Frontenacs Edge Spitfires
Jason Robertson scored the overtime winner as the Kingston Frontenacs defeated the Windsor Spitfires 3-2 at the Rogers K-Rock Centre in Kingston Sunday afternoon.
Despite the loss, the Spitfires (16-4-4-0) extended their streak to 12-consecutive games in which they earned at least one point.
They did, however, squander multiple opportunities to win their third-straight game on the weekend when they failed to protect a one-goal lead heading into the third period and could not cash in on powerplay opportunities both with regulation time running out and again in overtime.
Fatigue also appeared to play a factor for the Spitfires who once again iced just 18 skaters, including 10 forwards that included a line of three defencemen being used up front with forwards Logan Brown and Jeremiah Addison out with injuries. Gabriel Vilardi (appendectomy) and Cristiano DiGiacinto (suspension) were also out of the visitors’ lineup.
Rookie Connor Corcoran and Hayden McCool scored 40 seconds apart in the second period to give the Spitfires a 2-1 lead that they could not protect the rest of the game.
Justin Pringle and Linus Nyman had the other goals for the Frontenacs (10-12-1-1-1) while Jeremy Helvig made 24 saves to pick up the win in goal. Michael DiPietro also made 24 stops for the Spitfires.
The Spitfires schedule has them return to action Wednesday night for a game on the road against the Greyhounds at the Essar Centre in Sault Ste. Marie.
