St. Clair College women’s varsity wrapped up their OCAA regular soccer season schedule Tuesday evening playing the top ranked Fanshawe Falcons to a 1-1 draw at the Libro Centre in Amherstburg
In an evenly played first half, the Saints came out on top on a nice goal by Kaitlyn Austin in the 27th minute on a nice ball forward by Nina Civitarese. It was Austin’s 14th goal in 9 games played. The shots on goal for the first half were in favour of St. Clair 4-3 but the Falcons held an 11-8 edge in shot attempts.
Fanshawe came out hard in the second half and got the equalizer in the 58th minute on a great ball from long distance the hit the bottom of the cross bar and went in. Alexandria Samping was solid in goal making a couple of key saves late in the game. St. Clair put the pressure on very late though and had a couple of glorious chances to win the game in the last 5 minutes but couldn’t find the back of the net. Fanshawe had 7 shots on goal in the second half while the Saints had 4. The Falcons also held the edge in shot attempts 16-11.
With the draw, the Saints record on the season ends up at 7 wins 1 loss and 2 ties and in second place in the OCAA West Division. Fanshawe finished in first place with a record of 9 wins and a tie. Fanshawe is ranked 2nd in Ontario and 4th in Canada. St. Clair scored 36 goals and allowed 12 in 10 matches while Fanshawe scored 42 and allowed 6.
The Saints are next in action on Thursday, October 27 at 6 pm at the Libro Centre in Amherstburg in OCAA Quarterfinal action. St. Clair is the host college for the 2016 OCAA Belairdirect Women’s Soccer Championship.
