Spits Boss gets nod for OHL Coach of the Year

Head Coach Rocky Thompson nominated for OHL Coach of the Year.

Thompson helped the Spitfires to a 35-point turnaround, recording 40 wins in his first season behind the bench helping him get the nod for OHL Coach of the Year.

Three Spitfire players and the club’s head coach have been nominated for Ontario Hockey League awards, the league announced earlier today.

Christian Fischer is the club’s nominee for the Red Tilson Award, given to the league’s most valuable player. Fischer, 19, topped the club in scoring with 40 goals and 50 assists in his first OHL season.

Michael DiPietro is up for Rookie of the Year honours. The 16-year-old, Amherstburg native posted 16 wins, a .912 save percentage and a 2.45 goals against average in 29 games played.

Finally, Mikhail Sergachev is nominated as the league’s top defenceman. The 17-year-old, projected Top-10 pick in this summer’s NHL Draft in Buffalo had 57 points in 67 games. His 17 goals was tops among all OHL blueliners.

This year’s OHL hardware will be handed out in a ceremony June 7th in Toronto.
