Detroit Red Wings vs. Toronto Maple Leafs: Game Review December 28, 2025
The Detroit Red Wings continued their dominance over the Toronto Maple Leafs this season with a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory on Sunday night at Little Caesars Arena. Defenseman Simon Edvinsson played hero, scoring the game-winner just 1:46 into the extra period to give Detroit its fourth win in their last five games.
Game Summary
In front of a packed house of 19,515 fans, both teams delivered an entertaining, back-and-forth contest that remained scoreless through the first period despite several quality chances at both ends.
Toronto broke the deadlock 4:25 into the second period when Matthew Knies converted on the power play. The sequence featured some brilliant passing as John Tavares found Auston Matthews, who quickly fed Knies in front of the net. The young forward managed to score while being knocked to the ice – just Toronto’s fifth road power-play goal this season.
Detroit evened the score with just 59 seconds remaining in the second period. Defenseman Moritz Seider fired a shot from near the blue line that found its way through traffic and past a screened Dennis Hildeby. Lucas Raymond earned an assist on the play after his initial shot hit the post.
The Maple Leafs reclaimed the lead 4:53 into the third period when Nicholas Robertson unleashed a powerful slap shot from the top of the face-off circle after Tavares forced a turnover along the boards. But Detroit responded almost immediately, with Mason Appleton tying the game just 23 seconds later. Appleton got a step on Toronto defenseman Troy Stecher and beat Hildeby over his glove, with Michael Rasmussen and Albert Johansson assisting on the play.
Overtime Heroics
The overtime winner came from an unlikely sequence. Toronto goalie Dennis Hildeby attempted to start a breakout by pushing a loose puck toward Auston Matthews, but the play backfired. Edvinsson intercepted the puck at the blue line, skated in alone, and slid a backhand shot inside the right post for the game-winner.
“I saw an opportunity with the goalie out,” Edvinsson explained after the game. “I saw an opportunity and I took it, I put the puck in the net for once.”
Standout Performances
Simon Edvinsson wasn’t just the overtime hero – he showed remarkable toughness throughout the game. He had to be helped off the ice after blocking a Tavares shot with his ankle in the second period but returned to lead all players with 25:57 of ice time.
“He’s one of our best shot blockers, and even after he went down, he still got his stick on the next one,” Red Wings coach Todd McLellan praised. “His leg went numb, so he needed a little time to get the feeling back, but he still played half the game.”
John Tavares continued his career-long success against Detroit, recording two assists to bring his career totals against the Red Wings to 56 points (20 goals, 36 assists) in 43 games.
Dennis Hildeby made 33 saves for Toronto in a strong performance that kept the Maple Leafs competitive throughout. His sprawling pad save on Andrew Copp in the final 90 seconds of regulation preserved the tie and forced overtime.
Cam Talbot stopped 25 shots for Detroit, earning his 23rd win of the season.
Key Moments
A significant pre-game development was the return of Patrick Kane to Detroit’s lineup after missing six games with an upper-body injury. The future Hall-of-Famer played 17:51 and registered four shots on goal as he continues his pursuit of 500 career goals, needing just two more to reach the milestone.
The Maple Leafs were without star forward William Nylander, who sat out due to a lower-body injury.
Edvinsson’s shot-blocking sequence in the second period proved to be a momentum-shifting moment. Despite being injured on the play, his defensive commitment exemplified Detroit’s team-first approach.
In the game’s final minutes, Hildeby’s spectacular save on Copp’s attempt, followed by Copp’s rebound hitting the post, provided a dramatic finish to regulation time.
Playoff Implications
The victory helped Detroit maintain their two-point lead over Tampa Bay atop the Atlantic Division. It also improved their impressive record to 5-1 in overtime and 13-2-3 in one-goal games this season.
“You have to win your season series, especially against teams in your division,” McLellan noted. “We’re guaranteed to win this one, and we want to win more points.”
With this victory, Detroit improved to 3-0-0 against Toronto this season, having previously recorded back-to-back wins over the Maple Leafs in October.
The loss dropped Toronto to 17-15-6 on the season and 4-6 in overtime games.
Fan Atmosphere
The sellout crowd at Little Caesars Arena created an electric atmosphere throughout the night, particularly during Edvinsson’s overtime celebration. The Swedish defenseman was mobbed by teammates near Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly after scoring the winner, sending Detroit fans home happy.
Both teams will now prepare for their next challenges – the Maple Leafs host New Jersey on Tuesday, while the Red Wings welcome Winnipeg on Wednesday.
