St. Clair Saints Women’s Volleyball Lose Playoff

The St. Clair College women’s varsity volleyball season came to a tough end at the Sportsplex on Thursday night.

The Saints hosted the Niagara Knights in a playoff match and lost a heartbreaker by a score of 3-2.

St. Clair got off to a great start winning the first set 25-18. The Knights came back with a big 25-23 set two win and followed it up with a 25-20 set three win to go up on the Saints 2-1.

Set four proved to be a thriller of a set with both teams trading the lead several times before St. Clair took the 26-28 win to force a fifth and deciding set. The Saints managed to stave off 2 match points in the set.

The Saints got off to a slow start in the fifth and deciding set but came back to make it 11-11. However, Niagara had a couple key blocks late to take the set and match 15-12.

Third year outside hitter Sarah Dobinson (Whitby; Donald A. Wilson) led the way for St. Clair with 20 kills, 1 stuff block and 8 digs. Rookie outside hitter Kiana Huggins (London; Saunders Secondary) had a big game as well with 12 kills, 2 service aces and 14 digs.

Heading into the match the Saints were in 4th place in the tough OCAA West Division with a record of 6-3 while the Knights were 5th with a record of 5-4. Last time these two teams met back on February 27th, it was St. Clair who had the upper hand with a 3-1 win.

With the win Niagara advances to play the Durham Lords in OCAA Quarterfinal play on Saturday afternoon.
