St. Clair College Women’s Basketball 3-0 After Road Fanshawe Win Weekend Update November 5 2023
The St. Clair College Women’s Basketball team remain undefeated after an 86-69 win over Fanshawe College (London) at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre Friday night.
The teams traded punches in the early stages and Fanshawe was able to take a 6-point lead with a few minutes left in the first quarter. However, the Saints closed the first well to tie the game (15-15) headed to the second quarter. Both squads were loose offensively before halftime with St. Clair taking a modest 39-35 cushion by the intermission by clearing the glass well and making four triples in the frame. Stifling defense by the Saints in the third quarter limited Fanshawe to just five made field goals and the home team fell behind 60-46 headed to the fourth. St. Clair was able to grow their lead to as much as 21 points with just over four minutes to play and cruised down the stretch.
The Saints won the war on the glass (48-40) and had a decided advantage off the bench outscoring Fanshawe 29-8 thanks mostly to the efforts of Ania Buklarewicz (Mississauga, ON) who scored a game high 21 points in as many minutes of playing time which included five makes from the beyond the 3-point arc.
Kaitlyn Overeem (Brantford, ON) scored 20 points and flirted with a double-double after dishing out 9 assists for St. Clair and teammate Jordan Gutt (Haifa, Israel) scored 13 of her 16 points in the second half. Janae Smith (Warren, MI) had another nice all-around game scoring 11 points and added 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals.
The St. Clair Women stay on the road next week travelling to Sarnia on Saturday and face Lambton College who is also unbeaten at 4-0 in the West Division.
St. Clair College Men’s Basketball Rout Fanshawe in London
The St. Clair College Men’s Basketball team moved their record to 3-0 Friday night after routing Fanshawe College by a score of 96-49 at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre in London.
The game was tied 10-10 in the early stages when the Saints took on some early foul trouble allowing Fanshawe to capitalize and take a 6-point lead. St. Clair quickly answered closing the first quarter up 17-16 and carried that momentum into the second where they scored 29 points before the half while limiting the home team to just 8 points with some stifling defense. The Saints ran to the locker room up 46-24 after a buzzer beater from beyond half court by Andrew Loyuk (Windsor, ON/Kennedy). Fanshawe could not shrink the deficit in the third quarter and St. Clair held a 66-41 heading to the final frame. A lopsided fourth (30-8) allowed the Saints to spread around the playing time down the stretch.
St. Clair held Fanshawe to just 24% shooting from the floor and only 2 triples while making 13 of their own. The Saints forced 26 Fanshawe turnovers and scored 33 points off those changes in possession. St. Clair also had 36 points in the paint and 18 second chance tallies.
Chad Vincent-Simon (Scarborough, ON) scored a game high 21 points and added 7 rebounds for St. Clair. Darnelle Peddie (Pickering, ON) notched 16 points to go with 6 rebounds and 3 steals while former Falcon Hanani Ujullu (Kitchener, ON) nearly had a double-double for the Saints off the bench with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Loyuk finished with 12 points and 6 assists and St. Clair’s Jesiah Deerr (Whitby, ON) also reached double figures with 10 points narrowly missing a double-double after snaring 9 rebounds.
The St. Clair Men visit Lambton College (Sarnia) next Saturday in their next West Division matchup.
