The game kicked off with the Red Wings seizing the upper hand early on. A power-play opportunity presented itself when Minnesota’s defenseman, Alex Goligoski, was penalized for slashing just over three minutes into the game.

David Perron, the Red Wings’ forward, didn’t let the opportunity slide. With assists from Lucas Raymond and Shayne Gostisbehere, he scored the first goal for the Red Wings.

However, the Wild didn’t back down. With only a handful of seconds left in the first period, they evened the score. A penalty on Klim Kostin of the Red Wings for tripping Jonas Brodin gave the Wild a power-play opportunity. Joel Eriksson Ek, with a deflection from Kirill Kaprizov and an assist from Mats Zuccarello, tied the game at 1-1.

Eriksson Ek has been a standout player for the Wild this season, leading the team in scoring with 10 goals. His power-play goal in this game marked his sixth of the season, tying him for the third-most in the NHL. Zuccarello’s assist extended his active point streak to six games.

Despite this, the Red Wings led in shots on goal, with a count of 10-5.

The second period saw a scuffle in front of the Red Wings’ goal, resulting in coincidental unsportsmanlike conduct minors for Moritz Seider of the Red Wings and Marco Rossi of the Wild.

This led to a four-on-four situation, during which Dylan Larkin of the Red Wings broke the tie, giving his team a 2-1 lead. The Wild, however, ended the period leading in shots on goal, with a two-period total of 20-16.

The final period began with Patrick Maroon of the Wild tripping Lucas Raymond of the Red Wings, leading to another power-play opportunity for Detroit. David Perron capitalized on this, scoring his second power-play goal of the game, and extending the Red Wings’ lead to 3-1.

The Red Wings sealed their victory when Gostisbehere scored an empty-net goal with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game, bringing the final score to 4-1.

Despite the loss, the Wild led in shots on goal, with a total of 38 compared to the Red Wings’ 23.
