saturday when they travel to Burlington and then head to the playoffs where they will attempt to defend their two-time league title.
While Saturday’s win over the Grizzlies left no doubt that the Fratmen continue to be the dominate team in the Conference, this victory was far from pretty.
AKO Fratmen only scored one offensive touchdown when quarterback Austin Lumley connected with receiver Stephen Russo for a major in the third quarter.
Penalties hurt the winners in this one as Richard Veenstra intercepted a pass and went in to score but it was waved off due to a penalty. Nathan Leader hauled in a pass from Lumley and it too was called off.
The defence played a strong role in this win for Windsor as Tyler Storie picked off a GTA sidelines pass on the visitors’ first possession of the game. AKO’s second touchdown came when Jake Nicoletti rushed the Grizzlies quarterback, recovered a fumble and dove across the goal line.
Big Hoyeon Choi and Darren Quennell combined for a sack late in the game which eventually led to the Grizzlies conceding their second two-point safety of the day.
Windsor kicker Clark Green was solid once again as he hit all his PAT’s and booted a couple of field goals.
