The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) Ooks (Edmonton, AB) opened the CCAA National Women’s Basketball Championship with a lopsided 74-36 victory over Vancouver Island University (Nanaimo, BC) in Windsor Thursday afternoon.

After scoring the game’s first 11 points the Ooks finished the opening quarter up 14-5 and increased their lead to 26-7 in the early stages of the second quarter.  VIU put together a 9-point run to close the half but still trailed 26-14 at the break.

NAIT was relentless into the third quarter and entering the fourth quarter led VIU 43-20 allowing the reserves a chance to shine.  NAIT’s Malesha Petterson (Nassau, Bahamas) scored 11 of her game high 17 points in the final frame on her way to earning Player of the Game Honours.

11 players for NAIT reached the score sheet and outrebounded VIU 51-24.  Jamie McFarlane (Prince George, BC) filled the stat line recording 9 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals for the Player of the Game Award from VIU.
