The University of Windsor’s Department of Athletics announced the hiring of Andy Hahn as the new head coach of the Lancer Track and Field and Cross Country program.
Andy Hahn takes over for legendary Lancer coach Dennis Fairall who stepped down after the 2014-15 season on a long-term medical leave.
“We are pleased to welcome Andy as the new head coach for Lancer track and field and cross country,” said Director of Athletics Mike Havey. “As an alumnus of the program, Coach Hahn has a deep appreciation for the history and success of our team. He has a strong vision for the future and the passion and energy to pursue the realization of that vision. We welcome Andy back to the Lancer family.”
Widely respected as a coach in Windsor-Essex County and throughout the province, the London, Ontario native joins the Lancers after most recently spending four seasons as the head coach of the St. Clair College cross country program from 2011-15.
During his time at St. Clair, he built the Saints into a provincial and national calibre program, including leading them to a CCAA Women’s team bronze medal and a Men’s fourth place team finish at nationals in 2013. That same year, the Saints women’s team won an OCAA provincial gold medal and the men’s team won a provincial bronze medal. For his efforts, Hahn was recognized as the OCAA Coach of the Year.
“I am very honoured to be named the head coach for the Lancer track and field and cross country program, I look forward to working with the staff in the athletic department and at the University of Windsor to help provide an outstanding experience for our student-athletes. We will work very hard to continue to achieve the level of excellence that has been created by Dennis Fairall while also continuing to grow the program for the future.” – Andy Hahn
Prior to coaching at St. Clair College, Andy worked under Coach Fairall as an assistant coach at the University of Windsor from 2005-10. During his time with the program, the Lancers captured nine conference team titles, five CIS national team titles, three National individual champions and fifteen CIS all-Canadians, including national team members Jackie Malette, Andrew Coates and Cristiano Mauricio.
Andy Hahn has also been a national team coach for Athletics Canada where he served as a Canadian Cross Country team coach at the 2013 NACAC Championships.
Dr. Michael Khan, Dean of the Faculty of Kinetics, is excited to have Andy joining the faculty. “I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Andy to the University of Windsor,” said Dr. Khan. “His strong ties to the local track and field community will help provide student-athletes an avenue to pursue excellence both athletically and academically at the University of Windsor.”
Hahn has spent the past fourteen years as a teacher with the Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB). As a coach at Essex District High School, his teams have won ten WECSSAA Team Titles, three SWOSSAA titles and one OFSAA title along with fifteen OFSAA individual medals.
Also well known for his athletic career at the University of Windsor, Andy competed for the Lancer track and cross country teams from 1996-2002. He was a four time CIS all-Canadian, five time OUA all-star and an NAIA All-American in track and field with the Lancers. As a four-time team captain, he helped the Lancers capture five OUA track & field championships, two OUA cross country championships, and a CIS cross country national championship. Hahn was also a two-time Canadian national team member in cross country and road racing.
Andy is a NCCP Level Three certified coach and has also previously served in the community as a board member and coach with the Windsor Legion track and field club.
