In a thrilling face-off between the San Jose Sharks and the Detroit Red Wings on December 7, 2023, the Sharks staged a dramatic comeback from a four-goal deficit, emerging victorious in overtime.
Mikael Granlund became the night’s hero, scoring a decisive goal in overtime, thus spoiling Patrick Kane’s debut for Detroit. This victory was a testament to the Sharks’ tenacity and resilience.
It was a night of unexpected twists and turns. The teams exchanged three-goal outbursts in just over three minutes, a feat that nearly broke an NHL record set in 1981.
NHL record for shortest span of six goals: 3 minutes (Washington and Quebec, 1981)
Despite the hype surrounding his debut, veteran Patrick Kane, who recently signed a one-year contract with Detroit, was unable to make a significant impact on the game.
The Red Wings initially appeared unbeatable, stacking up four goals in less than a minute. Michael Rasmussen contributed two back-to-back goals while Klim Kostin, Lucas Raymond, and Dylan Larkin each added their names to the score sheet.
Refusing to be sidelined, the Sharks responded with three goals within two minutes, closing the gap on the Red Wings’ lead. Nico Sturm and Tomas Hertl each netted twice for the Sharks, with Hertl’s second goal tying the game just as the Sharks’ goal was vacated for an additional player.
Interestingly, this game marked the Sharks’ first two short-handed goals of the season, courtesy of Hertl and Zetterlund.
Detroit regained the lead momentarily when Larkin scored with less than seven minutes remaining. However, the Sharks’ relentless pursuit paid off when Hertl managed to tie the game again, leading to the decisive overtime.
