NHL NEWS JAN 27 – 100 GREATEST NHL PLAYERS TO OPEN ALL-STAR WEEKEND

As part of the League’s year-long centennial festivities, the National Hockey League will celebrate the 100 Greatest NHL Players with THE NHL100 presented by GEICO, a star-studded primetime television special hosted by actor Jon Hamm and featuring special appearances by John Legend, Robin Thicke and John Ondrasik of Five for Fighting. The gathering of hockey legends will be broadcast live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles tonight at 9:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN, Sportsnet and TVAS.

THE NHL100 presented by GEICO will showcase the entire collection of the 100 Greatest NHL Players, with 67 members (who played predominantly from 1967-present) being unveiled at the event. These players will join the 33 legends (who played primarily from 1917-1966) who were announced at the 2017 Scotiabank NHL Centennial Classic on Jan. 1.

NHL NEWS AND MUSINGS

  • Five different skaters scored as the Western Conference-leading Wild (32-11-5, 69 points) improved to 4-1-0 in their last five contests. Mikael Granlund (1-1—2) extended his career-high point streak to nine games (2-9—11)
  • Philadelphia earned their third consecutive win and snapped Toronto’s franchise-record road point streak at 11 games (9-0-2)
  • The Jets scored three times in the final 4:03 of regulation to improve to 4-0-0 in their five-game season series vs. CHI
  • Kings goaltender Peter Budaj (22 saves) registered his fifth shutout of the season to extend his career high
  • Calgary surrendered a 2-0 lead in the third period, but Johnny Gaudreau (1-1—2) scored with 30.2 seconds left in overtime as the Flames snapped a four-game slide (0-4-0)
  • Mike Smith (19 saves) registered his first shutout of the season to backstop the Coyotes to their third consecutive win
  • The Edmonton-San Jose contest marked Doug Wilson’s 1,000th career game as general manager of the Sharks
  • Bruins forward Brad Marchand was fined $10,000 for a dangerous trip against Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall
  • Executive producer of The Ellen DeGeneres ShowAndy Lassner received hockey lessons from members of the Kings as part of the segment “Average Andy”.
