NHL news November 5, 2022 – RANTANEN, LAINE SHINE AND BRING HOME COUNTRY TO ITS FEET

In front of a sellout crowd of 12,882 at Nokia Arena, Tampere, Finland native Patrik Laine (1-1—2) helped the Blue Jackets erase a 3-0 deficit, but Nousiainen, Finland native Mikko Rantanen (3-1—4) completed a hat trick in the third period to propel the Avalanche to a 6-3 victory in the first of two contests in Finland for the 2022 NHL Global Series.

  • Rantanen became the third player to score a hat trick in a regular-season game contested outside North America, joining his Finnish counterpart Laine (3-0—3 on Nov. 1, 2018 in Global Series) and Theo Fleury (3-2—5 on Oct. 10, 1998 in Game ONe Japan ‘98).
  • Friday, which featured the most combined goals by both teams in a regular-season game outside North America, was just the third overseas contest to feature a player from both teams score in the same game in their home country.
  • While Laine netted his fifth career goal in his home country (3 GP), Rantanen became the sixth Finnish-born player to score an NHL regular-season goal in a game contested in Finland. Besides Laine and Rantanen, Jussi Jokinen (Oct. 7, 2010, Premiere Series w/ CAR), Tuomo Ruutu (Oct. 8, 2010, Premiere Series w/ CAR), Ville Koistinen (Oct. 2, 2009, Premiere Series w/ FLA) and Ville Leino (Oct. 7, 2011, Premiere Series w/ BUF) have done so.

QUICK HITS OF MORE NOTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS FROM GLOBAL SERIES

Multiple players climbed up different NHL lists for games contested outside of North America and will have one final opportunity to make moves when the Avalanche and Blue Jackets meet for the second and final instalment of the 2022 NHL Global Series in Tampere, Finland on Saturday.

  • Patrik Laine improved his totals in games contested outside of North America to 5-1—6 (3 GP), which trails Dustin Byfuglien (2-5—7 in 4 GP) and Patrick Kane (3-4—7 in 3 GP) for the most among all players. Laine already led all skaters in goals in those contests entering Friday.
  • Nathan MacKinnon (0-4—4) also established an NHL-mark for the most assists in a regular-season game contested outside North America, besting Byfuglien (0-3—3 on Nov. 1, 2018; Global Series w/ WPG) and Blake Wheeler (0-3—3 on Nov. 1, 2018; Global Series w/ WPG).
  • Mikko Rantanen (3-1—4) and MacKinnon became the second and third players to record four-plus points in a regular-season game contested outside of North America, joining Theo Fleury who tallied 3-2—5 on Oct. 10, 1998 in Tokyo, Japan (Game ONe Japan ’98).
  • Erik Johnson recorded his fifth assist in games contested outside North America (5 GP), tying Byfuglien (5) and Wheeler (5) for the most in the process.

AHO HELPS HURRICANES TO FOURTH STRAIGHT COMEBACK WIN

After trailing 1-0 and 2-1, Sebastian Aho (3-1—4) scored his fifth career hat trick to help Carolina defeat Buffalo and earn its fourth consecutive comeback victory. It marked the fourth time in Hurricanes/Whalers history that the club has posted four or more consecutive comeback wins (also 5 GP from Oct. 24 – Nov. 3, 2005; 5 GP from Jan. 31 – Feb. 11, 1996 & 4 GP from Jan. 8-14, 2017).

  • Aho recorded the seventh four-point outing of his career, tying Kevin Dineen for the fourth most in Hurricanes/Whalers history. The only players with more are Ron Francis (30), Eric Staal (12) and Blaine Stoughton (10).

GIROUX SET TO FACE FORMER TEAM ON 14-GAME SATURDAY

Claude Giroux will face off against his former team for the first time when the Senators welcome the Flyers to Canadian Tire Centre. Giroux played exactly 1,000 games with Philadelphia over the course of 15 seasons and captained the club for 10 of those campaigns. He sits second on the Flyers’ all-time list in assists (609), points (900) and games played (1,000).

McDAVID, KARLSSON EYE RARE COMPANY IN SWIFT STARTS TO 2022-23

Oilers captain Connor McDavid (12-12—24 in 11 GP) and Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson (10-8—18 in 13 GP) have found their names on the score sheet quite frequently to start the 2022-23 campaign, with both entering Saturday with the opportunity to join rare company if they do so once again.

  • After being held without a point in consecutive games from Oct. 22-24, McDavid has notched 7-7—14 in five contests since – a streak that also includes four consecutive multi-point outings. Should the Oilers captain collect a point in his 499th career contest, he would join teammate Leon Draisaitl (12 GP in 2021-22) and Eric Staal (12 GP in 2005-06 w/ CAR) as just the third active player to reach the 25-point mark in a campaign in 12 games or fewer.
  • Karlsson (10-8—18 in 13 GP) enters Saturday as the scoring leader among defensemen and has goals in each of his past four games. Should he find the back of the net when the Sharks visit the Ducks, he can join Rasmus Dahlin (5 GP from Oct. 13-22, 2022) as the second blueliner this season to record a five-game goal streak. Only three campaigns in NHL history have featured multiple blueliners record a run of at least that length: 1983-84 (Mike O’Connell: 7 GP, Ray Bourque: 6 GP & Doug Wilson: 5 GP), 1977-78 (Barry Beck: 6 GP & Tom Edur: 5 GP) and 1920-21 (Harry Mummery: 6 GP & Harry Cameron: 5 GP).
