Memorial Cup Game 2, Erie Otters Defeat Seattle Thunderbirds
Troy Timpano made 18 saves as the Erie Otters defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-2 in game two of two of the 2017 MasterCard Memorial Cup at the WFCU Centre in Windsor Saturday afternoon.
Alex DeBrincat, Jordan Sambrook, Dylan Strome and Christian Girhiny all scored for the Ontario Hockey League champion Otters (1-0) who never trailed in the game.
Strome’s goal just 96 seconds into the third period gave the Otters their third lead of the game and it turned out to the the game-winning marker. Girhiny, who did not score during the OHL playoffs, rounded out the scoring in the game by scoring into an empty net.
Scott Eansor and Austin Strand replied for the Western Hockey League champion Thunderbirds (0-1), who defeated the Regina Pats, the number one ranked team in the Canadian Hockey League, to advance to the tourney in Windsor. Rookie Carl Stankowski was steady if not spectacular for the Thunderbirds and his play kept his team within striking distance of the Otters all afternoon.
The 2017 MasterCard Memorial Cup continues Sunday night when the Thunderbirds take on the host Windsor Spitfires (1-0).
