Min Woo Lee matched the course record with his 9-under 63, putting himself firmly in contention right from the start. Max Greyserman and Mark Hubbard also posted impressive 63s to tie for third place.
One of the most spectacular moments of the day came from Collin Morikawa, who nearly recorded an albatross (double eagle), coming just inches away from holing his approach shot on one of the par 5s.
Kevin Roy produced one of the day’s highlights with an eagle on the par-5 17th hole (577 yards), which helped cement his position atop the leaderboard.
Weather and Course Conditions
The weather for the opening round was generally favorable with temperatures around 79°F. There was some precipitation risk (51%) with light winds from the north at 4 mph and occasional gusts up to 7 mph. Despite the precipitation threat, the course remained in excellent condition, allowing for the record-breaking scores.
Rocket Classic Thursday Context
The Rocket Classic is being held at the historic Detroit Golf Club, a venue with a rich tradition dating back to 1899. The course was designed by legendary architect Donald Ross.
This year’s tournament carries additional significance as defending champion Cam Davis returns after his 2024 victory made him the first two-time winner of the Rocket Classic. Davis previously won in 2021 and made an incredible up-and-down from off the green on the final hole last year to finish at 18-under par.
The tournament continues through Sunday, June 29, with a purse of $9.6 million at stake. As day two unfolds, many eyes will be on the leaders to see if they can maintain their spectacular form from the opening round.
