NHL NEWS FEBRUARY 21 – LAINE, JETS FACE MATTHEWS, MAPLE LEAFS FOR SECOND TIME
The top two picks from the 2016 NHL Draft go head-to-head for the second and final time this season when Patrik Laine (28-24—52) and the Jets visit Auston Matthews (28-21—49) and the Maple Leafs. Winnipeg rallied from a 4-0 deficit led by Laine’s first career hat trick to defeat Toronto in their first meeting this season and own an 8-0-1 record in their last nine games against the Maple Leafs dating to March 13, 2013 (TOR: 1-5-3). Laine sits one goal shy of tying the Jets/Thrashers record for most in a season by a rookie (Ilya Kovalchuk: 29 in 2001-02), while Matthews needs six to match the Maple Leafs single-season benchmark (Wendel Clark: 34 in 1985-86).
