BRUINS RALLY FOR WIN, MATCH LONGEST POINT STREAK IN 35 YEARS
Boston fell behind twice during a five-goal second period, but Brad Marchand scored the go-ahead marker with 32.9 seconds left in the frame to help the Bruins (28-10-8, 64 points) extend their point streak to 17 contests (13-0-4).
The Bruins, who have the fewest regulation losses in the NHL, became the seventh club in the past 20 seasons to register a point streak of 17+ games, joining the Lightning (14-0-4 in 2003-04; 18 GP), Red Wings (17-0-3 in 2005-06; 20 GP), Sharks (18-0-2 in 2007-08; 20 GP), Canucks (14-0-3 in 2010-11; 17 GP),Blackhawks (21-0-3 in 2012-13; 24 GP) and Blue Jackets (17-0-1 in 2016-17; 18 GP).
This marks the sixth time in franchise history that the Bruins have recorded one or more points in at least 17 consecutive games – and first instance in 35 years.
Tuukka Rask, who matched a season-high with 37 saves, became the seventh goaltender in Bruins history to record at least one point in 17 consecutive decisions.
Patrice Bergeron tied the game in the second period to reach the 20-goal mark for the fifth straight year and ninth time in 14 NHL seasons (all w/ BOS). He joined Johnny Bucyk (16), Rick Middleton (10) and Ray Bourque (9) as the only Bruins to record at least nine 20-goal campaigns.
Boston’s Brad Marchand will have a hearing today for elbowing New Jersey’s Marcus Johansson.
GOLDEN KNIGHTS MOVE WITHIN ONE WIN OF TYING ANOTHER NHL RECORD
William Karlsson (2-0—2) recorded his fifth multi-goal game of the season to help the Western Conference-leading Golden Knights improve to 32-11-4 (68 points) and stay within one point of the League-leading Lightning (33-12-3, 69 points). Vegas sits one victory shy of tying the NHL record for most wins by a team in its inaugural season.
The Golden Knights improved to 10-0-2 in their past 12 games at T-Mobile Arena – the longest home point streak in the NHL this season – and earned their League-leading 19th home win (19-2-2, 40 points). Only three teams in NHL history have recorded as many home wins in their inaugural season. Last season, the Capitals paced all teams with 32 home wins.
Karlsson boosted his 2017-18 totals to 27-15—42 (47 GP), extending his single-season career highs for goals and points. Only three players in the past 37 years have scored more than 27 goals while playing for a team in its inaugural season: Brian Bradley in 1992-93 (42 w/ TBL), Scott Mellanby in 1993-94 (30 w/ FLA) and Geoff Sanderson in 2000-01 (30 w/ CBJ).
CROSBY TIES JAGR ON PENGUINS ALL-TIME POINTS LIST
Penguins captain Sidney Crosby collected an assist to extend his assist/point streak to eight games (3-13—16). Crosby matched the longest assist streak in the NHL this season and sits just one game shy of equaling the longest such run of his career (3-13—16 in 9 GP from Dec. 20 – Jan. 8, 2008).
Crosby, who sits one goal shy of 400 for his career (399-680—1,079 in 832 GP), moved into a tie with Jaromir Jagr (439-640—1,079 in 806 GP) for second place on the franchise’s all-time points list.
