LOCAL CYCLIST RIDES 24hrs. FOR ALZHEIMER’S

For several years now, Don Martel, Windsor resident and professional photographer, has made fundraising for those suffering with dementia his personal mission by cycling across Canada.

In 2015, Don cycled East to West across Canada and then in 2018, he cycled North to South. His life changing adventures have raised over $20,000.00 for Alzheimer’s disease. Don’s journey and desire to raise funds for the Alzheimer Society of Windsor & Essex County is not over! Don had been contemplating cycling around the world, however, that is currently out of the question. Around the clock, is possible.

On Wednesday, May 20, 2020 Don will cycle sunset to sunset on his well-travelled bike, Miracle. Together they will navigate the light and darkness of a complete day. He will begin his journey age 61 at the big Canadian flag at the base of Ouellette Avenue. Don will cycle for 24 hours non-stop through our county and finish age 62; so that funds can help the Alzheimer Society navigate these new times in world history.

Long before “social distancing” was a part of our daily vocabulary, those facing dementia knew exactly what it meant. So many people living with dementia have felt isolated from friends, families and communities. The Alzheimer Society of Windsor & Essex County has been a lifeline for people living with dementia to get support, connect and learn – something that is vital in their quest to live the best life possible.

Today, the need for dementia support is greater than ever before. The demand for our support services is at an all-time high and we anticipate the demand will only increase at faster rates.

“On Don’s birthday, we hope to raise funds to support our new, innovative virtual services, created to reach our clients during the Covid-19 pandemic, while developing new, safe program guides to help those living with dementia get through this new normal. If you can, we need your support to help make sure we can continue to be there for our caregivers and clients in a safe way, now and in the future,” says Peggy Winch, Manager of Fund Development and Community Engagement.

Don’s trip begins at sunset 8:30pm, Wednesday, May 20, 2020 and will continue to sunset, 8:30pm,Thursday, May 21, 2020 at Dieppe Gardens (Under the Great Canadian Flag).

Please support Don’s 24hr Ride for Alzheimer’s and show that you are also committed to support those living with dementia and the development of local programs and services. Donations can be made online
