Meet The 2023 Heisman Trophy Finalists: Three Quarterbacks Lead The Charge

The 2023 Heisman Trophy finalists have been announced for the most prestigious honor in college football. And once again it will be largely a quarterback-centric event. The finalists for this highly sought-after award include three quarterbacks and a wide receiver, all of whom have distinguished themselves on the field.

The Heisman Trophy is an annual award given to the most outstanding college football player in the United States. The recipient of this award is a player who exemplifies exceptional talent, tenacity, and a tireless work ethic. The winner will be unveiled on Saturday during a live broadcast from Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City, starting at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.

This year’s finalists for the Heisman Trophy include Jayden Daniels (LSU), Marvin Harrison Jr. (Ohio State), Bo Nix (Oregon), and Michael Penix, Jr. (Washington). A closer look at these exceptional athletes reveals their unique journey to the finals.

Jayden Daniels, LSU

Jayden Daniels, a senior quarterback from LSU, has been a standout player in the current season. Originally from San Bernardino, California, Daniels transferred from Arizona State and has quickly become a force to be reckoned with.

Daniels made history as the first player in FBS to throw over 350 yards and rush for more than 200 yards in a single game. With an impressive quarterback rating and leading the nation in yards per passing attempt, Daniels is on track to become LSU’s first Heisman winner since Joe Burrow in 2019.

Marvin Harrison Jr., Ohio State

Following in the footsteps of his father, Pro Football Hall of Famer Marvin Harrison, Marvin Harrison Jr. has made a name for himself as a wide receiver at Ohio State. Harrison Jr. led the Big Ten in receiving yards, yards per reception, and touchdown catches.

With 67 receptions, 1,211 yards, and 15 total touchdowns, Harrison Jr. is a serious contender for the Heisman Trophy. If successful, he would become Ohio State’s first Heisman winner since Troy Smith in 2006.

Bo Nix, Oregon

Bo Nix, a senior quarterback from Oregon, has had a stellar season. Hailing from Pinson, Alabama, Nix transferred from Auburn and has since led the nation in completions, completion percentage, and tied for the lead in touchdown passes.

Nix’s performance in the last five games has been particularly commendable, throwing 19 touchdowns with only two interceptions, and leading Oregon to the Pac-12 title game. If Nix wins the trophy, he will be Oregon’s first Heisman winner since Marcus Mariota in 2014.

Michael Penix Jr., Washington

The final Heisman finalist, Michael Penix Jr., is a senior quarterback from Washington. Penix Jr. transferred from Indiana in 2022 and has been instrumental in leading the Huskies to an undefeated regular season.

Penix, Jr. led the nation in passing yards and passing yards per game, throwing 33 touchdowns. If Penix Jr. were to win the Heisman, he would be the first player from Washington to do so.
