Thanks to the hardworking men and women building Little Caesars Arena, the project is moving forward at lightning speed and on track for a September 2017 opening. More than 750 crew members are on site daily working on what is sure to be one of the coolest new arenas in the country and one of the largest and most exciting construction projects underway in Detroit.
As Red Wings fans approach a year away from opening, now is a great time to take a look at progress on some of the coolest elements of Little Caesars Arena and the impressive buildings around it in the Woodward Square neighborhood of The District Detroit.
A World-class Arena and So Much More
As a centerpiece of The District Detroit, a 50-block, world-class sports and entertainment district, Little Caesars Arena was designed to integrate into the neighborhood and be open, accessible and vibrant on game days and every day. Much of this design is now coming to life with steel and concrete rising every day for new mixed-use office, retail and residential buildings adjacent to the arena on Woodward Avenue and Henry Street—setting the stage for an incredible new community-focused sports and entertainment destination that puts fans and neighbors at the center of the action.
The Red Wings organization is building a unique destination to live, work and play where those seeking to attend sports and entertainment events are immersed in an urban atmosphere with new mixed-used and residential developments throughout five distinct neighborhoods surrounding Little Caesars Arena.
Progress on Future Fan Favorites Fans have much to look forward to when it comes to experiencing games and entertainment in Little Caesars Arena. The crew has made incredible progress on some of the innovative design elements which are sure to become fan favorites. Things such as the outdoor piazza where fans can watch the action happening inside on a massive video wall—a unique urban plaza that will be regularly programmed with music and entertainment. Nearly all of the concrete for this community space has been poured and will be a giant welcome for fans in 2017.
There has been major progress on the Via concourse, an indoor street-style shopping and dining experience like no other which surrounds the arena bowl and will be open to the community on game day and every day.
The framework for the jewel skin that wraps around the Via has begun to be installed nearest the Via and is highly visible between the east-side of the arena and the buildings east of the arena’s Via. Steel and concrete for the restaurants, shops and office spaces which line the Via are also now highly visible from Woodward Avenue.
Gondola seating (feature photo) on the east and west sides of the arena bowl have been hung and work progresses as concrete floors are poured ahead of seats and high-end amenities. These premium seats, sponsored by Michigan First Credit Union, will be ideal for adventurous fans who want a bird’s eye view of the action.
The arena’s suites will take center stage as midpoints in the arena, providing an intimate experience for suite-goers. The precast for the suites is completely installed and progress continues at a rapid pace.
