GOLDEN KNIGHTS CELEBRATE NEVADA DAY WITH FIFTH STRAIGHT WIN
Seven different players found the back of the net as the Golden Knights (8-1-0, 16 points) celebrated Nevada Day – which commemorates Nevada’s admission to statehood on October 31, 1864 – with their fifth straight victory. The Golden Knights’ five-game win streak matches the longest win streak by any team at any point in its inaugural NHL season, joining the 1926-27 Rangers and 1979-80 Oilers.
The Golden Knights finished their first-ever homestand at T-Mobile Arena with a 6-1-0 record while outscoring their opponents by a 30-17 margin. Only two other teams in NHL history have won at least six of their first seven home games in their inaugural season (Toronto Arenas: 7-0-0 in 1917-18 and Montreal Canadiens: 6-1-0 in 1917-18).
STREAKING PLAYERS HIGHLIGHT SATURDAY’S SCHEDULE
Several skaters in action on Saturday’s 12-game schedule look to extend point streaks:
Lightning teammates Steven Stamkos (4-17—21) and Nikita Kucherov (12-7—19) look to extend their season-opening point streaks to 12 games, which would set a new franchise record for longest point streak to begin a season (currently tied with Martin St. Louis: 3-12—15 in 11 GP in 2009-10).
Only three sets of teammates in NHL history have had simultaneous season-opening point streaks of 12 or more games:
- Dimitri Kvartalnov (12-10—22 in 14 GP) and Joe Juneau (7-15—22 in 14 GP) w/ BOS in 1992-93
- Kevin Stevens (14-19—33 in 13 GP), Mario Lemieux (18-20—38 in 12 GP) and Ron Francis (2-16—18 in 12 GP) w/ PIT in 1992-93
- Phil Esposito (19-15—34 in 15 GP) and Bobby Orr (8-16—24 in 15 GP) w/ BOS in 1973-74
TEAMS SURVIVE TIGHT CONTESTS TO CONTINUE SOLID STARTS
The Blues, Devils and Blue Jackets all secured one-goal victories to continue their strong starts to the 2017-18 season.
The Blues – who have earned points in five consecutive games (4-0-1) – improved to 8-2-1, trailing only the 2002-03 (9-1-1), 2013-14 (8-1-2) and 2010-11 (8-1-2) teams for the best season-opening start to a campaign in franchise history. Jaden Schwartz – who ranks third in the NHL with 7-8—15 (11 GP) – collected an assist on Brayden Schenn’s game-winning goal to extend his point streak to six games (5-3—8).
After surrendering two goals to the Senators in the final 1:15 of regulation, Jesper Bratt notched a highlight-reel goal in the shootout to lift the Devils to a 7-2-0 record – the second-best nine-game start in franchise history (8-1-0 in 1993-94).
Josh Anderson scored the game-winning goal in overtime and Sergei Bobrovsky (6-2-0, 1.86 GAA, .938 SV%, 1 SO) made 29 saves to lead the Blue Jackets to a 7-3-0 record, establishing a new benchmark for the best 10-game start to a season in franchise history.
