MAPLE LEAFS OUST CANADIENS IN SCOTIA NORTH DIVISION SHOWDOWN
After Montreal’s Josh Anderson opened the scoring for the Canadiens 1:16 into the contest, Jake Muzzin (0-3—3) factored on three of four Maple Leafs goals to help Toronto win 4-2 in a showdown between the top two teams in the Scotia North Division.
Toronto joined Boston in extending the League’s longest active point streak to nine games (both 8-0-1). After the Maple Leafs strung together a 10-game run in 2019-20 (9-0-1), they have now posted a point streak of nine-plus contests in consecutive seasons for the fourth time in franchise history and first since 1992-93 (10 GP) – 1993-94 (10 GP, 11 GP).

Tonight’s empty net goal is Hyman’s 13th career empty net goal, making him the all-time franchise leader in the category. Hyman has five points (3-3-6) over his last five games played. Tonight’s game is his second multi-point performance of 2020-21. He has a goal and two assists in two games against Montreal this season. In 15 career games against the Canadiens, Hyman has recorded 13 points (5-8-13), his most against any opponent.
- Jake Muzzin registered the primary assist on Dermott’s second period goal and later added the secondary assist on Holl’s third period goal before picking up the secondary assist on Hyman’s third period goal. His three assists tie his career-high for assists in a game (Previous: Dec. 11, 2014 Los Angeles at Ottawa) and his career-high for points in a game (3 – 9x). Muzzin has six assists over his last five games played. Tonight’s game is his second multi-assist and multi-point game of the season. He has registered six points (1-5-6) in seven games on the road this season. He has 13 points (4-9-13) in 18 career games against Montreal.
- John Tavares had the secondary assist before recording the primary assist on Mikheyev’s third period goal. Tavares has five points (1-4-5) over his last five games. He has seven points (1-6-7) in seven games played on the road in 2020-21. In 37 career games against Montreal, he has recorded 35 points (15 goals, 20 assists).
- Alex Kerfoot recorded the primary assist on Mikheyev’s third period goal. Kerfoot has points (1-1-2) in two consecutive games. He has six points (2-4-6) in nine career games against the Canadiens. He has three points (1-2-3) in seven games on the road this season.
- Auston Matthews registered the primary assist on Hyman’s third period goal. Matthews has points (9-2-11) in eight consecutive games. He has eight points (5-3-8) in seven games played on the road in 2020-21.
- Frederik Andersen stopped 33 shots to earn his ninth win of the season.
Wednesday marked just the third time in the last 50 years in which the NHL’s schedule showcased just Original Six clubs (min. 2 GP). The others: Feb. 5, 2020 (TOR at NYR; BOS at CHI) and Oct. 3, 1991 (NYR at BOS; TOR at MTL; DET at CHI).
MARCHAND SCORES OT WINNER AS BRUINS EARN RARE FRANCHISE FEAT
Charlie McAvoy assisted on Brad Marchand’s overtime winner as the Bruins extended their point streak to nine games (8-0-1) and collected their fourth consecutive comeback win.
Boston trailed 1-0 in the first period and has recorded four straight comeback wins, all of which coming on the road, for the first time in franchise history. Only one team in NHL history has posted a longer such run: Hartford (5 GP from Jan. 31 – Feb. 11, 1996).
Marchand, who extended the League’s longest active point streaks to nine games dating to Jan. 21 (7-6—13 in 9 GP), scored his 16th career regular-season overtime goal and moved into a tie for fifth on the NHL’s all-time list.
McAvoy collected his 10th helper of the season to also extend his assist/point streak to eight games (1-10—11 in 8 GP). Only one Bruins defenseman in the last 35 years has posted a run of at least that length: Ray Bourque (6x; last: 8 GP in 1995-96).
INTRASTATE RIVALS TO SQUARE OFF IN SUNRISE
The Lightning (9-1-1, 19 points) and Panthers (7-1-2, 16 points), who have the highest and second-highest points percentage in the Discover Central Division standings, respectively, are set to battle at BB&T Center (7 p.m. ET on SUN, FS-F). With each club owning just one regulation loss in 2020-21, Thursday marks the fifth time that the clubs will meet as the top two teams in their division (also Feb. 14, 2004, March 6, 2004, Jan. 23, 2016 and March 26, 2016).
Tampa Bay owns the highest goal differential in the NHL this season (+22), with Steven Stamkos (7-7—14 in 11 GP) accounting for seven of the team’s 42 goals and Andrei Vasilevskiy owning a 1.80 goals-against average through 10 appearances.
Florida is led in scoring by franchise stalwarts Jonathan Huberdeau (4-10—14 in 10 GP) and Aleksander Barkov (4-7—11 in 10 GP) as well as offseason addition Patric Hornqvist (6-4—10 in 10 GP). It marks the fourth season in which three or more Panthers players averaged at least one point per game through the team’s first 10, following 1995-96, 1999-00 and 2017-18.
LAMORIELLO CLOSES IN ON 1,300TH WIN; HEXTALL AIMS FOR FIRST WITH PENGUINS
Lou Lamoriello can earn his 1,300th career regular-season win as an NHL general manager when the Islanders host the Penguins at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum (7 p.m. on ESPN+, ATTSN-PT, MSG+, SNP, SN360). He would become the third in League history to reach the milestone, joining David Poile (1,420) and Glen Sather (1,319).
Thursday is set to mark Pittsburgh’s first game since naming Ron Hextall general manager and Brian Burke president of hockey operations. Hextall had a record of 165-128-58 (388 points) in 351 regular-season games at the helm with the Flyers for parts of five seasons from 2014-15 to 2018-19.
Flyers’ Game on February 14 is Postponed
The National Hockey League announced that with three Philadelphia Flyers Players currently in the NHL’s COVID Protocols, the Club’s game against the New York Rangers on Feb. 14 has been postponed. It is expected that the Flyers will be able to re-open their facilities for practice on Monday, Feb. 15. These decisions were made by the League’s, NHLPA’s and Club’s medical groups.
The Flyers’ organization has, and will continue to follow, all recommended guidelines aimed at protecting the health and safety of its Players, staff and community at large as set by the NHL, local, state and national agencies.
