Saints Soccer Update September 10 2023

Men’s Soccer Win Home Opener

The St. Clair College men’s soccer team started their OCAA regular season on Sunday afternoon with a solid 4-1 over the Sheridan Bruins (Oakville) at Acumen Stadium

The Saints had some great chances throughout the first half outshooting the Bruins 12-4 including a cross bar midway through the half. However it took until the 46th minute for St. Clair to break the ice on a nice goal by Riley Drkulec (Lakeshore; St. Anne’s) assisted by Michael Zivcic (Windsor, St. Joseph’s).

The Saints continued their good play in the second half with 13 shots on goal compared to 6 for Sheridan. However, the score remained 1-0 until the 74th minute when Moussa Nizam (Windsor; Kennedy) scored on a penalty kick after being taken down in the box. Nizam made it 3-0 in the 81st minute after a costly turnover by the Bruins in their own zone. Sheridan made it 3-1 on the 82nd minute with a goal off a free kick as St. Clair keeper Ned Malic (Windsor, Sandwich) was taken down on a collision in a battle for the ball. The Saints sealed the game in the 90th minute on a strike by Mateo Grahovac (Windsor; Riverside) assisted by Nizam.

Malic had a solid game in goal making a couple key saves when the Saints were up 1-0.

St. Clair is next in action on Saturday, September 16th when they travel to London to take on rival Fanshawe College at 2 pm.

St. Clair Women’s Soccer Win Home Opener

The St. Clair College women’s soccer team started their OCAA regular season on Sunday afternoon with a convincing 8-0 over the Sheridan Bruins (Oakville) at Acumen Stadium.

The Saints got off to a great starting scoring three quick goals in the first 11 minutes and never looked back from there.

Victoria Walsh (Georgetown; Christ the King) and Alexa Mognon (LaSalle; Assumption) led the way with 2 goals and an assist each. Leah Burrell (Windsor; Brennan) also had 2 goals with singles going to Abby Redmond (Tecumseh; L’Essor)and Brianna Kinsley-Clough (Georgetown; Christ the King). It was a solid all around defensive effort by the St. Clair women only allowing 3 shots on goal.

Keepers Scotlyn Fick (Belle River, Belle River)and Lilly Estephan (Windsor, Brennan) split time in the net to earn the clean sheet as the Saints outshoot the Bruins 25-4.

St. Clair is next in action on Saturday, September 16th when they travel to London to take on rival Fanshawe College at 12 pm.
